A young adult male white Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) presented with hindlimb ataxia. Cervical and lumbar myelography revealed a compressive lesion of the cord at C(6-7). Corticosteroid therapy and confinement failed to provide lasting remission of signs. A modified, inverted cone ventral slot decompression was used to remove the fibrous material causing cord compression at C(6-7). Temporary Horner's syndrome and laryngeal paresis developed postsurgically because of excessive tissue retraction. The animal recovered normal ambulatory function 6 wk after surgery.

Wistar albino rats were given copper acetate in the drinking water before and during pregnancy. Histological examination and a copper analysis of the liver and kidneys of the pregnant rats, showed copper deposition with a subsequent inflammatory reaction, in these organs. Examination of 11.5 day old embryos showed moderate retardation of growth and differentiation, especially of the neural tube. Examination of the ossification centers of 21.5 day old fetuses and newborn rats showed reduced numbers of ossification centers in the vertebrae, sternum and forelimb and hindlimb phalanges.

In anesthetized cats selective activation of fine muscle afferents of the hindlimb by KCl or bradykinin (Brad.) induced reflex changes in the urinary bladder. The nature of the reflex responses depended on the functional state of the bladder: they were excitatory when the bladder was quiescent and inhibitory during large, slow, rhythmic micturition contractions. Selective activation of large muscle primary afferents by succinylcholine was ineffective. All reflexes disappeared after cutting the sciatic or the pelvic nerves. Transection of the hypogastric nerves to the bladder had no effect.

AIMS: We previously showed that hindlimb ischemia-reperfusion (IR) enhanced glucose uptake in the liver through the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. Although we suggested that the key glucose transporter (GLUT) in this hepatic glucose uptake was GLUT4 by western blotting, the molecular weight of GLUT4 was nearly the same as that of GLUT2, which is predominantly expressed in the liver. We primarily conducted a histological evaluation to determine whether IR specifically accelerates the overexpression of GLUT4, rather than GLUT2, in the hepatocytes in vitro and in vivo.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cell loss in the striatum and cerebral cortex, leading to a decline in motor control and eventually death.
