Stress mitigation mechanism of rice leaf microbiota amid atmospheric deposition of heavy metals.

Leaf microbiota have been extensively applied in the biological control of plant diseases, but their crucial roles in mitigating atmospheric heavy metal (HM) deposition and promoting plant growth remain poorly understood. This study demonstrates that elevated atmospheric HM deposition on rice leaves significantly shapes distinct epiphytic and endophytic microbiota across all growth stages. HM stress consistently leads to the dominance of epiphytic Pantoea and endophytic Microbacterium in rice leaves, particularly during the booting and filling stages. Leaf-bound HMs stimulate the differentiati

Phytoremediation of metals in oil sands process affected water by native wetland species.

Process affected water and other industrial wastewaters are a major environmental concern. During oil sands mining, large amounts of oil sands process affected water (OSPW) are generated and stored in ponds until reclaimed and ready for surface water discharge. While much research has focused on organics in process waters, trace metals at high concentrations may also pose environmental risks. Phytoremediation is a cost effective and sustainable approach that employs plants to extract and reduce contaminants in water. The research was undertaken in mesocosm scale constructed wetlands with plant…

Toxic Metals and Metalloids in Food: Current Status, Health Risks, and Mitigation Strategies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Exposure to toxic metals/metalloids, such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), through food consumption is a global public health concern. This review examines the contamination status of these metals/metalloids in food, assesses dietary intake across different populations, and proposes strategies to reduce metal/metalloid exposures throughout the food chain. RECENT FINDINGS: For the general population, dietary intake of metals/metalloids is generally lower than health-based guidance values. However, for vulnerable populations, such as infants, children, and pregna…

Association of Combined Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Metals with Chronic Kidney Disease.

Background: Exposure to environmental pollutants such as metals and Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) has become common and increasingly associated with a decrease in the estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), which is a marker often used to measure chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there are limited studies involving the use of both eGFR and the urine albumin creatinine ratio (uACR), which are more comprehensive markers to determine the presence of CKD and the complexity of pollutant exposures and response interactions, especially for combined metals and PFAS, which has no…

SXRF for Studying the Distribution of Trace Metals in the Pancreas and Liver.

Transition metals such as iron, copper and zinc are required for the normal functioning of biological tissues, whereas others, such as cadmium, are potentially highly toxic. Any disturbances in homeostasis caused by lack of micronutrients in the diet, pollution or genetic heredity result in malfunction and/or diseases. Here, we used synchrotron X-ray fluorescence, SXRF, microscopy and mice with altered functions of major antioxidant enzymes to show that SXRF may become a powerful tool to study biologically relevant metal balance in the pancreas and liver of mice models with disturbed glucose h…

Biomass and enzymatic activities of marine bacteria in the presence of multiple metals.

Marine environments are a repository for metals, and humans have enhanced this phenomenon over the years. Heavy metals are notoriously toxic due to their ability to biomagnify in the food chain and interact with cellular components. Nevertheless, some bacteria have physiological mechanisms that enable them to survive in impacted environments. This characteristic makes them important as biotechnological tools for environmental remediation. Thus, we isolated a bacterial consortium in Guanabara Bay (Brazil), a place with a long metal pollution history. To test the growth efficiency of this consor…

Prioritized regional management for antibiotics and heavy metals in animal manure across China.

High levels of antibiotics and heavy metals in animal manure pose a potential threat to both the ecological environment and public health. A regional knowledge of their distribution and risk assessment across China remains unclear. A dataset containing 4082 records covering a total of forty-two antibiotics and eight heavy metals was established for animal manure across China. The results showed that the residual concentration of antibiotics was in the order of tetracyclines > aminoglycosides > fluoroquinolones > macrolides > sulfonamides > β-lactams, and that of heavy metals is Zn > Cu > Cr > …

Bifunctional Amine- and Thiol-Modified Ti3C2Tx MXene for Trace Detection of Heavy Metals.

