BACKGROUND: The introduction of immunoglobulin G (IgG) anti-D prophylaxis for Rhesus D (RhD)-negative women has substantially reduced the incidence of RhD alloimmunization and hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn in Europe by 85%, transforming fetal health outcomes. However, there is little evidence for the need of giving IgG anti-D prophylaxis to RhD-negative women in first-trimester abortions.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the international and national evidence-based guidelines on Rh testing and anti-D prophylaxis in first-trimester abortion, along with current literature both supporting an

BACKGROUND: Early promotion of sun-protective behavior may play a pivotal role in skin cancer prevention. School-based interventions have shown effectiveness in increasing sun-safety knowledge, yet few studies assess children's baseline perceptions before formal education.
OBJECTIVE: To assess elementary students' baseline sun-safety perceptions before an educational session.
METHODS: Elementary students completed online surveys before sun-safety presentations (May 2023-April 2024). Race/ethnicity data were collected for subgroup analyses.
RESULTS: Among 260 respondents (mean age 12; 51.2%

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease prevalent in Latin America and the Caribbean. Transmission is determined by ecological, biological and social (eco-bio-social) factors. Understanding the knowledge, attitudes, practices and perceptions of dengue's eco-bio-social factors among at-risk populations is essential for dengue prevention. We used the Ecohealth approach to investigate the socioeconomic and demographic factors associated with dengue knowledge, attitudes, practices and perceptions among residents of São Paulo.
METHODS: We conducted a concurrent nested mixed-methods study

BACKGROUND: Tanzania faces ever-rising concerns due to the recurrence of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. This necessitates a better understanding of the community perspectives in high-risk regions for effective risk communication and preparedness.
METHODS: This rapid ethnographic assessment study used explorative qualitative methods to collect data. People from diverse backgrounds participated in 59 in-depth interviews, 57 Key Informant interviews, and 35 focus group discussions. Data was analysed using a thematic analysis approach.

Objective: To explore experiences motivating doctors to become and remain GPs.Design and contributors: Qualitative analysis of written responses from an open-ended question about motivational experiences posted on an internet discussion list for GPs in Norway. Texts from 25 contributors were analysed with Systematic Text Condensation, supported by theories about calling as motivation. Results: Analysis revealed numerous aspects of motivation to become and remain a general practitioner. Inspirations from early experiences and skilled role models had conveyed values and offered insight into a fas

Introduction: Barriers to vaccination and the important role of healthcare professionals (HCPs) in influencing immunization decisions made by parents/patients have been well documented. Little information describes challenges that HCPs face in carrying out their role as vaccinators. Methods: We conducted a focus group study asking HCPs to describe their expectations as frontline vaccinators versus the day-to-day reality they faced. Participants described challenges impacting their ability and motivation as vaccinators, and proposed key solutions to the most important challenges. A total of 75 n

Despite being highly vulnerable to acquiring HIV, no effective evidence-based interventions (EBI) exist for street-connected young people (SCY) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Therefore, this paper describes the research process of adapting an existing EBI in Eldoret, Kenya using a modified ADAPT-ITT model with a young key population. From May to August 2018 we adapted the combined Stepping Stones and Creating Futures interventions. We used community-based participatory methods, focus group discussions, and working groups with four Peer Facilitators and 24 SCY aged 16-24 years. At

Iraqi refugees in the US experience a high prevalence of non-communicable diseases. In this article, we explore how cultural and structural realities intersect to influence utilisation of preventative healthcare and cancer screening with the aim of understanding health disparities in this population. We conducted three focus group discussions with a total of 14 Iraqi refugee women living in a northeastern US city in 2016 and analysed the qualitative data using a thematic analysis. Eight themes emerged from our data: (a) 'prevention is better than cure:' Iraqi refugee women maintain wellness; (

BACKGROUND: Primary human papillomavirus (HPV) cervical screening is due to be implemented in England within the next 2 years; however, the acceptability of HPV testing as the primary screening test is unclear. This study explores women's awareness and attitudes toward HPV testing/screening.
METHODS: Qualitative interviews (semistructured and focus group) were conducted with 46 women (aged 25-65 years) from community and secondary care settings. Data were analyzed by using the inductive-framework method.
RESULTS: Women were unaware that cervical screening currently includes HPV testing and l

