A new test for abnormal sensitization of the body with M. tuberculosis proposed by the authors implies conduction of leukocyte migration inhibition test under theophylline-induced block of T-suppressor function. Examination of 82 tuberculous patients and 30 healthy subjects proved high accuracy of the test able to identify the sensitization significantly, irrespective of the activity of T-cell suppressive population. The method is applicable also in latent tuberculosis, the detection of which permits earlier introduction of adequate therapy.

Food hypersensitivity is reported to play an immunopathogenic role in atopic dermatitis in approximately one-third of children. In 320 selected children with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis, 63% of children were found to have food hypersensitivity by double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges. Both IgE-mediated mast cell and mononuclear cell activation appear responsible for the eczematous lesions resulting from ingestion of food allergens.

We present a case of hypersensitivity angiitis causing a segmental infarction of the testis. The lesion presented as a discrete, palpable mass that led to orchiectomy. Hypersensitivity angiitis has not been reported previously to affect the testes or to produce a segmental infarct in any solid organ. A discussion is given of the vasculitides, especially periarteritis nodosa, that may involve the testes.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is infrequently reported in children. This article describes a 15-year-old girl who presented with insidious onset of dyspnea and weight loss. A hamster and doves were housed in her bedroom. Chest radiographs showed bilateral nodular infiltrates. Pulmonary function tests showed a restrictive pattern with O2 desaturation at rest. We studied the usefulness of tetanus toxoid (TT) as a skin test antigen in assessing cellular immune function. Hospitalized patients were skin tested with four antigens, and the response rates between these antigens were compared. Candida and mumps antigens resulted in significantly more positive responses than did TT or PPD. The response rate to the TT significantly declined in older patients, suggesting these persons may not be adequately immunized against tetanus. Pretreatment with hydralazine caused prolongation of hypnosis induced by hexobarbital (80 mg/kg, i.p.) or intracerebroventricular injection of phenobarbital (1 mg/rat). Under the same condition, brain concentration of hexobarbital was lower than that of no hydralazine treatment. Significant developments during the last 25 years are discussed and interpreted. The following areas of delayed hypersensitivity are included: the mode of active sensitization to simple allergenic chemicals; evidence for anamnestic responses; cell types and cell-cell interactions via lymphokines; function of skin and lymphatics, and the role of the carrier in initial sensitization to allergenic chemicals; acquired tolerance; transfer factor. Some prognostications for the future are attempted.

Delayed hypersensitivity was induced in rats by means of sheep erythrocytes and bovine serum albumin-lipid conjugate. Administration of heparin to rats sensitized to either antigen resulted in diminution of the delayed hypersensitivity reaction. Administration of ancrod, however, failed to inhibit the delayed cellular reaction to either antigen. Granuloma formation remained unaffected when rats were injected with either heparin or ancrod. The lack of ancrod effect, in contrast to heparin effect, on delayed hypersensitivity is discussed.