Surface functionalization of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, also known as MXenes, is a powerful approach for modification of their physical and chemical properties for new applications. In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis of a bifunctional Ti3C2Tx MXene modified with amine and thiol groups through a facile condensation reaction. We successfully employed the resulting NH2/SH-Ti3C2Tx MXene as a solid phase in the ultrasonic-assisted dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (d-μ-SPE) method for the analytical determination of heavy metals at tr…

Leaching Characteristics of Potentially Toxic Metals from Tailings at Lujiang Alum Mine, China.

To investigate the leaching characteristics and potential environmental effects of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) from alum mine tailings in Lujiang, Anhui Province, soaking tests and simulated rainfall leaching experiments were conducted for two types of slag. PTMs comprising Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Ni were detected in the slag. Cu and Cd contents exceeded the national soil risk screening values (GB 15618-2018). pH values of the two slag soaking solutions were negatively correlated with the solid:liquid ratio. pH values of the sintered slag soaking solutions with different solid:liquid ratios fi…

Genomic insights into Pseudoalteromonas sp. JSTW coping with petroleum-heavy metals combined pollution.

Worldwide marine compound contamination by petroleum products and heavy metals is a burgeoning environmental concern. Pseudoalteromonas, prevalently distributed in marine environment, has been proven to degrade petroleum and plays an essential role in the fate of oil pollution under the combined pollution. Nevertheless, the research on the reference genes is still incomplete. Therefore, this study aims to thoroughly investigate the reference genes represented by Pseudoalteromonas sp. JSTW via whole-genome sequencing. Next-generation sequencing technology unfolded a genome of 4,026,258 bp, data…

Cisplatin, environmental metals, and cardiovascular disease: an urgent need to understand underlying mechanisms.

Significantly increased risks of cardiovascular disease occur in testicular cancer survivors given cisplatin-based chemotherapy. The postulated mechanism of platinum-based chemotherapy's vascular toxicity has been thought secondary to its different early- and late- effects on vascular injury, endothelial dysfunction, and induction of a hypercoagulable state. We highlight for the first time the similarities between platinum-associated vascular adverse events and the vascular toxicity associated with other xenobiotic-metal contaminants. The vascular toxicity seen in large epidemiologic studies o

Investigation of Fertilizing Capacity of Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Sperm Exposed to Heavy Metals.

The objective of our study was to investigate the effects of heavy metals on the fertilizing capacity of exposed zebrafish sperm, on embryonic survival, and on occurrence of embryonic deformities following fertilization with exposed sperm. It is important to test heavy metals because they are well-known pollutants. Sperm of externally fertilizing species can get in contact with pollutants found in aquatic environment. Zebrafish sperm, despite its advantages, has seldom been used in in vitro toxicological studies and no reports are available regarding the fertilizing capacity of exposed sperm. …

[Isolation, identification and heavy metals biosorption of a lead and cadmium-tolerant strain].

Adding biological passivation agent during composting is one of the most effective ways to reduce the toxicity of heavy metals in contaminated livestock manure. To further improve biological passivation, we obtained a strain with high-heavy metal compounds tolerance to passivate heavy-metal contaminated manure and to characterize heavy-metal biosorption. High-tolerance microorganisms for lead and cadmium were isolated and screened from swine manure composting samples. The strain was identified by its morphology and molecular biology. After the influence of different pH, temperature and salt co…

Long-Term Accumulation of Metals in the Skeleton as Related to Osteoporotic Derangements.

The concentrations of metals in the environment are still not within the recommended limits as set by the regulatory authorities in various countries because of human activities. They can enter the food chain and bioaccumulate in soft and hard tissues/organs, often with a long half-life of the metal in the body. Metal exposure has a negative impact on bone health and may result in osteoporosis and increased fracture risk depending on concentration and duration of metal exposure and metal species. Bones are a long-term repository for lead and some other metals, and may approximately contain 90%…
