Large intestine as content of congenital inguinal hernia: A case report of intestinal obstruction.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hernias containing appendix, caecum and transverse colon are uncommon in contrast with usual inguinal hernias containing small intestine. The patient usually presents with inguinoscrotal swelling. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 2 months old male child presented with inguinoscrotal swelling, vomiting with abdominal distention. On Ultrasonography (USG) of the scrotum, protrusion of the abdominal cavity contents through the right inguinal canal into the scrotum of approximately 3.4 cm × 0.7 cm was found which indicates right inguinal hernia. On the opening

Acute cytomegalovirus infection modulates the intestinal microbiota and targets intestinal epithelial cells.

Primary and recurrent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections frequently cause CMV colitis in immunocompromised as well as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Additionally, colitis occasionally occurs upon primary CMV infection in patients who are apparently immunocompetent. In both cases, the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms are largely elusive - in part due to the lack of adequate access to specimens. We employed the mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV) model to assess the association between CMV and colitis. During acute primary MCMV infection of immunocompetent mice, the gut microbial compos

Maternal Antibiotic Treatment Disrupts the Intestinal Microbiota and Intestinal Development in Neonatal Mice.

Maternal antibiotic treatment (MAT) during prenatal and intrapartum periods alters the bacterial composition and diversity of the intestinal microbiota of the offspring. The effect of MAT during pregnancy on the intestinal microbiota and its relationship with intestinal development remain unknown. This study investigated the effects of MAT during pregnancy on intestinal microbiota, injury and inflammation, vascularization, cellular proliferation, and the intestinal barrier in neonatal mice. At timed intervals, we fed pregnant C57BL/6N mice sterile drinking water containing antibiotics (ampicil

Pulmonary intestinal adenocarcinoma secondary to intestinal metaplasia of bladder: a rare case report.

Intestinal metaplasia (IM) in the esophagus is considered as a risk factor of subsequent intestinal-type adenocarcinoma based on the classical theory of metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma. IM rarely occurs in urinary tract and fewer studies have been reported with long-term follow-up in those patients with IM of bladder. Thus, the etiology, pathological characteristics and prognosis of IM of urinary tract remain unclear. In the past, IM was regarded as benign lesions in bladder and there might have no relationship between IM of bladder and potential malignancy. Recently, some studies suggested tha

Nanovaccines Mediated Subcutis-to-Intestine Cascade for Improved Protection against Intestinal Infections.

Parenteral vaccines typically can prime systemic humoral immune response, but with limited effects on cellular and mucosal immunity. Here, a subcutis-to-intestine cascade for navigating nanovaccines to address this limitation is proposed. This five-step cascade includes lymph nodes targeting, uptaken by dendritic cells (DCs), cross-presentation of antigens, increasing CCR9 expression on DCs, and driving CD103+ DCs to mesenteric lymph nodes, in short, the LUCID cascade. Specifically, mesoporous silica nanoparticles are encapsulated with antigen and adjuvant toll-like receptor 9 agonist cytosine

A novel segmental absence of intestinal musculature with small intestinal stenosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Segmental absence of intestinal musculature (SAIM) is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction and perforation due to partial or complete defects in the intestinal muscularis propria in neonates and is occasionally observed in adulthood. CASE PRESENTATION: The first case of small intestinal stenosis derived from SAIM, which was difficult to differentiate from Crohn's disease (CD), is reported. A 4-year-old girl presented with abdominal pain, anemia, and a positive fecal occult blood test. She was initially diagnosed with CD and started on treatment. Because her gastrointestinal symp

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in children with intestinal failure on home parenteral nutrition.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Children with intestinal failure (IF) have abnormal intestinal anatomy, secretion, or motility, which impairs homeostatic mechanisms and can lead to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). We sought to describe clinical features at the time of clinically suspected SIBO by experienced clinicians in children with IF on home parenteral nutrition (PN), review specific challenges of diagnostic testing in this population, and describe potential new diagnostic surrogate markers. METHODS: A descriptive single-center retrospective chart review was performed during all episode

Intestinal failure associated cholestasis in surgical necrotizing enterocolitis and spontaneous intestinal perforation.

BACKGROUND: Surgery for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and spontaneous intestinal perforation (SIP) is often complicated by intestinal failure (IF) and intestinal failure associated cholestasis (IFAC). OBJECTIVE: Assessment of incidence, predictors, and mortality associated with IFAC in surgically treated NEC and SIP. METHODS: A retrospective observational study based on hospital records during 1986-2014 in the two largest Finnish neonatal intensive care units was performed. IFAC was defined as conjugated bilirubin >34 μmol/l (2.0 mg/dl) for ≥ two postoperative weeks while receiving parente

Osteoporosis in patients with intestinal insufficiency and intestinal failure: Prevalence and clinical risk factors.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Intestinal insufficiency and intestinal failure are associated with malabsorption of micro- and macronutrients that may negatively influence bone metabolism and increase the risk for developing osteoporosis. However, information regarding prevalence and contribution of individual risk factors is scarce. We investigated the prevalence of osteoporosis in patients with intestinal insufficiency and intestinal failure and identified associated risk factors. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study including 167 clinically stable outpatients with intestinal insuffi

Intestinal Rehabilitation Programs in the Management of Pediatric Intestinal Failure and Short Bowel Syndrome.

