Effects of Spectral Interfering Substances on Light Transmission Platelet Aggregation Using Infrared Based Aggregometer.

AIM: This study aims to investigate the nature and extent of hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic (HIL) interference on platelet aggregation (PA) using the TA-8 V aggregometer (Diagnostica Stago, Asnière sur Seine) equipped with a near infrared light source outside the typical absorbance range of HIL. METHODS: Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) samples were spiked with substances mimicking HIL interference: red blood cell hemolysate (RBCH; 0.3-20 g/L of hemoglobin), bilirubin (15-400 mg/L), and a fat emulsion (Intralipid 20%: 0.5-3 g/L). Maximal intensity (MaxInt) and velocity (Vel) were recorded in the ba

Usefulness of digital infrared thermography video using FLIR T560 in detecting hypothermia associated with complex regional pain syndrome type I: A CARE-compliant case report.

RATIONALE: Because the diagnosis of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) majorly relies on patients' subjective clinical complaints, CRPS can be overdiagnosed, underdiagnosed, or missed entirely in clinical practice. CRPS is related to dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, which causes temperature changes in patients' skin. This case report evaluates the effectiveness of the FLIR T560 portable thermal imaging camera in detecting hypothermia associated with CRPS type I, potentially enhancing diagnostic accuracy. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a 25-year-old female with pain and limited pa

Assessment of alternative metrics in the application of infrared thermography to detect muscle damage in sports.

Objective. The association between muscle damage and skin temperature is controversial. We hypothesize that including metrics that are more sensitive to individual responses by considering variability and regions representative of higher temperature could influence skin temperature outcomes. Here, the objective of the study was to determine whether using alternative metrics (TMAX, entropy, and pixelgraphy) leads to different results than mean, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation (SD) skin temperature when addressing muscle damage using infrared thermography.Approach.Thermal images from fou

Scalable Drug-Mimicking Nanoplasmonic Therapy for Bradyarrhythmia in Cardiomyocytes.

Bradyarrhythmia poses a serious threat to human health, with chronic progression causing heart failure and acute onset leading to sudden death. In this study, we develop a scalable drug-mimicking nanoplasmonic therapeutic strategy by introducing gold nanorod (Au NR) mediated near-infrared (NIR) photothermal effects. An integrated sensing and regulation platform is established for in situ synchronized NIR laser regulation and electrophysiological property recording. The Au NR plasmonic regulation enables the restoration of normal cardiomyocyte rhythm from the bradyarrhythmia. By regulating the

Probing Deep Hydrogen Polysulfides Fluctuations In Vivo by Engineering Activatable Fluorescence Reporters with Second Near-Infrared Window Emission.

Deep and comprehensive understanding of the intricate biochemical processes mediated by H2Sn (n ≥ 1), but not H2S, is of paramount importance. A few fluorescent probes have been developed with the intention of addressing this issue. However, there is currently no evidence of any activatable NIR-II fluorescent probes for H2Sn-specific imaging over H2S. In this study, we developed the inaugural H2Sn-activated NIR-II probe for specific and deep imaging of H2Sn through a series of molecular engineering strategies. Strong electron-absorbing moieties enabled the redshift of the emission of the desig

Multiplexed Shortwave Infrared Imaging Highlights Anatomical Structures in Mice.

Multiplexed fluorescence in vivo imaging remains challenging due to the attenuation and scattering of visible and traditional near infrared (NIR-I, 650-950 nm) wavelengths. Fluorescence imaging using shortwave infrared (SWIR, 1000-1700 nm, a.k.a. NIR-II) light enables deeper tissue penetration due to reduced tissue scattering as well as minimal background autofluorescence. SWIR-emitting semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with tunable emission peaks and optical stability are powerful contrast agents, yet few imaging demonstrations exclusively use SWIR emission beyond two-color imaging schemes. Dielectrics and possible ferroelectricity in diol/glycerol covalently grafted kaolinites.

Kaolinite possesses a structure with asymmetrically layered 1 : 1 dioctahedral aluminum silicate, and this structural property provides a useful platform for creating new cost-efficient functional materials that require noncentrosymmetric crystal packing. In this study, we prepared three covalently grafted kaolinites of propanediol (PD)/butanediol (BD)/glycerol (GL) by forming Al-O-C bonds between the OH groups of PD/BD/GL and the surface of kaolinite (K). Three covalently grafted kaolinites (K-PD, K-BD and K-GL) were characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric

Picosecond Infrared Laser Mass Spectrometry Identifies a Metabolite Array for 10 s Diagnosis of Select Skin Cancer Types: A Proof-of-Concept Feasibility Study.

Currently, a large number of skin biopsies are taken for each true skin cancer case detected, creating a need for a rapid, high sensitivity, and specificity skin cancer detection tool to reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies taken from benign tissue. Picosecond infrared laser mass spectrometry (PIRL-MS) using a hand-held sampling probe is reported to detect and classify melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and normal skin with average sensitivity and specificity values of 86-95% and 91-98%, respectively (at a 95% confidence level) solely requiring 10 s or less of total data collection and an

Micro-spectroscopic study of late 19th-early 20th century tube paints.

