Feedback from lateral occipital cortex to V1/V2 triggers object completion: Evidence from functional magnetic resonance imaging and dynamic causal modeling.

Illusory figures demonstrate the visual system's ability to integrate disparate parts into coherent wholes. We probed this object integration process by either presenting an integrated diamond shape or a comparable ungrouped configuration that did not render a complete object. Two tasks were used that either required localization of a target dot (relative to the presented configuration) or discrimination of the dot's luminance. The results showed that only when the configuration was task relevant (in the localization task), performance benefited from the presentation of an integrated object. C

Neurofunctional correlates of body-ownership and sense of agency: A meta-analytical account of self-consciousness.

Self-consciousness consists of several dissociable experiences, including the sense of ownership of one's body and the sense of agency over one's action consequences. The relationship between body-ownership and the sense of agency has been described by different neurocognitive models, each providing specific neurofunctional predictions. According to an "additive" model, the sense of agency entails body-ownership, while an alternative "independence" hypothesis suggests that they represent two qualitatively different processes, underpinned by distinct brain systems. We propose a third "interacti

Harmonics added to a flickering light can upset the balance between ON and OFF pathways to produce illusory colors.

The neural signals generated by the light-sensitive photoreceptors in the human eye are substantially processed and recoded in the retina before being transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. A key aspect of this recoding is the splitting of the signals within the two major cone-driven visual pathways into distinct ON and OFF branches that transmit information about increases and decreases in the neural signal around its mean level. While this separation is clearly important physiologically, its effect on perception is unclear. We have developed a model of the ON and OFF pathways in early

Palinopsia induced by topiramate and zonisamide in a patient with migraine.

Palinopsia is an illusory visual phenomenon consisting in the persistence or recurrence of visual images after the exciting stimulus object has been removed. It has been reported in association with parietal and occipital lobe lesions, migraine auras, and related to the use of several drugs and illicit drugs. Here, we report the case of a 23-year-old woman with a 4-year history of episodic migraine with aura who developed palinopsia during sequential prophylactic therapies with topiramate and zonisamide. Although the exact physiopathology of this phenomenon remains unknown, topiramate- and zon

[Phase-locked alpha oscillations evoked by illusory contour perception in normal and autistic preschool boys].

We examined temporal dynamics of EEG phase-locked alpha oscillations during perception of illusory (Kanizsa square) and non-illusory images in boys with autism and age-matched typically developing boys. In typically developing boys the illusory contour (IC) as compared to the control stimulus provoked an increased alpha response at the parietal scalp areas. This IC effect demonstrated continuity within the time window of 133-267 ms after the stimulus onset. Although boys with autism did not display this effect at the group level, part of the sample showed an atypical two-stage pattern of illus

Flicker-light induced visual phenomena: frequency dependence and specificity of whole percepts and percept features.

Flickering light induces visual hallucinations in human observers. Despite a long history of the phenomenon, little is known about the dependence of flicker-induced subjective impressions on the flicker frequency. We investigate this question using Ganzfeld stimulation and an experimental paradigm combining a continuous frequency scan (1-50 Hz) with a focus on re-occurring, whole percepts. On the single-subject level, we find a high degree of frequency stability of percepts. To generalize across subjects, we apply two rating systems, (1) a set of complex percept classes derived from subjects'

Object-based anisotropic mislocalization by retinotopic motion signals.

The relative visual positions of briefly flashed stimuli are systematically modified in the presence of motion signals. We have recently shown that the perceived position of a spatially extended flash stimulus is anisotropically shifted toward a single convergent point back along the trajectory of a moving object without a significant change in the perceived shape of the flash [Watanabe, K., & Yokoi, K. (2006). Object-based anisotropies in the flash-lag effect. Psychological Science, 17, 728-735]. In the previous experiment, the moving stimulus moved in both retinotopic and environmental coord

Perceptual and motor effects of agonist-antagonist muscle vibration in man.

Perceptual and motor effects of vibration applied simultaneously to the distal tendons of the Biceps and Triceps muscles, in isometric conditions and without sight of the stimulated arm, have been studied in human volunteers. Motor effects, measured by surface EMG, are inexistent when the flexor and extensor muscles are simultaneously vibrated at the same frequency. However, EMG activity appears in the muscle being vibrated at the lower frequency when simultaneous vibration is applied at different frequencies. The sensations felt by the subjects were reproduced by the nonvibrated arm and recor

Susceptibility to motion sickness and ego closeness, ego distance as measured by the autokinetic response tendency.

This paper reports results from one phase in an ongoing study of the relationship between vestibular function and various aspects of personality, cognitive style and symptom formation in mental illness. In the experiment reported here a measure of autokinesis was shown to relate to motion sickness experience as judged by actual stimulation in a rotating chair. Low and intermediate sensitive subjects showed less autokinesis than the most motion sick individuals (two-way analysis of variance F = 5.735, P = 0.006). Males in this sample showed a significantly greater autokinetic tendency than fema

Othello syndrome in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review and report of a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Psychosis in Parkinson's disease (PD) is common and consists of hallucinations, illusions, and delusions. Among the latter, delusional jealousy, also named Othello syndrome (OS), might impair the quality of life of both patients and their partners. We aimed to perform a systematic review and report a series of PD patients presenting with OS. METHODS: A systematic review research was performed in PubMed database, excluding non-English articles, single case reports, reviews and neuropathology articles, comments, and articles concerning OS associated with deep brain stimulation (DB…

Emotional false memories in children with learning disabilities.

