The I1307K mutation of the adenopolyposis coli gene (APC), located on chromosome 5q21-q22, is associated with an increased risk of cancer in Ashkenazi Jews. In the present study, we analyzed age and body mass of Ashkenazi Jewish prostate cancer patients, with and without the APC I1307K mutation. Participants in our study were found through urology and radiation oncology clinics, and all eligible patients were asked to take part. A familial history was obtained by interview or self-report questionnaire. Histological confirmation of diagnosis was obtained for all subjects. The I1307K allele of t…

Gaucher disease is the most frequent lysosomal storage disease and the most prevalent genetic disease among the Ashkenazi Jews (q approximately 0.047). The disease results from inherited defects of acid beta-glucosidase and the accumulation of the substrate, glucosylceramide, in cells of monocyte/macrophage origin. The therapeutic response to macrophage-targeted (alpha-mannosyl-terminated) alglucerase (Ceredase, at 60 to 15 IU/kg every 2 weeks) was analyzed in 33 patients (age range, 2 to 63 years; 15 splenectomized) with extensive Gaucher disease over periods of 6 to 24 months. The efficacy o…

Since October 7, 2023, protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict have occurred at colleges and universities across the United States. At some institutions these demonstrations have prompted civil rights investigations, interruptions to research funding, and/or revisions to campus speech policies. Government and university leaders have often cited concerns about Jewish students' well-being as the impetus for these interventions. However, it is unclear to what extent these events, and the broader campus atmosphere around Judaism and Israel, have affected the well-being of Jewish students. Th

BACKGROUND: While discrimination takes multiple forms, racial or ethnic discrimination is a root cause of this health-damaging social phenomenon. We drew on intersectionality theory, which offers an account of discrimination's multiple effects, to consider associations between women's experiences of discrimination and postpartum depression (PPD) using four measures: single forms of discrimination (SFD); multiple forms of discrimination (MFD); ethnic discrimination combined with MFD (E-MFD); and a composite MFD that interacted with women's identity (C-MFD).
METHODS: We interviewed a stratified

BACKGROUND: Reports of longevity in Holocaust survivors (HS) conflict with excess prevalence of chronic diseases described among them. However, data on their long-term risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are limited. Clinical data on large representative groups of HS who were exposed to severe persecution are also limited.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of CVD and the risk factors in a large cohort of elderly HS compared to elderly individuals who were not exposed to the Holocaust (NHS).
METHODS: CVD prevalence rates and risk factors data from the computerized system of the centra

Evaluation of sources not previously considered makes it possible to describe Friedrich Meggendorfer's role as a National Socialist university psychiatrist. Relevant archive material and literature were both assessed. The gene-hygiene affinity promulgated by Meggendorfer was based on his own scientific interests, early academic influences, and also positive reinforcement from his career choices. His application of scientific knowledge in the legitimization of National Socialist jurisdiction reflects a dark facet in Meggendorfer's life. One can also criticize his ethics in failing to use his eu

PURPOSE: The Center for Jewish Genetics provides genetic education and carrier screening to individuals of Jewish descent. Carrier screening has traditionally been performed by targeted mutation analysis for founder mutations with an enzyme assay for Tay-Sachs carrier detection. The development of next-generation sequencing (NGS) allows for higher detection rates regardless of ethnicity. Here, we explore differences in carrier detection rates between genotyping and NGS in a primarily Jewish population.
METHODS: Peripheral blood samples or saliva samples were obtained from 506 individuals. All

UNLABELLED: Ultra-orthodox Jewish lifestyle, which encourages modest dress and indoor scholarly activity, represents a risk factor for vitamin-D deficiency. Our study in healthy young males from higher education religious institutions located in the same geographical area showed frequent and severe vitamin D deficiency, strongly correlated with the degree of sun exposure. However, PTH level was usually normal.
INTRODUCTION: Ultra-orthodox Jewish lifestyle encourages modest dress and indoor scholarly activity. As such, it represents a risk factor for vitamin-D deficiency, a worldwide problem p

A screening programme for Tay Sachs disease (TSD) carrier status was introduced in high schools in Victoria, Australia in 1997, and was expanded to screen for six other genetic conditions common in the Ashkenazi Jewish population in 2008. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current programme and compare it with an evaluation of the programme when screening was offered for TSD alone. All students from Jewish high schools in Melbourne who offered the programme in 2009 were invited to participate in the study. A purpose-designed questionnaire explored the following domains: knowledge (disea

PURPOSE: Male breast cancer has been linked extensively to mutations of BRCA2 and, to a lesser extent, BRCA1. The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive analysis of point mutations and genomic rearrangements in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes in 41 men with breast cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Deleterious point mutations were identified in 15 men (37%): 4 (10%) and 11 (27%) in BRCA1 and BRCA2, respectively. In the remaining 26 men, we screened for large genomic rearrangements in BRCA1 and BRCA2 using multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification.
RESULTS: We did not detect any large g

The aim of this study was to compare reproductive factors, use of oral contraceptives (OC) and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in consecutive Jewish Ashkenazi breast cancer patients, with and without BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations. Jewish Israeli women with breast cancer (n=385) were genotyped for the three predominant Jewish mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2, and data on reproductive factors, OC and HRT use, were analyzed using logistic regression analyses. Overall, 28/385 (7.3%) of participants were mutation carriers, the majority of whom were Ashkenazi (n=22; 78.6%) and were diagnosed with breast cance

Orthodox Judaism has a positive attitude toward marital intimacy and minimally involves itself in spousal sexual activity. One notable exception, however, is that, to the greatest possible extent, male ejaculation must be vaginally contained. Clinicians working with Haredi (Ultraorthodox) Jewish couples will be hard pressed to suggest treatment interventions for certain sexual dysfunctions without a thorough understanding of this restriction. This article examines the origin and extent of this dictum, its impact on a number of sexual dysfunctions and implications for treatment, illustrated with

OBJECTIVE: To test whether the coexistence of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and Behçet's disease (BD) is more frequent than expected and whether each disease affects the severity of the other.
METHODS: We screened 353 charts of patients with FMF to detect individuals with concomitant BD. Of these, 152 patients with FMF over the age of 18 years were also interviewed and examined specifically. We also studied 53 patients with BD, looking for FMF and for their MEFV mutations. We compared BD patients with MEFV mutations to those without them.
RESULTS: None of 353 patients with FMF was found
