[Is prolonged psychological stress an etiological factor in breast cancer?].

1,088 women with cancer were seen in a period of 4 1/2 years at the Cancer Centre of the Greek Social Security Department in Athens. The authors present their results as far as psychological stress influences the development of cancer of the breast in 813 patients (Group A) and in 685 women who did not have cancer of the breast (Group B). They were able to show that Group A had a positive correlation which was statistically very significant (p less than 0.001) with the following parameters: the death of a much-loved person; the negative behaviour of the husband; an unexpected change in life st

Understanding the role of technology to support life transitions in residential aged care settings.

Everyday practices, including technology use, by older adults can significantly change during important life transitions. However, technologies do not always match their evolving needs. This paper examines how older adults reconfigure everyday technology use when navigating major life transitions in later life. We have engaged with fifteen participants living in residential care settings for three years in weekly group activities and individual visits. Through deep and meaningful collaborations, we got to know these residents and their life circumstances closely. We created detailed narratives

How resilience and age shape the link between negative life events and suicidal ideation in clinically depressed adolescents: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders and related suicidal ideation among adolescents are pressing global health concerns. Although negative life events (NLEs) are recognized risk factors, the psychological mechanisms underlying the transition from adversity to suicidal ideation (SI), particularly in clinically depressed adolescents, remain unclear. This study is grounded in the vulnerability‒stress framework and investigates the developmental and psychological pathways linking NLEs and suicidal ideation in a clinical sample of depressed adolescents. METHODS: A total of 341 adolescents (aged 10-19) with

Understanding the correlation between benevolent childhood experiences, negative life events and mental health: The role of health risk behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between individual benevolent childhood experiences (BCEs), negative life events (NLEs), and adolescent mental health, including anxiety and depression were discussed. Although ACEs has been extensively studied, less attention has been paid to the combination of BCEs, and the role of health risk behaviors (HRBs) also play an important part. Our goals were: 1) To explore whether HRBs moderate the relationship between BCEs and depression; 2) Whether NLEs also has this moderate effect. METHODS: A multi-stage cluster sampling method was used to select Grade 4 college

Understanding Autistic Young Adults' Perceptions and Experiences of Traumatic and Stressful Events.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore how young autistic adults experience and respond to stressful life events, and the relationship between autistic characteristics and symptoms of stress associated with these events. METHODS: Using an exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach, an online qualitative survey was first administered to 50 autistic young adults asking about their perceptions of trauma and the role that autistic behaviours may play in their perceptions of and responses to traumatic events. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. To examine the general

Factors Predicting Depression among Disadvantaged Adolescents.

PURPOSE: This study had two main objectives. First, it aimed to validate a causal model of the relationships between gender, family history of depression, rumination, perceived negative life events, perceived stress, resilience, and depression among disadvantaged adolescents. Second, it aimed to investigate both the direct and indirect effects of gender, family history of depression, rumination, perceived negative life events, perceived stress, and resilience on depression among disadvantaged adolescents. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional model-testing design. The participants were 5

Stressful Life Events and Neuroticism among Chinese Women with Recurrent Major Depressive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Depression is associated with a high incidence of stressful life events (SLEs) and neuroticism. However, the impact of SLEs and neuroticism on the recurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to identify the potential causal relationship between SLEs, neuroticism, and depression recurrence. METHODS: This study included 5561 female patients with recurrent MDD (ages 30-60) and 4257 healthy volunteers (ages 40-60) from the China, Oxford, and Virginia Commonwealth University Experimental Research on Genetic Epidemiology (CONVERGE) study. We compar

A longitudinal network of psychotic-like experiences, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and adverse life events: a cohort study of 3,358 college students.

AIMS: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), especially for persistent PLEs, are highly predictive of subsequent mental health problems. Hence, it is crucial to explore the psychopathological associations underlying the occurrence and persistence of PLEs. This study aimed to explore the above issues through a longitudinal dynamic network approach among PLEs and psychological and psychosocial factors. METHODS: A total of 3,358 college students completed two waves of online survey (from Oct 2021 to Oct 2022). Socio-demographic information was collected at baseline, and PLEs, depressive and anxiety

Exploring false negatives in self-reported trauma exposure status.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma exposure is often assessed using checklists such as the Life Events Checklist for DSM-5 (LEC-5; Weathers et al., 2013b). When participants endorse multiple events, respondents are asked to identify a single, worst event (i.e., index event). Recent work indicates that the "worst event" method leads to a concerning number of false negatives. The purpose of the current study was to replicate previous findings of false negatives and extend them by examining characteristics associated with false negatives, such as trauma type, means of exposure, recency of trauma, and posttraum

Life course BMI trajectories from childhood to mid-adulthood are differentially associated with anxiety and depression outcomes in middle age.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a risk factor for multimorbidity, including depression and possibly anxiety. However, it is currently unclear how patterns of change in BMI over the life course differentially influence the magnitude in risk of depression and anxiety in mid-adulthood. We aimed to examine associations between BMI trajectories from childhood to adulthood and the risk of depression and anxiety in middle age. METHODS: In the Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study (n = 2416), five distinct BMI trajectories were previously defined from age 5 to 45 years using group-based modelling. At

Association of Mental Health Conditions, Recent Stressful Life Events, and Adverse Childhood Experiences with Postpartum Substance Use - Seven States, 2019-2020.

