Antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in community-acquired pediatric neck abscesses.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the microbiology, particularly the prevalence of MRSA, in pediatric patients with community-acquired bacterial lymphadenitis. Long considered a nosocomial organism, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has recently emerged as a cause of community-acquired infections. Resistance to other classes of antibiotics, including clindamycin, is prevalent amongst S. aureus, as well. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records and culture results of patients under the age of 18 who underwent trans-cervical surgical drainage of abscessed lymph nodes betwee…

Tuberculosis in ruminants: characteristics of intra-tonsilar Mycobacterium bovis infection models in cattle and deer.

Mycobacterium bovis infection produces tubercular lymphadenitis in the head lymphatics of cattle and deer, in addition to pulmonary disease. A low-dose intra-tonsilar infection model that establishes tuberculosis (Tb) lymphadenitis in cattle and deer is characterised in this study. Intra-tonsilar infection of red deer (500 cfus of M. bovis) was monitored longitudinally at 6-week intervals over a period of 23 weeks. Lesion characteristics, bacteriological and immunological parameters were assessed, and compared against those observed in cattle at 20 weeks post-infection, where the latter were i…

Clinicopathologic findings associated with Lagenidium sp. infection in 6 dogs: initial description of an emerging oomycosis.

An oomycotic pathogen in the genus Lagenidium was isolated from tissues obtained from 6 dogs with progressive cutaneous disease. Initial cli … ssion of subcutaneous lesions or lymphadenopathy. On postmortem examination, regional granulomatous lymphadenitis was found in all 6 dogs, great vessel invasion in 3 dogs, pulmonary lesions in 2 dogs. ureteral obstruction in 1 dog, mediastinal lymphadenitis in 1 dog, and hilar lymphadenitis with invasion of the distal esophagus and trachea in 1 dog. Disseminated Mycobacterium abscessus infection with idiopathic CD4+ T-lymphocytopenia: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic CD4+ T lymphocytopenia is a rare immune dysfunction disease that is usually found after opportunistic infections. Mycobacterium abscessus is a rapidly growing mycobacterium that can cause pulmonary infections, lymphadenitis, skin and soft tissue infections, disseminated infections, among others, as a conditional pathogenic bacterium. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 43-year-old Chinese woman who developed disseminated Mycobacterium abscessus infection due to idiopathic CD4+ T lymphocytopenia. The patient exhibited symptoms including skin infections, lymphaden…

A Pain in the Neck Sixty Years On.

This report describes the recurrence of an infected first branchial cleft cyst in an adult and highlights the importance of considering branchial cleft cysts in the differential diagnosis of cervical lymphadenitis or abscess in early childhood to enable definitive surgery.

Nursing infant with acquired toxoplasmosis in the first months of life - a case report.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii and the probability of this infection occurring in the first months of life is usually low beca … baby a piece of undercooked beef to suck on. After some time, the baby presented fever and cervical lymphadenitis. This report emphasizes the importance of serological surveys of toxoplasmosis in nursing infants presenting with fever and lymphadenitis, in view of the possible acquisition of toxoplasmosis in the first months of life.

[Bacille Calmette-Guérin adenitis: diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines].

Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination is occasionally associated with lymphadenitis, called BCGitis, and only rarely can it occur in the setting of immunodeficiency. We report six cases of BCGitis admitted to our hospital (2005-7) for surgical treatment: five were male, in all cases BCG was given at birth; median age at presentation was 5.5 months. Three children had spontaneous drainage, and one child had two lymph node regions involved (axillary and supraclavicular). Five required surgical drainage due to suppuration or persistence of lymphadenopathy. The patient with multiple lymph node…

[Antibodies to certain infections on large goat farms in the Czech Republic].

On five newly established large goat farms the incidence of antibodies to some chronic and latent infections (arthritis and encephalitis, Q-fever, caseous lymphadenitis and toxoplazmosis) was investigated in the first six months of the year 1994. Agar-gel immunodiffusion did not reveal any antibodies to arthritis and encephalitis of goats (CAE). Complement fixation test did not demonstrate any antibodies to Q-fever. Neither agar-gel immunodiffusion nor neutralization test confirmed any antibodies to caseous lymphadentitis. Complement fixation test (titer 1:8 and more) revealed antibodies to to…

Paracortical alteration in lymphadenopathic and tumor-draining lymph nodes: histologic study.

Histologic studies of 142 enlarged lymph nodes from 124 patients, diagnosed histologically as nonspecific chronic lymphadenitis or reactive hyperplasia, revealed a characteristic nodular alteration in the paracortical area of nodes from the axillary, cervical, and inguinal regions, and rarely in abdominal, mediastinal, and retroperitoneal groups. In 1389 lymph nodes from 100 radical mastectomy specimens similar changes were noted more frequently in the lower than in higher levels of the tumor-draining axillary nodes. The nodule was composed of small lymphocytes associated with postcapillary ve…

Cryptococcal immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome: report of four cases in three patients and review of the literature.

Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndromes (IRIS) in patients with AIDS are characterized by atypical manifestations of opportunistic pathogens in patients experiencing improvement in CD4 cell counts following receipt of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). We report four cases of IRIS due to Cryptococcus neoformans in three patients and review the literature of cryptococcal IRIS in AIDS (an additional 21 episodes). The IRIS presentation was lymphadenitis in all three patients; one patient also had meningeal IRIS. Combining our patients with the literature review revealed the follo…
