Effect of entrapped water on NAPL migration in unsaturated fractures.

The migration of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) in unsaturated fractures involves NAPL-water-air three-phase displacement. Understanding the impact of entrapped water on this migration process is crucial for predicting NAPL flow and solute transport in the fractured vadose zone. This study presents visualized flow experiments to systematically investigate NAPL (n-octane) invasion behaviors in initially dry and water-entrapped unsaturated single fractures by varying fracture inclination angle and injection flow rate. The experimental results reveal that entrapped water fundamentally shifts NA

Hidden contaminants in a coral paradise: fate, transport, source apportionment, and toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the coral reef ecosystems of the Lakshadweep archipelago.

This study examined the environmental fate, source apportionment, and associated ecological and human health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the coral reef ecosystems of four inhabited islands in the Lakshadweep Archipelago (Kadmat, Kiltan, Kalpeni, and Minicoy). Water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediments were collected from reef lagoons during April 2025 and analysed for 16 PAHs congeners designated as priority by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). PAHs were in the range of 20.9-240 ng/L in the dissolved phase, 146-356 ng/L in the SPM,

Environmental fate of ciprofloxacin in agricultural soils under realistic irrigation water matrices: kinetic, column transport, thermodynamic, mechanistic and machine learning insights.

The combined influence of soil properties, irrigation water chemistry, and transport processes on antibiotic fate remains poorly understood. Here, ciprofloxacin (CIP) retention, transport, and remobilization were investigated in three agricultural soil types under four different irrigation water matrices using batch, column, thermodynamic, mechanistic, and machine-learning approaches. At elevated concentrations (10 mg/L), all soils exhibited comparable retention capacities, whereas substantial differences emerged at extremely elevated concentrations (150 mg/L), with maximum adsorption capaciti

Spatial evolution and geochemical controls of U- and Th-series radionuclides in acid mine drainage affected waters of the Odiel Basin, SW Spain.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) affects the mobility of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), but its influence on the distribution of U- and Th-series radionuclides in polymetallic mining districts and downstream estuaries remains poorly understood. Here, we characterize the spatial evolution and isotopic signatures of U- and Th-series radionuclides in the dissolved fraction along the Oraque-Meca-Odiel river-estuary system (SW Spain). This system shows a strong geochemical gradient, from highly acidic AMD headwaters (locally pH < 3; high sulfate and metal concentrations) through weakly a

Driving factors for the distribution of i/eARGs in livestock and poultry manure and related wastewater across China.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), as emerging pollutants, have become a growing environmental concern owing to their wide distribution, durability, and potential adverse effects on humans, animals and the surrounding environments. Livestock and poultry manure and related wastewater (LPMW), the major reservoir of antibiotics, has higher abundance of extracellular ARGs (eARGs) compared with other environments. This review summarizes the abundance of intracellular ARGs (iARGs) and eARGs in LPMW in China. The absolute abundance of iARGs and eARGs in LPMW were 103-1012 and 102-1010 copies/mL or c

Back diffusion of a Th-230-Ra-226 decay chain in a multilayer fractured-rock matrix with stagnant-zone and skin effects.

This study develops a one-dimensional numerical model to investigate back diffusion of the Th-230-Ra-226 decay chain in fractured crystalline rock with a stagnant water zone, an altered fracture-skin layer, and an intact host-rock matrix. Radionuclide-specific boundary conditions are applied: Th-230 is supplied from the stagnant zone via time-dependent source strength functions (step, exponential, and linear depletion), whereas Ra-226 is constrained to a zero-concentration boundary so that all Ra-226 originates from in situ matrix decay. The finite-difference model, validated against two analy

Soil dissolved organic carbon governs the transport of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics in heterogeneous soil systems.

The fate and transport of microplastics (MPs) in heterogeneous soil systems remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the transport behaviors of three distinct MP polymers, polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), with twelve representative Chinese soil colloids using saturated column experiments packed with quartz sand. Without soil colloids, PS and PP exhibited high transport with breakthrough mass recoveries ranging from ∼70 to 90%. Notably, the introduction of various soil colloids exerted a negligible impact on the transport of PS

Contaminants of emerging concern in Mediterranean groundwater: The more we analyse, the more diversity we observe.

A review of case studies investigating contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in Mediterranean groundwater (2006-2024) highlights where there are few investigations or limited CECs analysed, there is important information missing on CEC diversity. This was evident from the relatively high diversity of CECs reported in the 30 publications on Spanish groundwaters, including 127 types of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), 36 pesticides and 26 industrial products. In comparison, publications from other Mediterranean countries were fewer (≤ 7/country, and ≤ 3/country for southern

Lomefloxacin-induced stress on groundwater denitrification and its recovery potential.

The co-contamination of antibiotics and nitrate has raised global concerns, as antibiotics exert an inhibitory effect on denitrification in the environment. However, the recovery potential of groundwater systems exposed to low antibiotic concentrations, especially at ng/L levels, remains underexplored. This study focused on lomefloxacin (LOM)-a contaminant frequently detected in groundwater-and investigated denitrification recovery dynamics within 58 days following acute exposure to LOM via batch experiments. The results indicated that, in comparison to the carbon source, the impact of LOM at g

Beyond advection: A Lagrangian framework for microplastic transport in depth-averaged shallow water flows.