Most pregnancy-related deaths due to mental health conditions, which include overdose and poisoning related to substance use disorder, occur during the late (43-365-day) postpartum period (1). Adverse childhood experiences and stressful life events are associated with increased substance use during pregnancy (2,3). Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) respondents in seven states with high opioid overdose mortality rates were recontacted 9-10 months after giving birth in 2019 and asked about postpartum prescription opioid misuse,* tobacco use, unhealthy alcohol use,† and use of o

Elucidating the Impact of Childhood, Adulthood, and Cumulative Lifetime Trauma Exposure on Psychiatric Symptoms in Early Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders.

Cumulative lifetime trauma has a profound impact on the development of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. However, few studies have determined participants' most distressing (i.e., "worst") life event in childhood or adulthood or examined whether this event contributes to poorer clinical outcomes. The present study aimed to (a) determine the associations between the worst life event and demographic/clinical variables and (b) examine the associations between the worst life event and psychiatric symptoms (i.e., positive, negative, depressive, and anxiety symptoms). Participants (N = 150) were out

Prospective associations between maternal stress during pregnancy and fasting glucose with obstetric and neonatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This prospective study investigated associations between maternal stress exposure and maternal psychological stress measures during pregnancy with obstetric and neonatal outcomes. We also tested whether any observed associations would be moderated by increasing glucose levels, as increased glycaemia is also associated with adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: 203 women between 24 and 30 weeks gestation completed validated questionnaires assessing pregnancy-related major events and major life events, maternal perceived stress, and depression, anxiety, and stress symptom

Antenatal predictors of incident and persistent postnatal depressive symptoms in rural Ethiopia: a population-based prospective study.

BACKGROUND: There have been few studies to examine antenatal predictors of incident postnatal depression, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The aim of this study was to investigate antenatal predictors of incident and persistent maternal depression in a rural Ethiopian community in order to inform development of antenatal interventions. METHOD: A population-based prospective study was conducted in Sodo district, south central Ethiopia. A locally validated version of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to assess antenatal (second and third trimesters) and

Recently arrived refugee children: The quality and outcomes of Best Interests of the Child assessments.

Best Interests of the Child (BIC) assessments provide migration authorities with behavioral information about which interests of the child could be taken into account before a decision is made on the request for a residence permit. This study provides insight into the quality and outcomes of BIC assessments with 16 unaccompanied children (15-18 years) and 11 accompanied children (4-16 years) who have recently arrived in the Netherlands and requested asylum (N = 27). The results suggest that BIC assessments provide relevant information that enables assessors to determine the best interests of r

Children's resilience and trauma-specific cognitive behavioral therapy: Comparing resilience as an outcome, a trait, and a process.

Resilience, which is associated with relatively positive outcomes following negative life experiences, is an important research target in the field of child maltreatment (Luthar et al., 2000). The extant literature contains multiple conceptualizations of resilience, which hinders development in research and clinical utility. Three models emerge from the literature: resilience as an immediate outcome (i.e., behavioral or symptom response), resilience as a trait, and resilience as a dynamic process. The current study compared these models in youth undergoing trauma-specific cognitive behavioral

Assessing the interplay of childhood adversities with more recent stressful life events and conditions in predicting panic pathology among adults from the general population.

BACKGROUND: Although research suggests that (a) childhood adversities and more recent stressful life events/conditions are risk factors for panic pathology and that (b) early life stress increases vulnerability to later psychopathology, it remains unclear whether childhood adversities amplify the association between more recent stressful life events/conditions and panic pathology. METHODS: Data were derived from a general population sample (Study of Health in Pomerania, SHIP). Lifetime panic pathology was assessed with the Munich Composite International Diagnostic Interview (M-CIDI). Childhoo

What about me? The loss of self through the experience of traumatic childbirth.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: birth trauma has become an increasingly recognised maternal mental health issue and has important implications for both mother and infant. The importance of subjective birth experience in the development of birth trauma has been identified and may mediate the lack of theoretical consistency in this area. The current study aims to explore the subjective experience of birth trauma among first time mothers in Ireland. It aims to separate the potential effects of peripartum depression (PPD) from this in limiting this qualitative investigation to women who reported birth t