Intestinal failure is a rare, debilitating condition that presents both acute and chronic medical management challenges. The condition is incompatible with life in the absence of the safe application of specialized and individualized medical therapy that includes surgery, medical equipment, nutritional products, and standard nursing care. Intestinal rehabilitation programs are best suited to provide such complex care with the goal of achieving enteral autonomy and oral feeding with or without intestinal transplantation. These programs almost all include pediatric surgeons, pediatric gastroente

A meta-analysis of clinical outcome of intestinal transplantation in patients with total intestinal aganglionosis.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Total intestinal aganglionosis (TIA) occurs in less than 1% of patients with Hirschsprung disease (HD), and TIA is the most severe form of HD. Survival has improved with the advent of parenteral nutrition and intestinal transplantation (ITx). The field of ITx has rapidly progressed in the last two decades and has now become an established treatment for patients with intestinal failure. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to determine the clinical outcome of ITx in patients with TIA. METHODS: A systematic literature search for relevant articles was performed in four databas

Effect of taurine on intestinal recovery following intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rat.

PURPOSE: Taurine (TAU) is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is involved in a diverse array of biological and physiological functions, including bile salt conjugation, osmoregulation, membrane stabilization, calcium modulation, anti-oxidation, and immunomodulation. Several studies have established that treatment with TAU significantly protects cerebral, cardiac and testicular injury from ischemia-reperfusion (IR). The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of TAU on intestinal recovery and enterocyte turnover after intestinal IR injury in rats. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley ra

Liver-intestine-cadherin is a sensitive marker of intestinal differentiation during Barrett's carcinogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Histopathologic differentiation between the stages of Barrett's carcinogenesis is often challenging. Liver-intestine (LI)-cadherin, an intestine-specific marker, is involved in intestinal metaplasia development in gastric and colon cancers and could be of value in diagnosis and differentiation. AIMS: To examine the expression of LI-cadherin in the sequence of Barrett's carcinogenesis and to evaluate its association with clinicopathological data. METHODS: LI-cadherin expression was immunohistologically investigated, by use of anti-CDH17 antibody, in gastric mucosa (GM) biopsies ta

Intestinal disaccharidase activity in patients with autism: effect of age, gender, and intestinal inflammation.

Intestinal disaccharidase activities were measured in 199 individuals with autism to determine the frequency of enzyme deficiency. All patients had duodenal biopsies that were evaluated morphologically and assayed for lactase, sucrase, and maltase activity. Frequency of lactase deficiency was 58% in autistic children ≤ 5 years old and 65% in older patients. As would be expected, patients with autism at age 5 > years demonstrated significant decline in lactase activity (24%, p = .02) in comparison with ≤ 5 years old autistic patients. Boys ≤ 5 years old with autism had 1.7 fold lower lactase ac

Foreign body-associated intestinal pyogranuloma resulting in intestinal obstruction in four dogs.

Intestinal obstruction resulting from an intramural foreign body-associated pyogranuloma was diagnosed in four dogs. Vomiting and weight loss were the main clinical signs. On physical examination, a mass in the abdomen was detected in three dogs. Abdominal radiography demonstrated the presence of soft tissue opacity in three of the dogs and gas-filled dilated intestinal loops in all four dogs. Abdominal ultrasonography showed hyperkinetic fluid-filled dilated intestinal loops and a hypoechoic small intestinal mass in all the dogs. Exploratory coeliotomy confirmed the presence of a jejunal mass

Homeostatic proliferation of intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes precedes their migration to extra-intestinal sites.

Cells with the phenotype of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) are present systemically and have been implicated in immune regulation. To determine whether IEL undergo homeostatic proliferation and migrate from the small intestine, we analysed the fate of congenic IEL transferred into lymphopenic mice. Donor IEL homed to the small intestinal epithelium, where they expanded in an IL-15-dependent manner and expressed CD69, CD44 and CD103; proliferation did not occur in the spleen, the main other site of IEL detection early after transfer. By 12 days after transfer, a small proportion of intestina

CDX2 co-localizes with liver-intestine cadherin in intestinal metaplasia and adenocarcinoma of the stomach.

CDX2 and liver-intestine (LI)-cadherin are intestine-specific markers and both are physiologically expressed in the small intestine and colon. Recent studies have demonstrated that CDX2 regulates LI-cadherin gene (CDH17) expression in colorectal cancer. The present study investigated the relationship of CDX2 and LI-cadherin expression in gastric cancer. One hundred and nine pairs of tumour and non-cancerous gastric mucosa were collected from gastrectomy specimens. Protein expression levels of CDX2 and LI-cadherin were determined by immunohistochemical staining. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR showed
