Whole-body MR imaging in children: principles, technique, current applications, and future directions.

In whole-body magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, the entire body from the vertex to the toes is imaged in one or more planes with one or multiple sequences to allow evaluation of multisystem diseases in a single examination. Whole-body MR imaging is particularly useful for examining children because it does not involve exposure to radiation and allows a complete work-up for disease staging within a single session of sedation or anesthesia. At whole-body MR imaging with a sliding table platform, a body coil may be used, but the resultant images have a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low resol

Brain tissue segmentation in MR images based on a hybrid of MRF and social algorithms.

Effective abnormality detection and diagnosis in Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs) requires a robust segmentation strategy. Since manual segmentation is a time-consuming task which engages valuable human resources, automatic MRI segmentations received an enormous amount of attention. For this goal, various techniques have been applied. However, Markov Random Field (MRF) based algorithms have produced reasonable results in noisy images compared to other methods. MRF seeks a label field which minimizes an energy function. The traditional minimization method, simulated annealing (SA), uses Monte C

Adjacent-Aware Modality Recovery Based on Incomplete Multi-Modal Brain Disease Diagnosis.

Multi-modal learning is extensively applied to diagnose brain diseases such as epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease. However, incomplete multi-modal data, where some modalities are unavailable or difficult to collect, limits the effectiveness of conventional methods. Additionally, existing approaches often overlook semantic relationships between neighbors with the same-label and latent information in missing modalities. To address these challenges, we propose an adjacent-aware distillation recovery framework designed for incomplete multi-modal learning, with a focus on diagnosing representative br

Fundamental study of a novel image quality index for optimising image quality and dose in digital radiography systems.

INTRODUCTION: The lack of comprehensive image quality index in digital radiography systems is an issue that needs to be addressed. This paper proposes a novel image quality index and reports a fundamental study employing a phantom. This study introduced SNRIQ, which is a novel image quality index developed through a novel analytical algorithm and validated by phantom experiments. METHODS: To validate the performance of the proposed index, i.e., SNRIQ, we conducted a comparative analysis using the conventional image quality index SNRCONV and EI values. Using different subject thicknesses, grid

Deep Self-Reconstruction Fusion Similarity Hashing for the Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease on Multi-Modal Data.

The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is extremely intricate, which makes AD patients almost incurable. Recent studies have demonstrated that analyzing multi-modal data can offer a comprehensive perspective on the different stages of AD progression, which is beneficial for early diagnosis of AD. In this paper, we propose a deep self-reconstruction fusion similarity hashing (DS-FSH) method to effectively capture the AD-related biomarkers from the multi-modal data and leverage them to diagnose AD. Given that most existing methods ignore the topological structure of the data, a deep self-r

Multi-parametric quantitative microvascular imaging with optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy in vivo.

Many diseases involve either the formation of new blood vessels (e.g., tumor angiogenesis) or the damage of existing ones (e.g., diabetic retinopathy) at the microcirculation level. Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM), capable of imaging microvessels in 3D in vivo down to individual capillaries using endogenous contrast, has the potential to reveal microvascular information critical to the diagnosis and staging of microcirculation-related diseases. In this study, we have developed a dedicated microvascular quantification (MQ) algorithm for OR-PAM to automatically quantify mult

Iron-containing nodules of cirrhosis.

In the absence of genetic hemochromatosis and systemic hemosiderosis, patients with cirrhosis can accumulate focal iron within regenerative or dysplastic hepatic nodules, commonly referred to as 'siderotic nodules'. Siderotic dysplastic nodules are premalignant lesions while siderotic regenerative nodules are a marker for severe viral or alcoholic cirrhosis. The relationship of hepatic iron deposition to hepatic cirrhosis and neoplasia has not been fully clarified. This article will review the current literature regarding selective iron accumulation in siderotic nodules in chronic liver diseas

A methodology to study the morphologic changes in lesions during in vitro angioplasty using MRI and image processing.

The assessment of morphologic changes in atherosclerotic lesions during interventional procedures such as transluminal balloon angioplasty is an issue of highest clinical importance. We propose a methodology that allows realistic 3D morphomechanical modeling of the vessel, the plaque and the lumen at different stages of in vitro angioplasty. We elaborate on a novel device designed to guide angioplasty under controlled experimental conditions. The device allows to reproduce in vivo conditions as good as possible, i.e. axial in situ pre-stretch, 100mmHg intraluminal pressure, 37 degrees C Tyrode

Accelerated motion-robust abdominal 3D T1ρ mapping using diamond radial sampling.

