Interdisciplinary modelling approaches for One Health in agri-food systems: a scoping review and conceptual analysis.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, the One Health approach must be applied to a changing food system to simultaneously support nutritional, infectious disease, and environmental outcomes. Successful interventions by public health authorities will require quantitative modelling for evaluating trade-offs and prioritization. Herein, we reviewed methodologies for One Health modelling relevant to the food system and proposed a framework for supporting international and national One Health initiatives within governmental institutions. METHODS: This study first identified an operational scope of One Health b

Development of an Implementation Strategy Plan to Improve Care for Pediatric Emergency Department Patients With a Possible Sexually Transmitted Infection.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the existence of evidence-based guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, studies have demonstrated the need for improvement in the evaluation and treatment of adolescents and young adults with a possible sexually transmitted infection (STI) presenting for care in pediatric emergency departments (PEDs) and general emergency departments (EDs) in the United States. We created an implementation strategy plan for our PED designed to improve STI care for patients. METHODS: Using the Tailored Implementation in Chronic Diseases (TICD) determinants framework,

Forecasting continued increase in primary and secondary syphilis in the United States, 2024-2033: a state-level multi-model ensemble study.

INTRODUCTION: Primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis burden in the United States has increased substantially in recent years, underscoring the need for forecasting approaches that can inform medium-term public health planning. METHODS: We assembled a state-level panel dataset covering 2003-2023 and evaluated five candidate forecasting models: autoregressive model of order 1 [AR(1)], a state-specific linear trend baseline, Bayesian negative binomial regression, neural network, and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). Models were trained using historical state-level surveillance and covariate dat

Behaviour change practices in exercise referral schemes: developing realist programme theory of implementation.

BACKGROUND: Exercise Referral Schemes have been delivered worldwide in developed countries to augment physical activity levels in sedentary patients with a range of health issues, despite their utility being questioned. Understanding the implementation mechanisms of behaviour change practices is important to avoid inappropriate decommissioning and support future service planning. The aim of this study was to develop initial theories to understand what influences the behaviour change practices of Exercise Referral practitioners within the United Kingdom. METHODS: An eight-month focused ethnogr

Community-based interventions to support aging in place and functional independence in older adults: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, ensuring the autonomy and wellbeing of older adults living at home has become increasingly important. Supporting independence is central to aging in place, which requires access to appropriate health and social resources. In this context, community-based public health interventions may play an important role in addressing physical, cognitive, and psychosocial challenges associated with aging. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials examining community-based public health interventions that prom

Geographic differences in contraception provision and utilization among federally funded family planning clinics in South Carolina and Alabama.

PURPOSE: Access to the full range of contraceptive options is essential to providing patient-centered reproductive health care. Women living in rural areas often experience more barriers to contraceptive care than women living in urban areas. Therefore, federally funded family planning clinics are important for ensuring women have access to contraceptive care, especially in rural areas. This study examines contraceptive provision, factors supporting contraceptive provision, and contraceptive utilization among federally funded family planning clinics in 2 Southern states. METHODS: All health d

Impact of online community learning programs on TB prevention behaviors.

This study compares an online community learning program with standard community tuberculosis (TB) education to improve TB prevention behaviors. Evidence that digital TB education with peer discussion changes behavior remains limited. A prospective cluster-randomized trial assigned community clusters to the online program or to usual education and referral pathways, with surveys at enrollment and at 3 months. The primary measure was change in a TB prevention behavior index, with an intervention minus control contrast of 0.51 [0.12, 0.9] (p = 0.014). Screening or referral completion was higher

Medication Treatments for Youth and Young Adults With Opioid Use Disorder.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) and overdose deaths are increasingly prevalent among youth and young adults; however, the evidence-based medication-assisted treatments (MATs) that have U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for the treatment of adults are not approved for persons aged 16 to 18 years. New guidelines from the American Society of Addiction Medicine provide information on the risks and benefits of MAT with youth and young adults that help guide decision making. Clinical decisions require a thorough physical and psychiatric evaluation, risk/benefit analysis in treatment planning, and

Ethiopia: an emerging family planning success story.

From 1990 to 2011, contraceptive use in Ethiopia increased ninefold and the total fertility rate fell from 7.0 to 4.8. These are two dramatic illustrations of a family planning success story that has emerged over the last two decades and is still emerging. What are the main elements of this success? We posit that the four most significant factors are: political will, generous donor support, nongovernmental and public-private partnerships, and the government's establishment of a network of health extension workers. In this study, we look at these factors and how their interaction increased the

Traumatic brain injury as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease: a review.

Accumulating epidemiological evidence implicates traumatic brain injury as a pathogenic agent in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Considering the increase in the prevalence of both traumatic brain injury and AD in recent times, the possibility that brain trauma may provoke the early development of AD has important implications for health service planning, preventative efforts, and medico-legal compensation settlements. This paper evaluates the plausibility of the proposed link between traumatic brain injury and AD, largely by way of exploring a theoretical perspective advanced by S

Behaviour change interventions for the control and elimination of schistosomiasis: A systematic review of evidence from low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: For the last two decades, schistosomiasis control efforts have focussed on preventive treatment. The disease, however, still affects over 200 million people worldwide. Behaviour change (BC) interventions can strengthen control by interrupting transmission through modifying exposure behaviour (water contact) or transmission practices (open urination/defaecation); or through fostering treatment seeking or acceptance. This review examines these interventions to assess their effectiveness in modifying risk practices and affecting epidemiological trends. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:

An Interim Report on the Provision of Prenatal Care for Pregnant Mothers Experiencing Homelessness in Hawai'i.

The State of Hawai'i ranks third in the nation for homelessness. Homelessness disproportionately affects the health care of pregnant mothers and their children. These homeless persons are at risk for malnutrition, physical and psychological trauma, injuries and chronic illnesses, and have difficulty accessing healthcare and social services. With the generous support of a Waiwai Ola grant from AlohaCare, a non-profit health plan in Hawai'i, the Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians at the University Health Partners of Hawai'i created a pilot program with a midwife and medical assistant to provide
