Eating styles with some feeling: Latent profiles of appetitive and emotion-related impulsivity traits.

INTRODUCTION: Research focused on adult eating styles would benefit from investigating whether latent profiles of appetitive and emotion-related impulsivity traits differ in eating disorder (ED) and general psychopathology. OBJECTIVE: This study identified and validated latent eating profiles based on appetitive and emotion-related impulsivity traits. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional study in a non-clinical sample of 232 adults who completed an online battery of questionnaires assessing appetitive traits, emotion-related impulsivity, ED symptomatology, anxiety, depression, stress, and

Facets of externalizing psychopathology in relation to inhibitory control and error processing.

A prominent characteristic of externalizing psychopathology is the inability to suppress or modulate behavioral responses and impulses. These tendencies have been associated with cognitive indicators of inhibitory control (P3) and error processing (error-related negativity [ERN] and positivity [Pe]). However, the extent to which these trait-like components are characteristic of specific manifestations, or externalizing proneness more generally, remains unclear. Our study aimed to further contextualize externalizing behaviors by examining associations between distinct facets of externalizing sy

Time-Dependent Effects of Buspirone versus Desipramine on the 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task in Rats Reared in Social Isolation: Implication of Early Life Experience and Motoric Impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Early life social experience and the function of the central serotonin (5-Hydroxytryptophan, 5-HT) system are involved in development of behavioral impulsivity in which individuals act without forethought or before all necessary information is available. However, most of the evidence has been obtained from acute 5-HT manipulation, whereas, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of subchronic regimen targeting of 5-HT1A receptors on motoric waiting impulsivity in socially isolated rats. METHODS: A two-week protocol of buspirone (0.5 mg/kg/day) and desipramine (2.5 mg/kg

Specific features of suicidal behavior in patients with narcissistic personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal behavior is a clinically significant but underestimated cause of mortality in narcissistic personality disorder. Currently, there are no reliable estimates of suicidal behavior for this population. The main objective of this study was to test whether or not suicide attempters diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder are different in terms of impulsivity and expected lethality from suicide attempters with other cluster B personality disorders. METHOD: In a sample of 446 suicide attempters, patients with cluster B personality disorder diagnoses (n = 254) as assessed

Zebrafish models of impulsivity and impulse control disorders.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are characterized by generalized difficulty controlling emotions and behaviors. ICDs are a broad group of the central nervous system (CNS) disorders including conduct disorder, intermittent explosive, oppositional-defiant disorder, antisocial personality disorder, kleptomania, pyromania and other illnesses. Although they all share a common feature (aberrant impulsivity), their pathobiology is complex and poorly understood. There are also currently no ICD-specific therapies to treat these illnesses. Animal models are a valuable tool for studying ICD pathobiology

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) paired with a decision-making task reduces risk-taking in a clinically impulsive sample.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a multidimensional personality trait observed across a variety of psychiatric disorders. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied over dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has shown promise as an intervention to reduce impulsivity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of tDCS paired with a decision-making task on risk-taking in Veterans with a clinical history of impulsive behavior. METHODS: This was a randomized, single-blind, sham-controlled study. Participants performed the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) while concurrently receiving either ac…

Interaction of child and family psychopathology leading to suicidal behavior.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death in adolescence in the United States. Nonfatal forms of suicidal behavior are the most common reasons for the psychiatric hospitalization of adolescents in many countries. The risk for suicide attempt among offspring of suicide completers is multifactorial, challenging experts to develop a strategy that includes assessment and management that consider these factors. Although treatment of depression is necessary, antisuicide treatment strategies that solely target depression may not be suffic

Adolescents' nonmedical use of prescription medications and other problem behaviors.

PURPOSE: This study examines adolescent nonmedical use of prescription medications (NUPM) and its relationship to other problem behaviors. METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted with data gathered from 912 adolescents in 2007. Four mutually exclusive groups were created from the data. Adolescents who: 1) did not use controlled prescription medications (nonusers); 2) used their own controlled medications as prescribed (medical-users); 3) engaged in nonmedical use for self-treatment motivations (self-treaters), and 4) engaged in nonmedical use for sensation-seeking motivations (sensation-s

Impulse control disorder in a patient on long-term treatment with bromocriptine for a macroprolactinoma.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) constitute socially disruptive behaviors such as pathological gambling, impulsive eating, compulsive shopping, and hypersexuality. These conditions are well recognized in patients on dopamine agonist (DA) therapy for Parkinson disease. Dopamine agonists are widely used as first-line agents in the treatment of prolactinomas, but ICDs in this group of patients are relatively rare, perhaps because of lower therapeutic doses used. A review of the literature yielded only a few cases of ICDs in patients on DA treatment for prolactinomas. These symptoms are perhaps un

Oculomotor Control in Preterm Infants: Insights from Eye-Tracking Technology.

