[Selected hand skin characteristics of laboratory diagnosticians].

BACKGROUND: Chronic skin exposure to a wet work environment, as well as disinfectants are factors contributing to epidermal barrier damage. This disturbs its protective functions and promotes the development of dermatoses. All these factors occur in the work environment of a laboratory diagnostician. The aim of the paper was to analyze selected skin parameters and skin lesions in the hands of laboratory diagnosticians. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Overall, 50 laboratory diagnosticians employed in a laboratory in Kraków, Poland, took part in the study. After the interview, the skin pH and moisture co

Prevention of dryness and eczema of the hands of hospital staff by emulsion cleansing instead of washing with soap.

The acceptability of two handwashing/cleansing methods, cleansing with emulsion or washing with liquid soap and water, were compared in a randomized, prospective long-term study. Thirty-eight members of hospital staff who had a history of hand skin dryness or eczema and a need for frequent handwashing used either liquid soap or emulsion for handwashing or cleansing. The clinical assessment of skin condition was done blindly by the same dermatologist at the onset of the study, and after 2 and 4 months with a predetermined scoring system. The median skin dryness index of persons in the liquid so

A 15-year retrospective study on the prevalence of onychomycosis in psoriatic vs non-psoriatic patients: A new European shift from dermatophytes towards yeast.

Because of their similar clinical presentation, discrimination between nail psoriasis and onychomycosis often is difficult. We aim to investigate the actual frequency of onychomycosis in psoriatic patients and to compare it between psoriatic and non-psoriatic patients. This retrospective study included a total of 9281 patients, referring to our Mycology Laboratory from September 2003 to May 2018. The patients are divided into two groups: PsoGroup (patients with psoriasis) and non-PsoGroup (non-psoriatic patient). Direct microscopic examination with 20% KOH and culture was carried out in both g

Acquired Acrodermatitis Enteropathica Syndrome in a Kidney Transplant Receipt: A Case Report.

Acrodermatitis enteropathica syndrome (AE) is a clinical entity that results in severe zinc deficiency. It can be genetic or acquired. Acquired AE has been reported in patients with chronic liver disease, malabsorption syndrome, sickle cell anemia, and chronic renal failure. We present a kidney transplant recipient with skin rash and watery diarrhea. The patient had low serum zinc levels, which quickly resolved after zinc supplementation. Skin biopsy showed cytoplasmic pallor and vacuolization and ballooning degeneration of keratinocytes within the superficial epidermis, which may have led to

Palmoplantar psoriasis.

Palmoplantar psoriasis refers to a localized psoriasis variant. The disease can be associated with many clinical forms, including predominantly pustular lesions to thick scaly, hyperkeratotic plaques, or an overlapping of both of them. Palmoplantar psoriasis accounts for 3-4% of all psoriasis cases in most studies. Although it is localized only on the palms and the soles, the fissures, the hardening of the tissue, and hyperkeratosis affect daily routine activities. Taking the body surface area as a measure of severity can sometimes be misleading. In clinical practice, the level of functional i

Contact Sensitization to Emulsifying Agents: An Underrated Issue?

BACKGROUND: The evidence on the safety of topical preparations containing emulsifiers is limited. OBJECTIVES: The aims of the study were to assess (1) the prevalence of sensitization to some emulsifiers commonly found in topical products, (2) the sensitization to emulsifiers in relation to sex, age, and predisposing factors, and (3) the frequency of concomitant sensitization to other common allergens. METHODS: All consecutive patients presenting to the Allergy Unit of our Dermatological Department for allergological investigation were enrolled. All patients were patch tested with the Italian

Onychomycosis: burden of disease and the role of topical antifungal treatment.

Onychomycosis is not just a cosmetic problem. It is a common disorder that may be a reservoir of infection and lead to significant medical problems. In addition, onychomycosis may cause a substantial decrease in quality of life. An understanding of the disorder and updated management is important for all health care professionals. Onychomycosis is the most common nail disorder in adults. It is four to seven times more frequent in toenails, where it often involves several nails. It is a progressive disease, and although not life threatening it is inappropriately considered purely a cosmetic pro

[Reactive perforating collagenosis].

BACKGROUND: Reactive perforating collagenosis (RPC) belongs to the group of perforating dermatoses, which comprises elastosis perforans serpiginosa, RPC, perforating folliculitis and Kyrle's disease. RPC was initially described as a distinctive form of transepithelial elimination of altered collagen related to superficial trauma. Two types are distinguished: a hereditary type (MIM 216700), which is rare and begins during early childhood, and a second type, called acquired RPC, which is more frequent, appears in adults and is associated with other diseases, diabetes mellitus, renal insufficienc
