Fatal acute uterine inversion post-vaginal delivery: an autopsy-based case report.

Uterine inversion refers to the condition where the fundus is turned inside and positioned within the uterine cavity. Uterine inversion is a life-threatening and uncommon obstetric emergency that can be fatal because of postpartum hemorrhage and shock. Acute uterine inversion is the most common type, which occurs within 24 h of delivery and is usually associated with untrained birth attendants and a lack of knowledge of labor-inducing drugs. We present a case of alleged medical negligence in the death of a 23-year-old female following vaginal delivery of a second child with autopsy findings su

Loss of chance: the uncertainty of the event or the uncertainty of the conduct? Case Series and Medicolegal Considerations.

BACKGROUND: The concept of damages for loss of chance originated in France in 1877 and was adapted to healthcare in 1962. In Italy, it was first introduced in healthcare liability in 2004, with Civil Court of Cassation decision No. 4400. Italian jurisprudence recognizes the loss of chance as an independent, legally and economically assessable damage, distinct from the actual outcome lost. The landmark St. Martin Judgments of 2019 further established that such damages can be claimed if they involve appreciable, serious, and consistent values. This requires proving a causal link between the cond

Lower third molar surgery - consent and coronectomy.

This article reports a brief overview of the risks associated with lower third molar extractions, and the claims that coronectomy may be useful as a treatment modality in managing some aspects of those risks. It discusses the position in terms of consent, and reports that some cases suggest that clinicians who do not offer coronectomy in appropriate circumstances may be vulnerable to litigation.

The cost of adverse events from knee surgery in the United Kingdom: an in-depth review of the National Health Service Litigation Authority database.

BACKGROUND: There has been a significant rise in the number and value of claims against the National Health Service (NHS), with limited studies on litigation in orthopaedic surgery and none in knee surgery alone. We aimed to examine claims against the NHS involving all aspects of knee surgery with respect to costs and trends. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: To raise awareness of the reasons for litigation in knee surgery, thus potentially improve patient care and reduce future claims. METHODS: We analysed the NHS litigation authority (NHSLA) database for all orthopaedic surgery claims reported to the NH

[Pre-hospital treatment of an anterior shoulder dislocation: medico-legal concerns].

A man of 23 years, diabetic of type 1, shows a functional handicap of the right upper limb following a convulsion in the context of hypoglycemia. On arrival of the "S.A.M.U.", the physician diagnoses an anterior shoulder dislocation that he decides to reduce on the spot after analgesic treatment. The X-ray examination at the emergency shows a reduction of the dislocation as well as a fracture of the greater tuberosity. Has the fracture followed the convulsion or the reduction movement ? The absence of an X-ray examination before the reduction movement presents a forensic medical problem. Certa

Medico-legal considerations in a case of splenic injury that occurred during colonoscopy.

Colonoscopy has became the gold standard diagnostic and therapeutic treatment for rectum and colon diseases. The splenic injury is a rare complication of colonoscopy and relatively few cases (less than 70) have been reported in the literature so far. Here we present a case of splenic rupture identified in an 80 year-old man few hours after an apparently uneventful colonoscopy. Acknowledging a causal relationship between the lesion and the diagnostic procedures, we discuss the possible medico-legal implications with regard to professional liability considering the exceptional nature of such an

[Torsion of spermatic cord: can we trust a previous orchidopexy? A case report with loss of a single testis with medico-legal issue].

The authors report the case of a patient aged of 27 years who presented in the past a testicular torsion with loss of the ipsilateral testis and fixation of the contralateral one. Ten years later, he presented with pain on the remaining testis, which evolved to necrosis, and led to a second orchidectomy. In retrospective, it appears that the assumption that the testis had been adequately fixed ten years earlier led to the loss of the remaining testis. We thus recommend an urgent surgical exploration when facing a suspicion of spermatic cord torsion, regardless of previous history of orchidopex

Endoscopic sedation: medicolegal considerations.

The availability of endoscopy as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool has caused the number of procedures performed in the United States to greatly increase; additionally, the volume and complexity of endoscopic procedures performed under sedation, including difficult procedures performed on frail and severely ill patients, has increased. The goals of endoscopic sedation are to provide patients with a successful procedure and to ensure that they remain safe and are relieved from anxiety and discomfort; agents should provide efficient, appropriate sedation and allow patients to recover rapidly. Medical litigation as a result of awareness during general anaesthesia: a case report.

In the literature, little attention has been paid to the medico-legal implications of awareness during general anaesthesia, a complication which has been reported with an incidence of 0.5-2%. We present the case of a 39-year-old nurse who experienced awareness during salpingo-adnexectomy for tubo-ovarian pregnancy. The operation was performed as an emergency, due to severe haemorrhage. Anaesthesia was induced with 125 mg of thiopental sodium and 60 mg of succinylcholine, and then maintained with repeated doses of fentanyl and 7 mg of vecuronium. In the court settlement, medical liability was r