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The prevalence of skin cancer remains at a high level in Australia. Young female Australian beachgoers are an at-risk population of skin cancer. Research on sun-protective beliefs held by this at-risk group is limited.
METHODS: Based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), we conducted a formative study to understand key sun safe messages among young female beachgoers in Queensland, including an elicitation study (Phase 1; N = 21, Mage = 24.30 years) and a two-wave questionnaire survey (Phase 2; N = 140, Mage = 23.96 years).
RESULTS: Following content analysis and regres

BACKGROUND: Medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) and somatoform disorders are common in general practices, but there is evidence that general practitioners (GPs) rarely use these codes. Assuming that correct classification and coding of symptoms and diseases are important for adequate management and treatment, insights into these processes could reveal problematic areas and possible solutions. Our study aims at exploring general practitioners' views on coding and reasons for not coding MUS/somatoform disorders.
METHODS: We invited GPs to participate in six focus groups (N = 42). Patient vigne

This paper explores prisoner and staff views of the current smoking policy in English and Welsh prisons (a partial ban permitting smoking in prison cells) and gauges perceptions of the implications of the forthcoming policy change which will see a total smoking ban within all parts of the institution. Five focus group discussions in one medium security male prison in England were undertaken. Three focus groups were undertaken with prisoners (both smokers and non-smokers) and two focus groups with staff. The findings suggest that smoking is embedded in the fabric of prison life and serves sever

United Kingdom (UK) paramedics are in a prime position to identify children and young people who are victims or at risk of sexual abuse. Paramedics have access, by phone, or in person, to unprepared homes and communities which other health professionals such as social workers may not. Little research exists however, investigating UK paramedic confidence in identifying child sexual abuse. This mixed-method explanatory sequential investigation used the self-reported confidence levels of 276 UK paramedics to inform the design of seven semi-structured focus groups with 25 UK paramedics from a larg

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Reproductive problems are becoming the most predominant health care problems in many countries. World Health Organization (WHO), in 2012, also exemplified maternal illnesses, for instance, birth asphyxia and post birth difficulties are rising at an alarming rate. In addition, not all abnormalities of the human reproductive system have the same origin; the effects of reproductive problems would likely been affected by both male and female. For easy accessibility and affordability, medicinal plants are playing crucial role in primary healthcare services in India a

OBJECTIVES: Conventionally, existing information on elder abuse has been institution based, professionally driven, and in high-income countries. This study addresses the prevailing gap in knowledge through direct consultation of older persons in the community about their perceptions of elder abuse.
METHOD: Eight focus group discussions were carried out among males and females aged 60 years and above in a rural and an urban community in south western Nigeria. Data were transcribed and analyzed based on emergent themes.
RESULTS: Findings from the study show that the perception of abuse by the

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea are largely symptomless diseases which, left untreated, can result in serious complications including infertility. Fertility problems currently affect approximately one in seven couples in the UK and there is increasing demand for couples seeking reproductive technologies. Young people are at greatest risk of contracting STIs, therefore this study aimed to identify young people's knowledge and beliefs about the link between untreated STIs and infertility.
METHODS: Focus groups were conducted with participants

Although reducing HIV risk is a primary motive for the design of HIV prevention interventions, the goals of the clients may be very different. Social theories of gender suggest that women, who often seek to resolve social and relational problems, may see HIV-prevention counseling as a mean of resolving partner violence. In contrast, men, who often worry about their physical strength, may seek to enroll in HIV-prevention programs when they experience physical symptoms unrelated to HIV. An unobtrusive study was conducted to observe enrollment in HIV risk-reduction counseling after measuring part

BACKGROUND: In the UK public concern about the safety of the combined measles, mumps and rubella [MMR] vaccine continues to impact on MMR coverage. Whilst the sharp decline in uptake has begun to level out, first and second dose uptake rates remain short of that required for population immunity. Furthermore, international research consistently shows that some parents lack confidence in making a decision about MMR vaccination for their children. Together, this work suggests that effective interventions are required to support parents to make informed decisions about MMR. This trial assessed the
