The impact of anxiety on prospective memory among children with nonverbal learning disabilities: a multinomial processing tree model.

This study investigated differences in prospective memory between children with nonverbal learning disabilities and typically developing children using a color matching task and a multinomial processing tree model. Additionally, it examines how trait anxiety and state anxiety influence the internal components of prospective memory in children with nonverbal learning disabilities. The results of this study were as follows. (1) Compared with typically developing children, children with nonverbal learning disabilities exhibited deficits in prospective memory; specifically, the multinomial process

Both sides now: visual perspective switching in episodic future thought and its relationship to dissociation.

Visual perspective in episodic memory and future thinking is conventionally treated as a one-dimensional construct, with first- and third-person perspectives at two poles of a continuum. However, given the opportunity, individuals often ascribe both of these perspectives to their imagery of a single event. In the present study, we found that "dual-perspective" imagery (involving switching between first- and third-person perspectives) is slightly more common than third-person imagery and is associated with higher self-reported ratings of centrality (importance in an individual's life story) and

Integration of event experiences to build relational knowledge in the human brain.

We investigated how the human brain integrates experiences of specific events to build general knowledge about typical event structure. We examined an episodic memory area important for temporal relations, anterior-lateral entorhinal cortex, and a semantic memory area important for action concepts, middle temporal gyrus, to understand how and when these areas contribute to these processes. Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while learning and recalling temporal relations among novel events over two sessions 1 week apart. Across distinct contexts, individual temporal r

How the body remembers: Examining the default mode and sensorimotor networks during moral injury autobiographical memory retrieval in PTSD.

Neural representations of sensory percepts and motor responses constitute key elements of autobiographical memory. However, these representations may remain as unintegrated sensory and motor fragments in traumatic memory, thus contributing toward re-experiencing and reliving symptoms in trauma-related conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Here, we investigated the sensorimotor network (SMN) and posterior default mode network (pDMN) using a group independent component analysis (ICA) by examining their functional connectivity during a script-driven memory retrieval paradigm o

Prefrontal cortical activation associated with prospective memory while walking around a real-world street environment.

Rostral PFC (area 10) activation is common during prospective memory (PM) tasks. But it is not clear what mental processes these activations index. Three candidate explanations from cognitive neuroscience theory are: (i) monitoring of the environment; (ii) spontaneous intention retrieval; (iii) a combination of the two. These explanations make different predictions about the temporal and spatial patterns of activation that would be seen in rostral PFC in naturalistic settings. Accordingly, we plotted functional events in PFC using portable fNIRS while people were carrying out a PM task outside

Past and future episodic detail retrieval is reduced among clinically normal older adults at higher genetic risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Remembering and imagining personal events that are rich in episodic (i.e., event-specific) detail is compromised in older adults who have mild cognitive impairment, a known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease dementia. Less clear is whether lower episodic detail generation is associated with higher risk for Alzheimer's disease dementia before mild clinical decline is detectable. METHOD: We compared past and future autobiographical thinking in clinically normal older adult carriers of the Alzheimer's disease-associated apolipoprotein E e4 allele (APOE4; n = 39) to demographically an

Episodic Future Thinking in Autism Spectrum Disorder and 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome: Association with Anticipatory Pleasure and Social Functioning.

Episodic future thinking (EFT) has been suggested to underlie anticipatory pleasure (AP), itself known to play a crucial role in social functioning (SF). Both AP and SF are impaired in various clinical populations, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). Therefore, the relationship between EFT, AP and SF was investigated, as well as the potential role of projecting oneself in a social vs. non-social context. Seventy-seven participants [24 with 22q11DS, 20 with ASD, 33 typically developing controls (TDs)] (aged 12-25) were included. They were assessed

The effects of imagery rescripting on memory outcomes in social anxiety disorder.

Imagery rescripting (IR) is an effective intervention for social anxiety disorder (SAD) that targets negative autobiographical memories. IR has been theorized to work through various memory mechanisms, including modifying the content of negative memory representations, changing memory appraisals, and improving negative schema or core beliefs about self and others. However, no prior studies have investigated the unique effects of rescripting itself relative to other IR intervention components on these proposed mechanisms. In this preliminary study, 33 individuals with SAD were randomized to rec

The Neurostructure of Morality and the Hubris of Memory Manipulation.

Neurotechnologies that promise to dampen (via pharmacologicals), disassociate (via electro-convulsive therapy), erase (via deep brain stimulation), and replace (via false memory creation) unsavory episodic memories are no longer the subject of science fiction. They have already arrived, and their funding suggests that they will not disappear anytime soon. In light of their emergence, this essay examines the neurostructure of normative morality to clarify that memory manipulation, which promises to take away that which is bad in human experience, also removes that which enables human beings to

[Psychogenic Retrograde and Anterograde Amnesia].

Patients with dissociative retrograde amnesia, under the influence of high stress, lose access to past autobiographical event memories that should have been remembered. Patients with dissociative anterograde amnesia cannot recall extremely emotional experiences. If dissociative anterograde amnesia is experienced repeatedly in daily life, something in daily life becomes a fear stimulus. Fear conditioning in dissociative anterograde amnesia is often related to past memories of child abuse that can not be recalled due to dissociative amnesia.

The Effect of Sleep Loss on Dual Time-Based Prospective Memory Tasks.

