Percutaneous radiologic interventions are an integral part of the treatment of biliary disorders. The indications and results of percutaneously placed metallic endoprostheses in malignant obstructive jaundice, percutaneous balloon cholangioplasty, percutaneous extraction of bile duct stones, and percutaneous cholecystostomy for acute acalculous and calculous cholecystitis are summarized.

We present the case of a female patient with tuberculosis of the gallbladder, the adipose tissue and lymph nodes surrounding the common bile duct; the patient presented with obstructive jaundice. We discuss the diagnostic criteria, approach to the biliary tract and treatment of this type of patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of minimally invasive technologies of lithotripsy and hydraulic antegrade lithoextraction in complex treatment of choledocholithiasis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the main group, 74 patients with choledocholithiasis underwent complex treatment with minimally invasive lithotripsy and hydraulic antegrade lithoextraction. An 85-year-old woman with jaundice was referred to our hospital where she was diagnosed with obstructive jaundice due to carcinoma of the pancreatic head based on blood tests and abdominal computed tomography (CT). We performed endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for biliary drainage, but 5 days after the procedure, she complained of epigastric pain. Percutaneous gallbladder drainage (PGD) was performed in 78 patients with diseases of the bile duct system and pancreas, including 48 patients with acute cholecystitis. We report a patient with biliary obstruction of two years evolution. Blood chemistry evaluation was compatible with obstructive jaundice. Endoscopy and CT were suggestive of ampullary tumor. At laparotomy, the biopsy specimen was diagnosed as carcinoid tumor, and was treated by a Whipple's procedure.

Different mechanisms responsible for the appearance of jaundice in leptospirosis caused by Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae in guinea pigs were discussed. Hepatocellular damage was demonstrated with the presence to a lesser extent of intrahepatic biliary obstruction. A massive destruction of extravascular red blood cells liberated by the hemorrhagic diathesis, appeared to be the main cause in the genesis of jaundice. The latter was inhibited following the neutralization of the reticuloendothelial system of guinea pigs by an irradiation before the infection.

We encountered a very rare case of biliopancreatic fistula with portal vein thrombosis caused by pancreatic pseudocyst. A 57-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of abdominal pain, obstructive jaundice, and portal vein thrombosis due to acute pancreatitis. Three infants with anterior abdominal wall defects (gastroschisis and exomphalos) who presented with obstructive jaundice secondary to biliary obstruction, are described. All three infants had abnormal biliary systems, with mechanical distortion of the biliary tree. Biliary obstruction secondary to structural biliary anomalies should be considered in patients with abdominal wall defects and cholestasis, as prolonged unrelieved biliary obstruction may lead to biliary cirrhosis and portal hypertension.

The treatment of symptomatic echinococcal disease of the liver during pregnancy is a rare, but difficult problem.
