The effects of choanal atresia on development of the paranasal sinuses and turbinates.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the volume of paranasal sinuses (PNS) and turbinate in patients with unilateral choanal atresia (CA). MATERIALS AND METHOD: Computed tomography images of PNS in 11 individuals with unilateral CA were evaluated retrospectively. Mucosal thickness and volume of the maxillary, frontal and sphenoidal sinuses were determined, in addition to the volume of the middle and inferior turbinate. The unaffected nasal side of patients was used as a control group for the measurements. The results comprised the measurements of the atresic side compared to t

Paranasal sinus development in children: A magnetic resonance imaging analysis.

BACKGROUND: The anatomy of the paranasal sinus is significantly different between adults and children, and surgeons must be aware of these differences to safely perform pediatric functional endoscopic sinus surgery. The purpose of this study was to determine the normal dimensions of the paranasal sinuses during development using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data compiled from the largest cohort to date. METHODS: The records of 2025 children, aged 0-18 years, who underwent cranial MRI, were examined retrospectively and 1452 patients with no history of sinus disease were included in the stu

Odontogenic sinusitis involving the frontal sinus: is middle meatal antrostomy enough?

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Inflammatory conditions of the posterior maxillary teeth may cause odontogenic sinusitis (OS), which most commonly involves the maxillary sinus due to its proximity to those teeth. The infective process frequently spreads outside the maxillary sinus, involving the anterior ethmoid and the frontal sinuses. The underlying odontogenic condition must be addressed before or during the surgical procedure. The role of frontal sinusotomy in this setting has not been studied. The aim of this study is to present the surgical outcome of patients who presented with OS involving the f

Anatomic risk factors for sinus disease: fact or fiction?

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal anatomic variants have been postulated as a risk factor for sinus disease. Therefore, a study was conducted to examine the correlation of sinus disease to septal deviation, concha bullosa, and infraorbital ethmoid cells. METHODS: Two hundred fifty consecutive sinus and orbital computed tomography scans were examined at the University of Virginia over a 2-year period. Coronal, sagittal, and axial views were examined for the presence and size of concha bullosa and infraorbital ethmoid cells. Septal deviations were measured by examining the width of the nasal cavity at the

Postoperative maxillary cyst after maxillary sinus augmentation.

The posterior edentulous maxilla is a critical anatomic region for dental implant therapy. Because of severe alveolar bone resorption and maxillary sinus pneumatization, low bone volume is often presented clinically. Although maxillary sinus augmentation has been developed to promote bone reconstruction and oral rehabilitation, complications have been reported. Possible complications include paranasal sinusitis, loss of the graft, and displacement of an implant into the antrum. In this study, we present an observed rare complication of maxillary sinus augmentation, a postoperative maxillary cy

CT of perineural tumor extension: pterygopalatine fossa.

Tumors of the oral cavity and paranasal sinuses can spread along nerves to areas apparently removed from the primary tumor. In tumors of the palate, sinuses, and face, this "perineural" spread usually involves the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve. The pterygopalatine fossa is a pathway of the maxillary nerve and becomes a key landmark in the detection of neural metastasis by computed tomography (CT). Obliteration of the fat in the fossa suggests pathology. Case material illustrating neural extension is presented and the CT findings are described.

Effect of oxymetazoline nose drops on acute sinusitis in the rabbit.

This investigation was designed to evaluate the effect of the common topical nasal decongestant oxymetazoline hydrochloride on the early local tissue defense in an experimental bacterial infection. For that purpose, a bilateral infection of the maxillary sinus was induced in 14 rabbits. Nose drops (oxymetazoline) were instilled in one nasal cavity, and placebo in the other. After 48 hours, the degree of infection was judged by using a semiquantitative inflammatory score to evaluate histologic preparations of the maxillary sinuses. On the oxymetazoline-treated side, we found a significantly hig

[Maxillary sinus lesions and their association with apical lesions observed by cone beam computed tomography. A retrospective cross-sectional study].

INTRODUCTION: Through cone beam computed tomography, alterations in the maxillary sinuses, such as opacities, space occupation and thickening of the mucosa, can be observed. Some factors contribute to this thickening, standing out among dental factors, periodontitis, apical pathology and endodontic treatments. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between changes observed in the maxillary sinuses and apical lesions using cone beam computed tomography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a descriptive study with a retrospective and cross-sectional, correlational, field, non-experimental design. Th

[A case of isolated aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus].

Aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus is rarely seen in nonimmunocompromised patients. Among paranasal sinus infections associated with aspergillosis, the most common subtype is Aspergillus fumigatus. A 41-year-old woman presented with facial pain. She had a five-year history of root canal filling in the right upper molar teeth. Paranasal sinus tomography showed fungal sinusitis of radiopaque appearance, giving the impression of a foreign body in the maxillary sinus. The patient underwent endoscopic sinus surgery to purge infection of the maxillary sinus. Pathological examination revealed asper
