How the 'HIV/TB co-epidemic-HIV stigma-TB stigma' syndemic impacts on the use of occupational health services for TB in South African hospitals: a structural equation modelling analysis of the baseline data from the HaTSaH Study (cluster RCT).

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) has become an occupational health hazard in South African hospitals where healthcare workers (HCWs) are additionally confronted daily with HIV and its associated stigma, causing a syndemic. Early TB diagnosis and treatment are vital, but the uptake of these services through occupational healthcare units (OHUs) is low. The current study hypothesises that (1) the link between HIV and TB and (2) the perceived HIV stigmatisation by colleagues create (3) a double HIV-TB stigma which increases (4) internalised TB stigma and leads to (5) a lower willingness to use OHU

Mental health disorders, behavioral health problems, fatigue and sleep outcomes in remotely piloted aircraft/manned aircraft pilots, and remotely piloted aircraft crew, U.S. Air Force, 1 October 2003-30 June 2019.

U.S. Air Force (USAF) manned aircraft (MA) pilots and remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) pilots and their non-pilot crew form part of the forward-most contingent of airpower. Limited information exists on the incidence of mental health (MH) disorders, behavioral health (BH) problems, sleep disorders, and fatigue among these groups. Incidence rates and incidence rate ratios of these conditions were calculated among all active component USAF members during the period from 1 October 2003 to 30 June 2019. Compared to those in all other USAF occupations, RPA and MA pilots had statistically significant

Temporal changes in occupational risks of COVID-19 hospitalisation in Germany, 2020-2021: a case-cohort study.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, certain occupational groups faced elevated infection risks. This study investigated changes in occupational risks of COVID-19 hospitalisation between 2020 and 2021. METHODS: Using a case-cohort design, we analysed data from Germany's Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse statutory health insurance, including 28 925 COVID-19 hospitalisation cases and 498 484 non-cases in 2021. HRs with administrative workers as reference were calculated using weighted and stratified Cox regression models, adjusting for age, sex, comorbidities and socioeconomic status. The ratio

The importance of work as compared to other forms of daily occupations for wellbeing and functioning among persons with long-term mental illness.

This study investigated the importance of competitive work as compared to participating in community-based activities and having no regular daily activity for people with long-term mental illness. One hundred and three persons visiting an outpatient unit and representing the three targeted occupational conditions were randomized to the study and assessed on satisfaction with daily occupations, health, and wellbeing. Persons with work were more satisfied with their daily occupations and were interviewer-rated as better functioning than the other groups, but the groups did not differ on self-rat

Occupation and COVID-19 mortality in England: a national linked data study of 14.3 million adults.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate occupational differences in COVID-19 mortality and test whether these are confounded by factors such as regional differences, ethnicity and education or due to non-workplace factors, such as deprivation or prepandemic health. METHODS: Using a cohort study of over 14 million people aged 40-64 years living in England, we analysed occupational differences in death involving COVID-19, assessed between 24 January 2020 and 28 December 2020.We estimated age-standardised mortality rates (ASMRs) per 100 000 person-years at risk stratified by sex and occupation. We estimated the

Intra-role conflict: a result of naive attempts toward professionalization.

In an attempt to become professional, many allied health occupations have focused upon acquiring the traditional attributes associated with a profession while neglecting the professionalization process. As a result, members of allied health occupations that claim professional status may experience the problems of lack of occupational prestige, limited opportunity for vertical mobility, and occupational burn-out. A study was conducted to explore the possible links among level of training program socialization, level of professional identity, and level of intra-role conflict in medical technolog…

Occupational mortality from squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus in the United States during 1991-1996.

The epidemiology of esophageal squamous cell cancer has remained poorly understood. The occupational distribution of this cancer may provide clues about its yet unknown etiology. Data files from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the United States offer a unique source to study causes of death, broken down by occupation and industry. The number of deaths from esophageal cancer was retrieved from the computerized US vital statistics. Mortality by occupation or industry was expressed as standardized proportional mortality ratio (PMR), adjusted by age, gender, and ethnicity. Betw

Occupation and three-year incidence of respiratory symptoms and lung function decline: the ARIC Study.