Microplastics are an emerging contaminant in aquatic environments, posing risks to ecosystems and human health. Reliable computational tools capable of predicting microplastic transport are therefore essential for environmental assessment and mitigation strategies. This work presents a Lagrangian Particle Tracking (LPT-MP) model for microplastic transport under depth-averaged shallow flow conditions, coupled online with a two-dimensional Eulerian shallow water solver. The LPT-MP model incorporates the main processes governing microplastic dynamics, including horizontal advection and turbulent

Isotopic and hydrochemical evidence for sulfate transport and transformation in a confined Permian sandstone aquifer of a coal mine: evaporite dissolution and bacterial reduction.

Sulfate is a key geochemical indicator in coal mine groundwater systems. Previous studies have demonstrated that sulfate in coal mine groundwater primarily originates from sulfide oxidation and evaporite dissolution, whereas sulfate reduction mediated by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) serves as a major consumption pathway. However, the coupled effects of evaporite dissolution and SRB reduction on sulfate dynamics in well-confined aquifer systems remain poorly understood. In this study, sulfate sources and transformation mechanisms in a deep confined Permian sandstone aquifer within a coal min

Unravelling the role of sediment disposition influenced redox-dominated geochemical processes in distribution of geogenic contaminants in groundwater of a major fluvial aquifer: Implications for safe drinking water sources.

Groundwater-sourced drinking water in large sedimentary basins across the world are highly vulnerable to geogenic contamination. The Brahmaputra River Basin (BRB) in the northeastern part of India is found to have widespread groundwater contamination from redox-sensitive elements, arsenic (As) and nickel (Ni), besides having elevated levels of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and fluoride (F-), deteriorating the drinking water quality. Here, we show that concentrations of As, Ni, Fe, and Mn exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water permissible limits observed in the BRB groundwater

Pseudo-сolloidal species of actinides in contaminated aquifers. Insights from experimental and modeling approaches.

The release of actinides into the environment poses a significant risk of their uncontrolled migration in various physical and chemical forms. A key migration mechanism for all actinides is their pseudocolloidal transport, which occurs through sorption onto suspended particles of soils, clays, iron oxides and hydroxides, and other colloids surface in groundwater. This phenomenon facilitates their potential transport over considerable distances, creating additional environmental risks. The behavior of these pseudocolloidal particles is currently not well understood and is highly dependent on a

Water quality assessment in multi-salinity groundwater of muddy coastal zones using a function-adaptive weight water quality index.

Muddy coastal aquifer subject to seawater (saltwater) intrusion suffer from severe freshwater scarcity and fragile groundwater environments. Traditional groundwater water quality evaluation frameworks relying merely on drinking water standards often categorize high-salinity groundwater (total dissolved solids, TDS > 3 g/L) as low-quality resources, while neglecting their exploitable value for diversified functional applications. To fill this research gap, this study proposes a salinity-based Function-Adaptive Weight Water Quality Index (FAWQI) for targeted, multi-functional groundwater quality

Parameterization and prediction of environment-dependent colloid transport in saturated porous media: A physics-informed machine learning approach.

Colloid transport in porous media exhibits pronounced variability under varying solution chemistry, hydrodynamic conditions, and pore structural characteristics. Conventional advection-dispersion models typically treat transport parameters as constants, which limits their predictive capability across variable environmental conditions. This study develops a physics-informed machine learning (ML) framework to parameterize and predict colloid transport under varying environmental conditions by deriving explicit expressions for key transport parameters. Built on 98 column-scale experimental record

An explainable machine learning surrogate framework for colloid-facilitated contaminant transport in porous media.

Colloids act as important transport carriers in subsurface environments, facilitating the migration of strongly sorbing contaminants and significantly influencing breakthrough curve (BTC) in porous media. This study develops a machine-learning surrogate model capable of accurately reproducing BTCs generated by an equilibrium colloid-facilitated contaminant transport model over a wide range of transport conditions. The mechanistic model was first validated against the experimental phenanthrene transport data, demonstrating excellent agreement under both colloid-free and colloid-present conditio

Joint use of ground-penetrating radar and hydraulic-partitioning tracer tomography to improve characterization and long-term prediction of DNAPL source zones in multi-facies aquifers.

Facies-controlled heterogeneity, including fine-grained lenses and abrupt textural transitions, produces irregular and non-Gaussian DNAPL source zone architecture (SZA) that strongly influences mass-transfer and long-term dissolution. Reconstructing both permeability and DNAPL saturation therefore requires estimating high-dimensional, coupled parameter fields that are poorly constrained by sparse hydraulic and tracer observations. Geophysical methods such as electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) can supplement these data, yet ERT often lacks resolution in s

Effects of cyclic temperature from geothermal heating on BTEX biodegradation in soil.

Geothermal heating is a sustainable technique used for heating and cooling of buildings using geothermal heat pumps (GHPs). In this study, a novel idea is proposed to use the excess heat injected into the subsurface during geothermal heating as a temperature source to enhance the bioremediation of pollutants. Since in-situ bioremediation in the subsurface can be slow due to the low subsurface temperatures (10-15 °C), that limit microbial degradation activity, geothermal heating can provide optimum growth temperatures, proliferating microbial growth and enhancing bioremediation sustainably.