The aim of the present study was to deepen knowledge about the effect of a lowered vigilance state on time-based prospective memory (TBPM) performance. For this purpose 2 TBPM tasks (primary and interpolated), which shared a portion of the retention interval, and 3 reasoning tasks, as ongoing activities, were administered after total sleep deprivation and in a regular sleep condition. The results showed a detrimental effect of sleep deprivation on prospective memory performance and a partial dissociation between clock-checking behavior and time estimation for prospective compliance. This study

[Transient epileptic amnesia].

Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a sub-type of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, with amnesic seizures. TEA is characterized by recurrent episodes of amnesia. Diagnostic criteria are available for TEA, and these memory disturbances should not be misdiagnosed with transient global amnesia. The neuropsychological evaluation is normal, however, autobiographical memory impairment is present in 70% of the cases and accelerated long term forgetting in 44%. When a patient complains of memory disturbances, especially autobiographical memory, TEA must be considered especially if there was an amnesic e

Impaired capacity for prospection in the dementias--Theoretical and clinical implications.

OBJECTIVES: Prospection, or future thinking, refers to the ability to mentally simulate plausible events at a future point in time and draws heavily upon the capacity to retrieve autobiographical details from the past. This review examines the extent to which prospection is compromised in neurodegenerative disorders with a view to identifying (1) underlying mechanisms of future thinking disruption and (2) the impact of future thinking deficits on everyday adaptive functioning. METHODS: PubMed and MEDLINE were searched for peer-reviewed articles published or in press up to 14 October 2014. The

Inter-identity autobiographical amnesia in patients with dissociative identity disorder.

BACKGROUND: A major symptom of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID; formerly Multiple Personality Disorder) is dissociative amnesia, the inability to recall important personal information. Only two case studies have directly addressed autobiographical memory in DID. Both provided evidence suggestive of dissociative amnesia. The aim of the current study was to objectively assess transfer of autobiographical information between identities in a larger sample of DID patients. METHODS: Using a concealed information task, we assessed recognition of autobiographical details in an amnesic identity. E

What makes you feel nostalgic? A self-generated approach to nostalgia-evoking cues.

Nostalgia is often characterised as a predominantly positive, mixed-valence emotion that arises when recalling autobiographical memories from one's personal past. Nostalgic recollections may emerge involuntarily in response to environmental stimuli, such an old photograph or music, or through deliberate voluntary retrieval. The present study examined how individuals describe what makes them feel nostalgic, using a minimally constrained, open-ended self-generated approach. Participants (N = 256) responded to the question What makes you feel nostalgic? Their responses were coded for cue type and

FMRI correlates of autobiographical memory: Comparing silent retrieval with narrated retrieval.

FMRI studies of autobiographical memory (AM) retrieval typically ask subjects to retrieve memories silently to avoid speech-related motion artifacts. Recently, some fMRI studies have started to use overt (spoken) retrieval to probe moment-to-moment retrieved content. However, the extent to which the overt retrieval method alters fMRI activations during retrieval is unknown. Here we examined this question by eliciting unrehearsed AMs during fMRI scanning either overtly or silently, in the same subjects, in different runs. Differences between retrieval modality (silent vs. narrated) included gre

Daily-level associations between posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and reactions to retrieving positive autobiographical memories.

Trauma survivors with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) report difficulties accessing and describing positive memories. To understand these patterns, we examined daily-level relations of PTSD symptoms with affective, cognitive (dwelling/rumination; pushing memory out of one's mind; suppression; avoidance; distraction; thinking about something else; remembering negative or positive memories/events; negative or positive thoughts; accepting or disapproving memory; reinterpreting memory), and behavioral (using alcohol/drugs; smoking cigarettes; cravings for or seeking out cigarettes/alcohol/dru

Pre-surgical features of intrinsic brain networks predict single and joint epilepsy surgery outcomes.

Despite the effectiveness of surgical interventions for the treatment of intractable focal temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), the substrates that support good outcomes are poorly understood. While algorithms have been developed for the prediction of either seizure or cognitive/psychiatric outcomes alone, no study has reported on the functional and structural architecture that supports joint outcomes. We measured key aspects of pre-surgical whole brain functional/structural network architecture and evaluated their ability to predict post-operative seizure control in combination with cognitive/psychi

Effect of the emotional valence of autobiographical memory and parental bonding on depressive symptoms in a community sample.

Retrospective perceptions of parental bonding may be a protective factor for emotional health. These perceptions are grounded in autobiographical memory, which plays a key role in the onset and maintenance of depressive symptomatology. The aim of the present study was to explore whether the emotional valence of autobiographical memories (positive and negative) and the dimensions of parental bonding (care and protection) have an impact on depressive symptomatology, examining the role of depressive rumination and possible age-related differences. A total of 139 young adults (18-28 years) and 124

Prospective Memory, Sustained Attention and Response Inhibition in Poly-Substance Users Stable on Methadone Maintenance Treatment.

Background: Prospective memory and response inhibition are interrelated constructs, though studied separately in the drug addiction literature. Also, although sustained attention underlies response inhibition, its role in the relation between these functions has been largely neglected. The limited research on the cognitive effects of methadone-maintenance treatment (MMT) further stresses the importance of investigating these effects. Objective: Therefore, the current study focused on possible effects of MMT combined with long-term drug abuse on all these functions. Thirty five long term opiate