BACKGROUND: Specific occupations are associated with adverse respiratory health. Inhalation exposures encountered in these jobs may place workers at risk of new-onset respiratory disease. METHODS: We analyzed data from 8,967 participants from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, a longitudinal cohort study. Participants included in this analysis were free of chronic cough and phlegm, wheezing, asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other chronic lung conditions at the baseline examination, when they were aged 45-64 years. Using data collected in the baseline and first fol

Fragrance as an occupational allergen.

Sensitization to fragrance is believed to occur mainly outside the workplace. This study addresses the frequency of fragrance allergy in patch test patients of differing occupations during a 15 year period. The occupation most strongly associated with fragrance allergy in both sexes was health care work (positive tests in 11.7% of males and 10.4% of females). Retired individuals also had high rates of fragrance allergy (11.6% of males and 14.5% of females), and the prevalence of sensitization increased with advancing age. Health care workers and metal workers had statistically significantly hi

The association between core functions of algorithmic management and work-related health problems: indications for effects beyond well-known psychosocial stressors.

INTRODUCTION: Algorithmic management (AM) marks a transformation in work organization as managerial decisions increasingly rely on data-driven algorithms. While research suggests that AM may affect employee health, empirical evidence remains fragmented. This study examines whether associations between AM and work-related health impairments generalize across occupations. METHODS: Data from the cross-sectional Flash Eurobarometer "OSH Pulse" (N = 27,242 workers) were analyzed using cross-classified mixed-effects logistic regression. Exposure to AM-algorithmic monitoring, task allocation, and pe

Occupational Therapy's Role in Return to Occupations Post-Concussion in High School Athletes.

AIM: This study was designed to explore experiences of high school athletes in order to understand their occupational engagement after sustaining a sports-related concussion. The study explored the role occupational therapists (OTs) can play in post-concussion care while supporting adolescents in returning to meaningful occupations. METHODS: The study utilized a qualitative, phenomenological approach by conducting interviews with high school athletes to understand their participation in occupations during recovery. Six student-athletes from 14-18 years of age were interviewed. RESULTS: The f

Occupation and Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and Its Subtypes: A Pooled Analysis from the InterLymph Consortium.

BACKGROUND: Various occupations have been associated with an elevated risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), but results have been inconsistent across studies. OBJECTIVES: We investigated occupational risk of NHL and of four common NHL subtypes with particular focus on occupations of a priori interest. METHODS: We conducted a pooled analysis of 10,046 cases and 12,025 controls from 10 NHL studies participating in the InterLymph Consortium. We harmonized the occupational coding using the 1968 International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO-1968) and grouped occupations previously asso

Update: Osteoarthritis and Spondylosis, Active Component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2016-2020.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common adult joint disease and accounts for significant morbidity burdens among U.S. civilian and military populations. During 2016-2020, the crude overall rates of incident OA and spondylosis diagnoses among U.S. active component service members were 630.9 per 100,000 person-years (p-yrs) and 958.2 per 100,000 p-yrs, respectively. Crude annual rates of both conditions decreased markedly from 2016 through 2020 with declines evident in all of the demographic and military subgroups examined. Compared to their respective counterparts, crude overall rates of OA diag

Occupational differences in COVID-19 hospital admission and mortality risks between women and men in Scotland: a population-based study using linked administrative data.

OBJECTIVES: Occupations vary with respect to workplace factors that influence exposure to COVID-19, such as ventilation, social contacts and protective equipment. Variations between women and men may arise because they have different occupational roles or behavioural responses. We estimated occupational differences in COVID-19 hospital admission and mortality risks by sex. METHODS: We combined (1) individual-level data from 2011 Census with (2) health records and (3) household-level information from residential identifiers, using a Scottish cohort of 1.7 million adults aged 40-64 years betwee

Living with polio and postpolio syndrome in the United Kingdom.

The term Postpolio Syndrome (PPS) is used to describe new and late manifestations of poliomyelitis that occur later in life in polio survivors. Polio had been eradicated in the United Kingdom (UK) and most of Europe, although this is not the case in all countries. Research in this area has tended to focus upon the impact of polio and PPS on health status and functional health rather than its overall effect on people's lives. This study's two main aims were to explore the ways in which polio and PPS in the UK has affected the respondents' lives and to ascertain their views about how the quality
