pH-dependency of skin permeability to salicylic acid was examined in excised guinea pig dorsal skin. Permeation followed the pH-partition theory at acidic pH. However, above pH 5.0 the observed permeability coefficients were larger than the estimated values obtained from the ratio of the undissociated forms. We report a study of adopted children admitted to the children's wards of Port Moresby General Hospital, Papua New Guinea over a 5-month period in 2000. The proportion of hospitalized children known to be adopted was almost three times that in the children's outpatients department. Gastroenteritis and neonatal sepsis were more common causes of admission in adopted children than in the general paediatric hospital population. A reduction of dehydroerythorbic acid (DERA) to erythorbic acid (ERA) in vitamin C-deficient guinea pigs was evaluated and compared with that of dehydroascorbic acid (DASA). The effects of norfloxacin and enoxacin were examined on spontaneous motor activity in the guinea-pig isolated ileum. Micromolar concentrations of both compounds caused a biphasic response consisting of relaxation followed by transient contraction. Nociceptin is a novel neuropeptide of the opioid peptide family recently identified as the endogenous ligand of the opioid receptor-like "orphan" receptor. Unlike other opioids, nociceptin has hyperalgesic effects in vivo. In the present study, nociceptin was found to inhibit electrical field stimulation-induced tachykinergic contractions of the guinea pig isolated bronchus preparation. Evidence of hearing loss in humans with systemic autoimmune disease has suggested the possibility of isolated forms of deafness originated by a autoimmune mechanism. Several authors reject McCabe's (1) proposed clinical description based mainly on response to treatment and have attempted to develop an animal model of autoimmune deafness.