Many issues in the conservation of paintings from the early modern period are still unresolved due to lack of information on paints from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in particular their production, formulations, and later degradation processes. The inconsistency of the names that paint manufacturers chose for their products furthermore compounds the challenges faced by conservators and chemists wishing to study them. This paper addresses a number of these issues through investigations of commercial tube oil paints from a paint box owned by the Norwegian painter Harriet Backer (1845-

Oxygen-Generating Cyanobacteria Powered by Upconversion-Nanoparticles-Converted Near-Infrared Light for Ischemic Stroke Treatment.

Stroke is one of most common causes of death and disability. Most of neuroprotective agents fail to rescue neurons from cerebral ischemic insults, mainly because of targeting downstream cascading events, such as excitotoxicity, oxidative and nitrosative stress, and inflammation, rather than improving hypoxia that initially occurs. Here, we report a near-infrared light (NIR)-driven nanophotosynthesis biosystem capable of generating oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide, thus rescuing neurons from ischemia toward treating stroke. Through cerebral delivery of S. elongatus that spontaneously photosy

The Association Between Heat Waves and Other Meteorological Parameters and Snakebites: Israel National Study.

BACKGROUND: Published annual estimates report a global burden of 2.5 million snakebite cases and >100,000 deaths. In Israel, envenomations are the third most frequent cause of poisonings that are of moderate to major clinical severity. Most studies focus on the clinical descriptions of snakebites in tropical climates, and we sought to investigate the association between snakebite frequency and meteorological parameters. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the seasonality of snakebites and evaluate the association between increasingly common heat waves and other meteorological parameters and s

Endocrine-specific NIR fluorophores for adrenal gland targeting.

The adrenal glands (AGs) are relatively small yet require definitive identification during their resection, or more commonly their avoidance. To enable image-guided surgery involving the AGs, we have developed novel near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores that target the AGs after a single intravenous injection, which provided dual-NIR image-guided resection or avoidance of the AGs during both open and minimally-invasive surgery.

Response of Two Mytilids to a Heatwave: The Complex Interplay of Physiology, Behaviour and Ecological Interactions.

Different combinations of behavioural and physiological responses may play a crucial role in the ecological success of species, notably in the context of biological invasions. The invasive mussel Xenostrobus securis has successfully colonised the inner part of the Galician Rias Baixas (NW Spain), where it co-occurs with the commercially-important mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. This study investigated the effect of a heatwave on the physiological and behavioural responses in monospecific or mixed aggregations of these species. In a mesocosm experiment, mussels were exposed to simulated tidal

Infrared Laser Heating Applied to Nanopore Sensing for DNA Duplex Analysis.

Temperature studies coupled with resistive-pulse nanopore sensing enable the quantification of a variety of important thermodynamic properties at the single-molecule limit. Previous demonstrations of nanopore sensing with temperature control have utilized bulk chamber heating methodologies. This approach makes it difficult to rapidly change temperatures and enable optical access for other analytical techniques (i.e., single-molecule fluorescence). To address these issues, researchers have explored laser-based methodologies through either direct infrared (IR) absorption or plasmonic assisted he

Picosecond infrared laser-induced all-atom nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation of dissociation of viruses.

Since the discovery of the plant pathogen tobacco mosaic virus as the first viral entity in the late 1800s, viruses traditionally have been mainly thought of as pathogens for disease-resistances. However, viruses have recently been exploited as nanoplatforms with applications in biomedicine and materials science. To this aim, a large majority of current methods and tools have been developed to improve the physical stability of viral particles, which may be critical to the extreme physical or chemical conditions that viruses may encounter during purification, fabrication processes, storage and

1D polymeric platinum cyanoximate: a strategy toward luminescence in the near-infrared region beyond 1000 nm.

We report the synthesis and properties of the first representative of a new class of PtL2 complexes with ambidentate mixed-donor cyanoxime ligands [L = 2-cyano-2-oximino-N,N'-diethylaminoacetamide, DECO (1)]. Three differently colored polymorphs of "Pt(DECO)2" (3-5) were isolated, with the first two being crystallographically characterized. The dark-green complex [Pt(DECO)2]n (5) spontaneously forms in aqueous solution via aggregation of yellow monomeric complex 3 into the red dimer [Pt(DECO)2]2 (4), followed by further oligomerization into coordination polymer 5. Detection of UV-induced cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers by near-infrared spectroscopy and aquaphotomics.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes cellular DNA damage, among which cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) are responsible for a variety of genetic mutations. Although several approaches have been developed for detection of CPDs, conventional methods require time-consuming steps. Aquaphotomics, a new approach based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and multivariate analysis that determines interactions between water and other components of the solution, has become an effective method for qualitative and quantitative parameters measurement in the solutions. NIR spectral patterns of UVC-irradiat

Characterization by combined optical and FT infrared spectra of 3d-transition metal ions doped-bismuth silicate glasses and effects of gamma irradiation.

Optical and infrared absorption spectral measurements were carried out for binary bismuth silicate glass and other derived prepared samples with the same composition and containing additional 0.2% of one of 3d transition metal oxides. The same combined spectroscopic properties were also measured after subjecting the prepared glasses to a gamma dose of 8 Mrad. The experimental optical spectra reveal strong UV-near visible absorption bands from the base and extended to all TMs-doped samples and these specific extended and strong UV-near visible absorption bands are related to the contributions o
