Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), including pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, account for significant maternal and fetal mortality globally and especially in South Africa. Objective. To formulate clinical guidelines for the management of HDP in order to substantially reduce the number of maternal deaths from HDP. Methods. The Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II) instrument was used to formulate the guidelines and included six domains: scope and purpose; stakeholder involvement; rigour and development; clarity of presentation; applicability; and editorial independence.

BACKGROUND: India has reduced its maternal mortality ratio faster than the global average, reaching 93 per 100,000 live births in 2019-21 and 88 in 2021-23. The national figure hides a nearly nine-fold gap between the best and worst-performing states. The end of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) era was marked in 2015, and while maternal and child mortality have been halved, MGD 4 and MDG 5 are off-track at the global level. Reductions in neonatal death rates (age <1 month) lag behind those for post-neonates (age 1-59 months), and stillbirth rates (omitted from the MDGs) have been virtually unchanged. Clinicians in China are deeply involved in efforts to improve maternity care throughout the country. A Women's Health section has been established in the Chinese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Staff of tertiary hospitals participate in perinatal surveillance of cities, including regular maternal and perinatal mortality meetings and comparative inter-hospital evaluations of service and clinical statistics.
