Health and Development at Age 19-24 Months of 19 Children Who Were Born with Microcephaly and Laboratory Evidence of Congenital Zika Virus Infection During the 2015 Zika Virus Outbreak - Brazil, 2017.

In November 2015, the Brazilian Ministry of Health (MOH) declared the Zika virus outbreak a public health emergency after an increase in microcephaly cases was reported in the northeast region of the country (1). During 2015-2016, 15 states in Brazil with laboratory-confirmed Zika virus transmission reported an increase in birth prevalence of microcephaly (2.8 cases per 10,000 live births), significantly exceeding prevalence in four states without confirmed transmission (0.6 per 10,000) (2). Although children with microcephaly and laboratory evidence of Zika virus infection have been described

Laboratory assessment and diagnosis of congenital viral infections: Rubella, cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), parvovirus B19 and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Viral infections during pregnancy may cause fetal or neonatal damage. Clinical intervention, which is required for certain viral infections, relies on laboratory tests performed during pregnancy and at the neonatal stage. This review describes traditional and advanced laboratory approaches and testing methods used for assessment of the six most significant viral infections during pregnancy: rubella virus (RV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), parvovirus B19 and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Interpretation of the laboratory tests results acc

From field to laboratory: isolation, genetic assessment, and parasitological behavior of Schistosoma mansoni obtained from naturally infected wild rodent Holochilus sciureus (Rodentia, Cricetidae), collected in Northeastern Brazil.

Wild rodent species are naturally infected by Schistosoma mansoni; however, the genetic characterization of the parasite, its parasitological features, and its role in human schistosomiasis are poorly understood. In this study, we isolated and characterized Schistosoma from naturally infected Holochilus sciureus, called HS strain, collected from a schistosomiasis endemic region in Maranhão State, Brazil. To isolate the parasite, miracidia obtained from the livers of H. sciureus were used to infect Biomphalaria glabrata of sympatric (called SB) and allopatric (called BH) strains, and the produc

Native vs Prosthetic Valve Histoplasma capsulatum Infective Endocarditis: A Case Report and Systemic Literature Review Comparing Patient Presentation, Treatment Modalities, Clinical Outcomes, and Diagnostic Laboratory Testing.

Histoplasma capsulatum is a rare cause of fungal endocarditis that affects both native and prosthetic valves. It is associated with a high mortality rate if not diagnosed early and treated with a combination of antifungal therapy and surgical intervention. We present a case of a 47-year-old man with histoplasmosis infective endocarditis. He was successfully treated with antifungal therapy and surgical replacement of the infected bioprosthetic aortic valve. Our systemic literature review includes 52 articles encompassing 60 individual cases of H. capsulatum infective endocarditis from 1940 to 2

Invasive pneumococcal infections in Canadian children, 1991-1998: implications for new vaccination strategies. Canadian Paediatric Society/Laboratory Centre for Disease Control Immunization Monitoring Program, Active (IMPACT).

We reviewed 2040 consecutive cases of invasive pneumococcal infection that were seen at 11 pediatric centers across Canada during 1991-1998 to determine if such infections could be prevented by new conjugate vaccines. Isolates from 1528 cases were serotyped. Most cases (61.5%) occurred in patients aged >2 years. Underlying medical conditions were present in 23.2% of case patients. Serotypes in the 7-valent conjugate vaccine matched isolates as follows: 85.8% of tested isolates from children aged 6 months to 5 years, but significantly fewer isolates in younger and older children; 72.9% of isola

Experimental HIV infection of human lymphoid tissue: correlation of CD4+ T cell depletion and virus syncytium-inducing/non-syncytium-inducing phenotype in histocultures inoculated with laboratory strains and patient isolates of HIV type 1.

It is now apparent that HIV infection leads to a gradual collapse of a complex system of lymphoid tissue. This collapse tends to be associated with a change in virus tropism from macrophages to T lymphocytes, and a change in phenotype from nonsyncytium inducing (NSI) to syncytium inducing (SI). An experimental system is required to study the role of this change in HIV pathogenesis in lymphoid tissue. Here we describe such a system. Histocultures of human lymphoid tissue preserve their general cytoarchitecture, including a network of follicular dendritic cells (FDCs). Histocultures of tonsils,

Clinical symptoms associated with laboratory findings and placental histopathology in full-term, non-infected neonates born to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positive mothers.

This study comprehensively examines clinical symptoms, laboratory findings, and placental pathology in 40 cases of singleton full-term SARS-CoV-2 negative neonates. Their mothers, previously healthy, with uncomplicated pregnancies, were infected peripartum and presented COVID-19 symptoms of various severity. Neonates had predominately diarrhea, the yet unreported absent sucking reflex, elevated COVID-19 inflammatory and ischemia/asphyxia markers as serum ferritin, interleukin-6 and cardiac troponin-T, while placentas demonstrated mild vascular and/or inflammatory lesions. We hypothesize that t