Research has shown that children with learning disabilities (LD) are less prone to evince associative illusions of memory as a result of impairments in their ability to engage in semantic processing. However, it is unclear whether this observation is true for scripted life events, especially if they include emotional content, or across a broad spectrum of learning disabilities. The present study addressed these issues by assessing recognition memory for script-like information in children with nonverbal learning disability (NLD), children with dyslexia, and typically developing children (N=51)…

Cognitive visual perceptual deficits in patients with delirium.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterised by severe cognitive impairment, but the specific neuropsychological profile of this condition has not yet been clearly delineated. Psychiatric symptoms of perceptual disturbance--such as hallucinations, illusions and misperceptions--are common in delirium, suggesting that patients may have deficits in the cognitive systems underlying visual perception. METHODS: Five neuropsychological tests of visual perception were administered to 17 older patients with delirium, as well as to two control groups comprising 14 patients with Alz…

The reference frame of the flashed-face distortion effect.

The flashed face distortion effect (FFDE) is a visual illusion in which faces presented rapidly in the visual periphery appear grotesquely distorted. Previous studies have suggested that the FFDE may involve higher-level mechanisms of face perception that integrate information across temporally and spatially adjacent stimuli. However, the effect may also arise from lower-level visual processes, such as encoding local edges or orientations. To provide further insight, the present study examined whether the FFDE is represented in retinotopic or spatiotopic coordinates, which are often associated

Microfluidic-enabled stretchable thermoelectric device array for multimodal haptic interfaces.

Stretchable thermoelectric devices hold significant promise for thermal haptic interfaces. However, their development has been constrained by limited cooling capacity arising from inadequate thermal dissipation, restricting operation to low-power conditions. In addition, single stimulus units fail to evoke complex multimodal haptic perceptions. This work introduces a three-dimensional manufacturing strategy with embedded microfluidic architectures, which markedly enhance thermal flux and endow the resulting thermoelectric device array (TEDA) with superior cooling performance surpassing convent

When the Physician Becomes the Patient: Suffering, Surrender, and the Formation of a Catholic Medical Vocation.

This essay examines the theological and vocational implications of a physician's experience of serious illness through the lens of Catholic anthropology and sacramental theology. When a practicing transplant surgeon unexpectedly underwent emergency open heart surgery for acute aortic dissection, the transition from healer to patient precipitated an existential reorientation. Drawing upon St. Augustine's understanding of human dependence upon grace, the Catechism's teaching on divine sustenance, and St. John Paul II's theology of redemptive suffering in Salvifici Doloris, this reflection explor

Beyond the dental clinic: ending the global stagnation in pediatric caries with program science.

Globally, early childhood caries is the most prevalent disease in children, even after a century of development. This demonstrates an "effectiveness illusion" where clinical methods fail to deliver true equity. The reason for this inconsistency arises from "dental exceptionalism", which excludes oral health from the systemic medical care systems. Through this article, we advocate moving from a reactive, tools-focused Clinical Science model to a proactive, population-specific Program Science approach. By utilizing the principle of proportionate universalism, prevention can be integrated into th

The Right Hand Must Know What the Left Hand is Doing: A False-Positive Hotspot on the Sestamibi Scan.

OBJECTIVE: Imaging studies in the setting of primary hyperparathyroidism are performed to rule out an ectopic parathyroid adenoma. Although rare, false-positive scans can cause confusion and possibly more extensive procedures. METHOD: A 68-year-old woman with parathyroid hormone-dependent hypercalcemia was found to have uptake in the left midclavicular area on the parathyroid scan with sestamibi. Retention of the isotope was considered a possibility, and the sestamibi scan was repeated after injecting the isotope in the right hand and this did not show uptake in the left midclavicular area.

Chilaiditi syndrome in a Nepalese girl - A potential mislead!

INTRODUCTION: Chilaiditi's Sign (CS) is a radiological finding on an abdominal radiograph due to colonic interposition between the liver and the diaphragm giving a false impression of free intra peritoneal air. When accompanied by abdominal symptoms, a syndrome with the same name is diagnosed. As elusive a finding, it can be a source of diagnostic misinterpretation causing an alarming illusion of a deceptive emergency. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a four-year-old girl presenting with an acute abdomen in a background of long-standing constipation and an illusory radiograph suggesting left-side

Emerging macrolide resistance in Bordetella pertussis in mainland China: Findings and warning from the global pertussis initiative.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly communicable infectious disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Vaccination once reduced the incidence of the disease, but a global resurgence of the infection happened during the past two decades, likely due to the waning immunity of vaccination. Macrolides such as erythromycin and azithromycin are the drugs of primary choice for treatment. In this personal view, we call for attention to macrolide-resistant B. pertussis (MRBP), which has emerged and prevailed in mainland China for years and are exclusively mediated by mutations in the 23
