Platelet rich plasma injection grafts for musculoskeletal injuries: a review.

In Europe and the United States, there is an increasing prevalence of the use of autologous blood products to facilitate healing in a variety of applications. Recently, we have learned more about specific growth factors, which play a crucial role in the healing process. With that knowledge there is abundant enthusiasm in the application of concentrated platelets, which release a supra-maximal quantity of these growth factors to stimulate recovery in non-healing injuries. For 20 years, the application of autologous PRP has been safely used and documented in many fields including; orthopedics, s

Retrospective study of 1251 maxillofacial fractures in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the facial skeleton are relatively uncommon in children and adolescents, and only a few reports review a significant number of patients. The authors performed a retrospective study to analyze the different characteristics of such fractures in the pediatric population of Portugal. METHODS: The authors reviewed the clinical records of a series of 912 patients 18 years of age or younger with facial fractures treated by the Departments of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery and of Maxillofacial Surgery, São João Hospital, in Porto, Portugal, between the years 1

Retrospective analysis of two hundred thirty-five pediatric mandibular fracture cases.

Maxillofacial fractures are encountered less commonly during childhood period due to anatomic, social, cultural, and environmental factors. Although the incidence of all maxillofacial fractures is 1% to 15% among pediatric and adolescent patients, this rate drops to less than 1% in children below 5 years age. Two hundred thirty-five cases (<or=16 age) with mandibular fracture were evaluated retrospectively. Patients records were examined in terms of age, gender, cause of fracture, fracture localization, number of fractures, fracture pattern, accompanying injuries, applied treatment methods, an

Acute Pain Management.

Control of acute pain in oral and maxillofacial surgery is important for patient care and comfort. Oral surgical procedures are associated with tissue injury and inflammation. Acute pain can arise directly from a surgical procedure or from problems such as dental caries, infection, perforation of maxillary sinus, pericoronitis, and jaw fractures. The major factor in acute pain management is deciding on an appropriate intervention and/or analgesics that will provide the best pain relief. Multimodal pain control has taken a leading role in effectively managing acute pain. This article covers the

Definitive magnetic nasal prosthesis for partial nasal defect.

Maxillofacial trauma refers to any injury to the face or jaw caused by physical force, trauma, the presence of foreign objects, animal or human bites, and burns. Facial defects can be devastating in their impact on physical structure and function of the affected individual, leading to potential compromises in quality of life. Restoration of facial defects, especially nasal defects, is a difficult challenge for both the surgeon and the prosthodontist. Here is a case report of partial nasal defect caused by trauma, rehabilitated with a magnetic nasal prosthesis made with silicone elastomers usin

Intracranial Injury Caused by Transorbital Penetrating Trauma: An E-Scooter Brake Handle as an Unusual Culprit.

Transorbital penetrating intracranial injuries are a rare but life-threatening subset of penetrating head traumas. While isolated cases caused by bicycle brake handles have been reported, often with fatal outcomes, this is the first documented case of such an injury caused by an electric scooter (e-scooter) brake handle. The objective is to present the unique management and clinical course of this unusual case. A case of a 76-year-old male is presented. The patient sustained a transorbital intracranial injury after a same-level fall onto a parked e-scooter, which resulted in the brake handle p

External fixation for tissue preservation following complex mandible trauma and its sequelae: reminder of a time-honored method and case series of 23 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are often called upon to manage complex mandible injuries, which can be associated with significant tissue loss. External fixation (EF) of comminuted, contaminated, compound, and infected fractures can preserve tissue, maintain anatomic integrity, and provide an effective stage in comprehensive reconstruction. The purpose of this report is to review the EF surgical technique and share our outcomes and experience of using EF over 6 years in 23 patients. STUDY DESIGN: Patients treated with mandibular EF were identified through a retrospective chart rev

Integrated management of mandibular fractures and traumatic dental injuries: a literature review and clinical algorithm proposal.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular fractures are among the most common maxillofacial injuries and are frequently associated with traumatic dental injuries (TDIs), creating combined skeletal, occlusal, periodontal, and pulpal treatment priorities. Integrated protocols addressing both the fracture and the dental component remain limited. METHODS: The present literature review was conducted by means of a structured search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection from 2000 to 2026, complemented by manual reference-list screening. A structured Population, Intervention/Exposure, Comparison…

A fractured peace: a changing pattern of violence.

Since the paramilitary cease-fire in Northern Ireland in August 1994 we have seen a change in the pattern of so called 'punishment attacks'. Shootings with low velocity handguns have been replaced by severe beatings to the extremities from multiple assailants using iron bars or similar weapons. In the 18 months prior to the cease-fire there were 177 punishment shootings, which were usually relatively minor and did not require any plastic surgical expertise. Between August 1994 and November 1996, however, there were 461 punishment beatings. These beatings result in much greater morbidity and re

Risk factors for blunt cerebrovascular injury in the pediatric patient: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: While blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) is a rare complication of blunt trauma, it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In the pediatric population, unique anatomy and development require screening criteria that accurately diagnose these injuries while limiting unwarranted radiation. METHODS: We searched Medline OVID, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases for studies that investigated the risk factors of BCVI in individuals younger than 18 years of age. We adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items in Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and

Endovascular repair of traumatic innominate artery injury: case report.

Traumatic injury to the innominate artery (IA) is an uncommon vascular condition with a prehospital mortality up to 70%. It may result from high-speed blunt chest trauma. We present a 22-year-old male motorcyclist who was struck by a car. The patient sustained multiple injuries and the initial assessment revealed a hemopericardium and a widened mediastinum. Following stabilization, whole-body imaging showed an intimal flap of the IA with contained contrast extravasation, and a lung laceration. The patient underwent endovascular stent grafting of the IA pseudoaneurysm via femoral artery access.

Management of Complications Related to Removal of the Buccal Fat Pad.

Removal of the buccal fat pad (BFP) is an important topic of discussion in the literature. Several studies have reported improvements in facial esthetics as a result of this technique. The BFP is close to vital structures, such as the facial nerve, parotid duct, and vessels. Injuries related to these structures may occur during the surgical procedure. This manuscript aimed to report and discuss 2 clinical cases of the complications after removal of the BFP. Besides the case presentation, a comprehensive review of the literature was also provided. The reported cases were 2 patients aged 31 and