PURPOSE: To develop and validate a fast, motion-robust, free-breathing abdominal 3D T1ρ mapping method by combining variable-density diamond radial k-space sampling with fast-MAPSS (magnetization-prepared angle-modulated partitioned-k-space spoiled gradient-echo snapshots). METHODS: 3D MAPSS T1ρ imaging was performed at 3T using five spin-lock time (TSL) pairs in phantom scans and three TSL pairs in nine healthy volunteers. Phantom experiments compared Cartesian sampling (reference) with stack-of-stars and diamond radial sampling. Volunteer scans utilized stack-of-stars and diamond sampling.

High-Resolution Shear Wave Imaging of the Human Cornea Using a Dual-Element Transducer.

Estimating the corneal elasticity can provide valuable information for corneal pathologies and treatments. Ophthalmologic pathologies will invariably cause changes to the elasticity of the cornea. For example, keratoconus and the phototoxic effects of ultraviolet radiation usually increase the corneal elasticity. This makes a quantitative estimation of the elasticity of the human cornea important for ophthalmic diagnoses. The present study investigated the use of a proposed high-resolution shear wave imaging (HR-SWI) method based on a dual-element transducer (comprising an 8-MHz element for pu

MedFusionNet: A hybrid transformer-based multimodal deep learning framework for chronic disease prediction in women's health.

Early detection of women's health conditions such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) remains a major challenge because these diseases often require analysing both visual and textual clinical information. Traditional deep learning systems usually depend upon one single source of input - the medical images or the clinical text which restricts them from understanding the full clinical picture. We propose MedFusionNet, a hybrid Transformer-based deep learning model that combines both medical images and clinical reports for more detailed information. The image p

Bridging Global Attention and Local Hierarchies: A Robust Hybrid Ensemble Framework With Multi-Perspective Explainability for Automated HER2-IHC Scoring.

IntroductionDetermining the HER2 status accurately is a critical determinant in breast cancer treatment planning. Manual scoring remains highly susceptible to inter- and intra-observer variability, particularly in diagnostically ambiguous cases (HER2 1+/2+). Furthermore, contemporary deep learning models frequently lack the robustness and interpretability required for safe clinical integration.MethodsWe propose a hybrid ensemble framework that synergizes EVA-02-Large, Vision Transformer-Base, and ConvNeXt-V2-Nano architectures via an adaptive late-fusion mechanism. The model was trained on the

A Dual-stage Deep Learning Framework for Breast Ultrasound Image Segmentation and Classification.

Deep Learning methods have become a powerful tool in medical imaging, with great potential to improve diagnostic accuracy and support early disease detection. This is especially critical for breast cancer, one of the most common cancers among women, where early detection of abnormal tissue is crucial to improving survival rates. In this paper, we explore the application of Deep Learning techniques to segment and classify breast masses as malignant or benign using ultrasound images, aiming to support breast cancer diagnosis. We propose a modular dual-stage pipeline that first segments suspiciou

Automated Alzheimer's, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Normal Aging Screening using Polar Transformation of Optic Disc and Central Zone of Fundus Images.

Detecting Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is crucial for mitigating the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a leading global cause of death. However, the current gold standard for AD and MCI detection relies on specialized equipment often limited to large testing centers, particularly in low-resource settings like Thailand. Our previous work aimed to create a cost-effective MCI and AD screening method using fundus images but struggled to differentiate between AD and MCI. Henceforth, we developed the proposed methodology, utilizing DenseNet-121 on polar-transformed and zone-selected fundus images

Automatic detection of regions of interest in breast ultrasound images based on local phase information.

Due to the inherent speckling and low contrast of ultrasonic images, the accurate and efficient location of regions of interest (ROIs) is still a challenging task for breast ultrasound (BUS) computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. In this paper, a fully automatic and efficient ROI generation approach is proposed. First, a BUS image is preprocessed to improve image quality. Second, a phase of max-energy orientation (PMO) image of the preprocessed image is calculated. Otsu's threshold selection method is then used to binarize the preprocessed image, the phase image and the composed image obtaine
