Olfactory reference syndrome: diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis.

Olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) has been defined as a psychiatric condition characterized by persistent preoccupation about body odour accompanied by shame, embarrassment, significant distress, avoidance behaviour and social isolation. ORS has however not been included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th edition) (DSM-IV) and, given that its primary symptoms may be found in various other disorders, differential diagnosis can be problematic. Using an illustrative case of ORS, we propose diagnostic criteria for ORS. We also argue that ORS represents a unique clus

Mechanism of action of an antiseptic, anti-odor mouthwash.

Inter-related determinants of oral malodor were measured over a three-hour period in 30 human subjects after mouthwash treatments. Re-odoration was important to mouthwash activity for 30 min. At post-treatment times of 60-180 min, the anti-odor activity of the product is due solely to its anti-microbial action.

Oral Myiasis is a Potential Risk in Patients with Special Health Care Needs.

Myiasis is a rare disease caused by invasion of tissue by larvae of certain dipteran flies. It is more common in countries with tropical climate. Oral myiasis is not a very common condition and many clinicians are unaware of its diagnosis. Common predisposing factors are poor oral hygiene, halitosis, trauma, senility, learning disabilities, physically and mentally challenged conditions. Oral myiasis can lead to rapid tissue destruction and disfigurement and requires immediate treatment. Treatment consists of manual removal of maggots from oral cavity after application of chemical agents. Use o…

Canine mycotic stomatitis due to Candida albicans.

Candida albicans, a medically important opportunistic yeast is described as the etiologic agent of stomatitis in dogs. The oral swabs collected from 34 dogs showing symptoms of stomatitis or gingivitis such as anorexia, halitosis, bleeding within the oral cavity, dysphagia, ptyalism (salivation) and submandibular lymphadenopathy were cultured for isolation of the causative agent. C. albicans was isolated from four (11.8%) dogs. The isolates were sensitive to clotrimazole, fluconazole and amphotericin-B but were resistant to nystatin. The routine application of Pal's sunflower seed medium and N…

Management of a congenitally shortened soft palate in a dog.

An 8-week-old puppy that was examined because of a nasal discharge was found to have a congenitally shortened soft palate. The palate was partially rebuilt with pharyngeal flaps constructed from the tonsillar crypts. The reconstructed soft palate extended approximately 40% of the distance between the caudal aspect of the hard palate and rostral tip of the epiglottis. During the first 18 months after surgery, the dog had 3 episodes of halitosis, sneezing, and mucopurulent nasal discharge but responded to antimicrobial treatment. The dog was fed dry dog food and drank water from an elevated bowl…

Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis): Chemistry and Oral Health.

Green tea is a widely consumed beverage worldwide. Numerous studies have suggested about the beneficial effects of green tea on oral conditions such as dental caries, periodontal diseases and halitosis. However, to date there have not been many review articles published that focus on beneficial effects of green tea on oral disease. The aim of this publication is to summarize the research conducted on the effects of green tea on oral cavity. Green tea might help reduce the bacterial activity in the oral cavity that in turn, can reduce the aforementioned oral afflictions. Furthermore, the antiox…

Palatal erosion and oronasal fistulation following covered nasopharyngeal stent placement in two dogs.

Treatment options for dogs with nasopharyngeal stenosis include fluoroscopic placement of metallic stents. Reported complications include entrapment of hair and food, obstruction and persistent nasal discharge. Two toy breed dogs were examined for persistent nasal discharge and halitosis at 4 and 20 months after placement of permanent metallic stents for acquired nasopharyngeal stenosis. Full thickness defects were found in the palate of both dogs, with extensive communication between the mouth and the nasal passages. Portions of the metal stent were observed within the lesion in both patients…

Vaccines and photodynamic therapies for oral microbial-related diseases.

The mouth is a favorable habitat for a great variety of bacteria. Microbial composition of dental plaque is the usual cause of various oral diseases in humans, including dental caries, periodontal disease and halitosis. In general, oral antibacterial agents such as antibiotics are commonly used to treat oral bacterial infection. Traditional periodontal surgery is painful and time-consuming. In addition, bacterial resistance and toxicity of antibiotics have become a global pandemic and unavoidable. Recently, vaccines for dental caries and periodontal disease have been developed and applied. Mor…

Oral malodor: a review of the literature.

Oral malodor or halitosis is any unpleasant odor emerging from the mouth that is detected by others. Many patients experience extreme discomfort and embarrassment and therefore seek help for this problem. Oral causes, such as poor oral hygiene, periodontal disease, tongue coating, food impaction, unclean dentures, faulty restorations, and dry mouth, are far more common than nonoral causes of malodor. Management may include simple measures such as scaling and root planing, instructions in oral hygiene, tongue cleaning, and mouth rinsing. This paper reviews the current knowledge, etiology, diagn…

Oral Microbiota Changes during Orthodontic Treatment.

Orthodontic treatment has become increasingly popular due to its benefits in improving facial and smile aesthetics, self-esteem and the function of the stomatognathic apparatus. However, orthodontic appliances make it more difficult to brush teeth effectively, as they interfere with tooth brushing and facilitate the accumulation of dental plaque (biofilm), which induces a quantitative and qualitative change in the oral microbiota. It can cause several adverse effects, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, white spot lesions (WSL), caries and halitosis, induced by an increase in periodontopathogen…

Squamous cell carcinoma arising in a Zenker diverticulum.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising in a Zenker diverticulum (ZD) is an extremely rare entity. Approximately 50 cases have been reported worldwide. We report a case of a 74-year-old man who presented to our institution with chronic regurgitation, dysphagia and halitosis. The patient was initially seen in 2015 at which point he reported a 10-year history of these symptoms and was diagnosed with ZD. A barium swallow was done revealing a large posterior esophageal diverticulum with significant residual contrast within the diverticulum lumen. Given these findings, he was taken for open surgical …

Grub in the mouth: an unusual case with review of literature.

Oral myiasis is a rare disease, identified primarily in non-industrialised nations. It is caused fundamentally by the attack of larvae from Dipteran flies on the human tissues. Predisposing factors for oral myiasis are extraction wounds, destitute oral cleanliness, meagreness, mouth breathing amid rest, suppurative injuries, necrotic tissues, diabetes and perivascular infections primarily within the elderly, extreme halitosis, alcohol addiction, cerebral paralysis and components that favour prolonged mouth opening. Myiasis may have predilection to patients with mental challenges, cerebral pals…

Tooth loss associated with the use of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: The frequent tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)-related adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are nephrotoxicity and bone toxicity; however, tooth-related ADRs of TDF have not been reported. We describe the case of a 41-year-old Han Chinese man with chronic hepatitis B with TDF-associated tooth loss. CASE SUMMARY: He presented with halitosis, gingival swelling and tooth loss after TDF use. After excluding the possibility of other drug-related ADRs, TDF was considered a possible cause and switched with tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF). After 6 months, the oral symptom…
