For a five month period, infants examined on admission and discharge from the newborn nursery and at two-week and two-month well-baby visits were examined for breast nodule size and the presence of galactorrhea. Nine hundred eighty-four examinations were performed on 640 children. Forty-five examinations (4.6%) on 38 infants revealed galactorrhea. "Witch's milk" was noted at all ages studied, including 1.8% of examinations at 2 months of age. All the infants with galactorrhea were born at term, with neither sex predominating. Children with galactorrhea had breast nodules significantly larger t

A rare case of agalactia in a 7 year old cow is described. At the start of the 5th lactation all the teat cisterns were obliterated. Post mortem x-ray examination, with bariumsulfate contrast deposition in the glandular--and the teat cisterns, showed horizontal membranes in the proximal half of the teat cisterns. The membranes were 13--20 mm thick and consisted of fibrous tissue. Glandular tissue, distal parts of teat cisterns and teat canals were normal, and there was no sign of mastitis Obliteration of the teat cisterns, which had developed during the dry period, between the 4th and 5th lact

A patient in whom there was a temporal relationship between an operation on the breast and the onset of galactorrhoea, amenorrhoea and hyperprolactinaemia is described. It is suggested that the operation initiated excessive prolactin secretion via the neural suckling reflex, and that the galactorrhoea and amenorrhoea were caused by the elevated serum prolactin levels.

Eight of 115 patients with empty sella had concurrent galactorrhea. All 8 patients had abnormal sellae, and the diagnosis of empty sella was made by polytome pneumoencephalography. There were no obvious endocrine dysfunctions, but 2 patients had elevated prolactin levels. One mechanism for production of galactorrhea may involve compression of the hypothalamus and/or pituitary stalk; this was suggested by most of our observations. There may be a coincidental association of empty sella with galactorrhea, and this association is probably more common than previously noted. Evaluation of patients w

A 30-year-old woman had galactorrhea and secondary amenorrhea, along with symptoms, signs, and laboratory findings of primary hypothyroidism. Serum prolactin and thyrotropin (TSH) levels were elevated. After initiation of thyroid hormone replacement, serum TSH and prolactin levels fell progressively into the normal range. Along with these changes, the patient noted a return of normal menstrual function and the galactorrhea disappeared.

This trial was performed within one large piglet producing herd in Sweden during June-August 1976. One hundred and sixty sows were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: (1) 15 mg PGF2alpha i.m., (2) 20 mg PGF2alpha i.m., (3) two injections of 10 mg PGF2alpha i.m. at c. 8 h interval, (4) untreated countrol sows. PGF2alpha was administered in the morning of days 111, 112 or 113 of pregnancy. Of the PGF2alpha-treated sows, 83--85% farrowed within 48 h after treatment. No effect of day of treatment was found. Nor was any difference between groups observed. Neither of the treatments

Three women with the galactorrhea-amenorrhea syndrome and elevated prolactin concentrations experienced a return of regular ovulatory menses within 37-94 days after starting pyridoxine treatment (200-600 mg/day). In each the galactorrhea ceased and serum prolactin levels were maintained in the normal range while taking pyridoxine. In two other women with prolonged secondary amenorrhea but without hyperprolactinemia or galactorrhea, pyridoxine at dosages up to 600 mg/day did not restore ovulatory menses. Pyridoxine treatment was also ineffective in decreasing profuse galactorrhea in one woman w

An acromegalic patient with galactorrhea was treated with an ergot alkaloid, 2-Br-alpha-ergocryptine (CB-154). Serum prolactin decreased rapidly to normal level by CB-154 and the complete cessation of galactorrhea was noted. The inhibitory effect of CB-154 On growth hormone (GH) release was also noted, but slight. The mechanism of inhibitory action of CB-154 on both prolactin and GH secretion was discussed in connection with the experimental model of pituitary tumors, in which both hormones were produced by a single type of tumor cells. The discontinuation of CB-154 treatment was associated wi
