Multiple foregut atresias are exceedingly rare. We present a unique case of combined pyloric and duodenal atresia in a premature neonate. The anomaly appeared to evolve into a closed loop foregut obstruction in the postnatal period. Foregut continuity was established with a gastroduodenostomy, duodenoduodenostomy, and duodenal tapering. The child survived and continued to thrive at 2 years of age.

We present 5 cases of pyloric atresia associated with junctional epidermolysis bullosa, from 2003 to 2005. Patients underwent laparatomy after stabilization. Four neonates had gastroduodenostomy, and the other had excision of membrane and pyloroplasty. Four survived and one died from fulminant septicemia. Although the association of pyloric atresia with epidermolysis bullosa has been reported to be fatal, our study showed good survival rate.

An analysis of findings of clinical and ++roentgenological examinations of 55 patients with ectopy of the anal canal prior to operation and 68 patients after correction of the defect has shown that secondary megacolon developed in proportion with the age and degree of the outlet opening stenosis and there appeared injuries of elements of the normally formed anal canal. The authors described their original many-steps operation of the formation of the anus which allows all elements of retaining feces to be preserved. The amount of good long-term results increased from 22-26% up to 75% as compare

Nineteen infants with intrinsic duodenal obstruction are analyzed. Atresia was the most common lesion. An exceptionally high rate of associated anomalies (73.7%) were present; Down's syndrome, the single most common anomaly, was seen in 47% of the infants. In seven infants, the diagnosis was delayed and in another three it was made intraoperatively while establishing a gastrostomy for esophageal atresia. Three infants died without operation because of gross prematurity and multiple anomalies. Of the 16 operated on, three died, one due to peritonitis and the other two because of metabolic deran

Among a great number of chromosomal aberrations, the absence of cerebral malformations does not explain the reason for mental retardation and will lead to interpreting as normal the echography of a fetus which, after birth, will be revealed to have a trisomy. Trisomic brain anomalies are not constant or obligatory, but some of them (holoprosencephaly for 61% of trisomy-13 and agenesis of corpus callosum for 8% of trisomy-18) have a degree of specificity. As for cerebral and cerebellar heterotopias, they cannot be considered as real malformations as they are frequently found in premature newbor

Case report of prenatal sonographic diagnosis of obstruction of the upper gastrointestinal tract (atresia of jejunum). The typical echographic findings and the significance of the hydramnion which is regularly concomitant with this rather rare condition, are discussed. Prenatal diagnosis of a small-bowel tract atresia allows optimal neonatal management improving the prognosis.

Intraintestinal meconium calcification in the fetus and newborn is a rare finding, occurring in patients with intestinal obstruction. The intraluminal location of the enterolithiasis enables differentiation from calcifications that are secondary to bowel perforation and meconium peritonitis. We report on a term male neonate with VACTERL (vertebral defects, imperforate anus, cardiac anomalies, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies, limb anomalies) association and rectourethral fistula, in whom enterolithiasis was documented by prenatal ultrasound imaging at 21 weeks' gestation. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: This study aims to analyze the incidence and type of various associated anomalies among infants with extrahepatic biliary atresia (EHBA), compare their frequency with those quoted in the existing literature and assess their role in the overall management.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 137 infants who underwent the Kasai procedure for EHBA during the past 12 years. The medical records were reviewed for the incidence and type of associated anomalies in addition to the details of the management of the EHBA.
RESULTS: Of the137 infants, 40 (29.2

The diseases of the esophagus include congenital defects like atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula as well as others such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett's esophagus, carcinoma and strictures. All esophageal disorders require surgical intervention and reconstruction with appropriate substitutes. Primary anastomosis is used to treat most cases but treatment of long gap atresia still remains a clinical challenge. Autologous graft therapies using tissues from colon, and small and large intestine or gastric transplantations have been attempted but have constraints like leakage, i

UNLABELLED: Esophageal replacement is a surgical procedure rarely indicated in children. It is used in esophageal atresia type I and long-gap atresia when anastomosis is not possible, corrosive strictures and other unusual causes. Type and location of the graft depend on etiology and surgeon preferences. We analyse our results of a large series of esophageal replacement.
METHODS: . We reviewed esophageal replacements carried out in our department between January-1992 and December-2004. We report 29 patients (15 girls and 14 boys) with ages ranging from 2 months until 14 years old (median 24 m

BACKGROUND: Clinical experiences of adults who underwent surgery for esophageal atresia at birth is limited. There is some evidence that suggests considerable long-term morbidity, partly because of dysphagia, which has been reported in up to 85% of adult patients who undergo surgery for esophageal atresia. The authors hypothesized that dysphagia in this population is caused by dysmotility and⁄or anatomical anomalies.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the motor and anatomical causes of dysphagia.
METHODS: A total of 41 adults, followed at the Esophageal Atresia Clinic at Hôpital Saint-Luc (Montreal, Qu

Background Anatomical abnormalities leading to bowel movement failure are the major cause of intestinal obstruction. This study was done to assess the diagnostic efficacy of contrast enema in neonates with lower intestinal obstruction. Methodology This prospective study was conducted in The Children's Hospital and University of Child Health Sciences, Lahore from February 2021 to July 2021. Patients presenting with constipation, abdominal distension, vomiting, and unable to pass meconium, evaluated clinically and by X-rays, were included in the study. Patients with lower intestinal obstruction

The preliminary experience of the first Italian program of pediatric intestinal transplantation is presented herein. A multidisciplinary group with broad experience in pediatric solid organ transplantation started the program. Nine children with complications of chronic intestinal failure were listed for transplantation. One child died on the waiting list; one received an isolated liver transplantation; three isolated intestinal; three multivisceral; and one, a combined liver/intestine transplantation. There was no in-hospital mortality, and all children were weaned from parenteral nutrition.

METHODS: Ret … meconium ileus with cystic fibrosis (CF) in 9, meconium plug syndrome in 19 (including 3 with CF), intestinal atresia in 10 and no formal diagnosis in 17. Median length of neonatal unit stay was 11 days (7-19).
CONCLUSIONS: Initial management of neonates with distal bowel obstruction should be colonic irrigation since this is therapeutic in the majority and signif …