Background/Objectives: This study aims to investigate the development of oculomotor behavior in children born preterm using a DIVE device (Device for an Integral Visual Examination) equipped with eye-tracking technology. Visual and visuo-cognitive measures obtained through eye-tracking technology provide quantitative and sensitive indicators of early neural development, as visual function is one of the earliest cerebral processes to develop postnatally. Design: This is a cross-sectional study. Participants: The study included 428 children aged 0.5 to 14 years. Of these, 214 were born preterm (

Exploring the impact of childhood maltreatment and BPD on impulsivity in crimes of passion.

BACKGROUND: Crimes of passion, characterized as unpremeditated impulsive aggression, have garnered increasing attention in recent years. Impulsivity, a major factor in crimes of passion, is also a common feature of various health conditions, including Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Childhood maltreatment is considered a significant precursor to BPD and is closely related to impulsivity. Although prior research has affirmed the relationship between impulsivity, childhood maltreatment, BPD, and criminal behavior, few studies have examined these variables' interconnections within the cont

Comparison of personality traits in pedophiles, abstinent opiate addicts, and healthy controls: considering pedophilia as an addictive behavior.

To investigate the model of pedophilia as a disorder of addictive behavior, pedophiles and chemically addicted individuals were compared on personality traits potentially associated with impaired behavioral inhibition. Twenty-nine pedophiles, 25 opiate addicts (OA's), and 27 healthy controls were administered the Barratt Impulsivity Scale, Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-V for Axis-II. OA's scored higher than either pedophiles or controls on the Barratt. Pedophiles and OA's scored higher than controls on all 3 Psychopathy Checklist-Revised

Successful use of transcranial magnetic stimulation in difficult to treat hypersexual disorder.

Hypersexual disorder has phenomenological resemblance with impulsive-compulsive spectrum disorders. Inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the supplementary motor area (SMA) has been found to be effective in the management of impulsive-compulsive behaviors. Inhibitory rTMS over SMA may be helpful in hypersexual disorder. We highlight here a case of hypersexual disorder (excessive sexual drive) who failed to respond adequately to the conventional pharmacological treatment and responded with rTMS augmentation.

Core Symptoms Between Adolescent Psychological Abuse-Neglect and Impulsiveness: A Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Psychological abuse and neglect are considered fundamental to the development of impulsiveness. However, the interplay between psychological abuse-neglect symptoms and impulsiveness dimensions remains unclear, especially during adolescence, a critical developmental stage. This study uses network analysis to explore the link between adolescent psychological abuse-neglect and impulsivity, aiming to inform targeted early interventions and treatment strategies for impulsive behaviors. METHODS: Cluster sampling was used to gather demographic data from 6731 students across 17 middle sch…

Impulse control symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease: The influence of dopaminergic agonist.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders and punding are common in Parkinson's disease patients. Cross-sectional studies suggest an association between dopamine replacement therapy, especially dopaminergic agonists, and impulse control and related disorders in Parkinson's disease. However, some surveys suggest that Parkinson's disease itself does not confer an altered risk for impulse control disorders and related behavior, although these disturbances are more frequently reported in Parkinsonian patients than in healthy controls. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the frequency of impulse control disorders

Impulsive Action and Impulsive Choice Are Differentially Expressed in Rats Depending on the Age at Exposure to a Gambling Task.

Impulsivity is considered an important feature associated with the development of numerous psychiatric disorders, including addictions. In the behavioral approach, impulsivity can be broadly divided into two distinct subtypes: impulsive action and choice. In the present study, we used a rodent version of the gambling task (rGT) to examine how impulsive action and impulsive choice are differentially influenced by difference in age at exposure (i.e., late adolescents/young adults vs. mature adults) to rGT. Rats were trained in a touch-screen chamber to learn the relationships between 4 light sig

Yohimbine increases impulsivity through activation of cAMP response element binding in the orbitofrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Stress can increase impulsivity and has a negative impact on psychiatric outcome. Norepinephrine is heavily implicated in responses to stress, and the alpha(2) antagonist yohimbine is used clinically to study this aspect of the stress response. Yohimbine induces mild anxiety and increases impulsivity in healthy volunteers but has more detrimental effects in some psychiatric populations, triggering mania in bipolar patients and drug craving in substance-dependent individuals. Understanding the mechanism by which yohimbine affects brain function could provide insight into the heighte
