Do we all grieve the same? A multigroup test of the dimensional structure of prolonged grief disorder among Danish bereaved partners and children.

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) is a newly recognized mental disorder in ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR. Several studies using exploratory factor analysis have found a unidimensional structure of the Prolonged Grief-13 (PG-13) measure of PGD. The recently published ICD-11 proposal proposes a distinction between two clusters of symptoms: Separation distress symptoms and associated cognitive, emotional and behavioral symptoms. The aim of the current study is to test competing factor structures of PGD in Danish samples of bereaved. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test competing models of PGD among t

The interteacher reliability of assessments of adolescents.

Teachers are uniquely placed to comment on the psychosocial functioning of their students. In particular, teacher report of symptoms and functional impairment is crucial in a diagnostic assessment of Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). For adolescents, however, schooling structures and other factors can influence the reliability of teacher reports. Clarity is needed for both clinicians and researchers regarding the interteacher reliability across different domains in the assessment of adolescents. This study investigated interrater reliability of teacher reports of adolescents usi

Changing contextual factors from baseline to 9-months post-HIV diagnosis predict 5-year mortality in Durban, South Africa.

Changes in an individual's contextual factors following HIV diagnosis may influence long-term outcomes. We evaluated how changes to contextual factors between HIV diagnosis and 9-month follow-up predict 5-year mortality among HIV-infected individuals in Durban, South Africa enrolled in the Sizanani Trial (NCT01188941). We used random survival forests to identify 9-month variables and changes from baseline predictive of time to mortality. We incorporated these into a Cox proportional hazards model including age, sex, and starting ART by 9 months a priori, 9-month social support and competing ne

Motivational processes and well-being in cardiac rehabilitation: a self-determination theory perspective.

This research examined the processes underpinning changes in psychological well-being and behavioural regulation in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patients using self-determination theory (SDT). A repeated measures design was used to identify the longitudinal relationships between SDT variables, psychological well-being and exercise behaviour during and following a structured CR programme. Participants were 389 cardiac patients (aged 36-84 years; M(age) = 64 ± 9 years; 34.3% female) referred to a 12-week-supervised CR programme. Psychological need satisfaction, behavioural regulation, health-rela

Development and validation of Mental Illness-Caregiving Impact Questionnaire (MI-CIQ) for caregivers of mentally ill individuals.

BACKGROUND: There is a noticeable lack of culturally appropriate instruments to assess the factors influencing caregivers of individuals with mental illnesses in Pakistan. Therefore, the current study was designed to develop a valid tool for measuring caregiving impact among caregivers of individuals with mental illness. METHOD: The development process involves multiple steps, including exploring the construct, generating an item pool, conducting item reduction, and establishing the scale’s psychometric properties. Items were generated by conducting semi-structured interviews with 12 caregiver

Financial Exploitation Is Associated With Structural and Functional Brain Differences in Healthy Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Age-related brain changes leading to altered socioemotional functioning may increase vulnerability to financial exploitation. If confirmed, this would suggest a novel mechanism leading to heightened financial exploitation risk in older adults. Development of predictive neural markers could facilitate increased vigilance and prevention. In this preliminary study, we sought to identify structural and functional brain differences associated with financial exploitation in older adults. METHODS: Financially exploited older adults (n = 13, 7 female) and a matched cohort of older adults

The Continuum of Disclosure: Exploring Factors Predicting Tentative Disclosure of Child Sexual Abuse Allegations During Forensic Interviews and the Implications for Practice, Policy, and Future Research.

When a child sexual abuse investigation ensues, many children do not disclose readily to professionals. Defining disclosure beyond the disclosure versus nondisclosure dichotomy is essential, yet little research exists on factors associated with a continuum of disclosure, including active and tentative disclosure. Through the coding of 196 forensic interviews using content analysis and subsequent regression analysis, findings suggest that children of color, children abused by adults, unintentional initial disclosure, and those lacking family support were more likely to tentatively disclose in t

[Evaluating extensive consciousness disturbance. Roulette or well-founded forensic diagnostics?].

The difficulties of experts to judge and evaluate so-called affect crimes are due to theoretical and conceptual shortcomings on the one hand and problems of reproducibility on the other. This study describes an attempt to set up diagnostic guidelines for such cases. A vulnerability/stress model was developed which integrates features from different areas: predisposition (including social perception, thinking, and problem solving), triggering conditions (mainly derived from stress theories and concepts), and the established Sass criteria (1983). The characteristics of these respective diagnosti

The cognitive competence of speakers with acquired dysarthria: judgements by doctors and speech and language therapists.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that listeners make negative attributions towards people with communication impairments. This appears to be the case for health care professionals as well as non-professional listeners. AIMS: This study extends this line of research to speakers with acquired dysarthria. These clients often complain that listeners treat them differently after the onset of their speech impairment. The study examines judgements of the cognitive status of speakers with acquired dysarthria made by health care professionals. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Doctors, speech and language therap

Six cases of patients with mental retardation who have antisocial personality disorder.

Evidence that antisocial personality disorder occurs in association with mental retardation is presented through case reports of six mildly to moderately retarded men who received a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder. The men were identified when referred by care providers for more thorough psychological and psychiatric assessments. Their histories were marked by thefts, rapes, multiple assaults, arson, and other predatory acts; a lack of remorse for such actions; criminal charges; and predisposing factors such as an impoverished family. Only one man had received the diagnosis of ant

Ratings of videotaped simulated patient interviews and four other methods of evaluating a psychiatry clerkship.

Ratings of videotaped interviews with simulated patients were compared with four other measures commonly used to evaluate medical students during their psychiatry clerkship. Intercorrelations among self-reported attitude change, written examination grade, and student rating of satisfaction with the clerkship suggest that each measures different processes. Low but significant correlations between preceptor ratings of interaction skills and data-gathering skills and process and content scores based on an end-of-course videotaped interview suggest that preceptor ratings and the videotaped intervi

Mental health help-seeking behaviour among migrant workers and migrant domestic workers in Singapore: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Migrant workers (MWs) and migrant domestic workers (MDWs) in Asia face elevated risks of mental health issues due to factors like long working hours, abuse, and family separation. In Singapore, despite established support systems, formal help-seeking remains low. This study aimed to investigate the mental health help-seeking behaviors, preferences, and perceived barriers and facilitators among MWs and MDWs in Singapore. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 involved a quantitative survey with 1,465 MWs and 1,462 MDWs from the six largest nationality gr

Examining the association of abortion history and current mental health: A reanalysis of the National Comorbidity Survey using a common-risk-factors model.

Using the US National Comorbidity Survey (NCS), Coleman, Coyle, Shuping, and Rue (2009) published an analysis indicating that compared to women who had never had an abortion, women who had reported an abortion were at an increased risk of several anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders. Here, we show that those results are not replicable. That is, using the same data, sample, and codes as indicated by those authors, it is not possible to replicate the simple bivariate statistics testing the relationship of ever having had an abortion to each mental health disorder when no factors were contr

The Classroom Climate and the Role of Teachers' Mentalized Affectivity: Mediation Through Job and Life Satisfaction.

The classroom climate is a multidimensional construct that embraces didactic practices, relational quality, shared norms, discipline, and a sense of belonging. A positive classroom climate conveys to students and teachers a feeling of safety and promotes a learning environment characterized by engagement, mutual respect, warmth, and a shared school vision. The current study, embracing the Prosocial Classroom Theoretical Model, aims to understand whether teachers' socio-emotional competencies in terms of mentalized affectivity would affect their perception of the classroom climate via subjectiv
