The ecological basis of parasite control: ticks and flies.

Tick and fly control programmes have undergone radical review in recent years. Insecticidal control measures are now often seen as a means of reducing target populations to a level sufficiently low for final eradication by biological or ecological techniques, the sterile male method (SIRM) being particularly favoured. As a preliminary, the new range of insecticidal application techniques includes insecticidal tags, bands, blouses, implants and pheromone baits. The final eradication programme could then involve the use of sterile flies or sterile hybrid ticks, for example. Immunization of cattl

Interrelationships of parasites of white-winged doves and mourning doves in Florida.

The parasites of indigenous populations of mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) in north and south Florida were compared with those of an introduced population of white-winged doves (z. asiatica) in south Florida. Thirty-two species of parasites including 5 protozoans, 7 nematodes, 2 trematodes, 2 cestodes, 7 acarines, 7 mallophagans, and 2 dipterans were found. Of these, 16 common to both species of doves. Mourning doves from north Florida showed a more diverse parasite fauna than did the white-winged or mourning dove populations from south Florida. Nematodes were the most common parasites in al

[Seasonal dynamics of population of the feather mite Monojoubertia microphylla (Astigmata: Analgoidea: Proctophyllodidae) in the chaffinch Fringilla coelebs].

The seasonal dynamics of the Monojoubertia microphylla micropopulations in different sex and age groups of the chaffinch Fringilla coelebs (Passeriformes: Fringillidae) have been studied during the nest and migration periods in the North-West of Russia. Three bird groups were determined within the chaffinch population during the study: adult males, adult females, immature chaffinches. Total number of bird specimens examined--353. In all chaffinch groups, the mean mite numbers and age structure of mite micropopulations were similar during the spring migration. The number of mites gradually incr

The "nuisance" sexually transmitted diseases: molluscum contagiosum, scabies, and crab lice.

Although molluscum contagiosum, scabies, and infestation by crab lice do not carry the requirements of partner notification or other long-term consequences, they are among the most commonly reported sexually transmitted disease. Molluscum contagiosum is a benign viral infection of the skin epidermal layer, most often transmitted by intimate skin-to-skin contact. The lesions often resolve spontaneously over time, but patient discomfort or social reasons may require destructive removal of the lesions. Scabies is caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. The victims continually itch, especially at ni

Psoroptes ovis Infestation Impairs Sexual Behavior and Reduces Testosterone Levels in Male Rabbits.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effects of chronic infestation with Psoroptes ovis on sexual behavior, testosterone levels, and physiological parameters in New Zealand male rabbits. P. ovis is a common ectoparasite in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus); however, its impact on physiological parameters and sexual behavior, relevant to reproduction and animal welfare, as well as experimental validity, remains poorly understood. METHODS: Twenty-three male rabbits were randomly assigned to control (n = 11) or experimentally infested (n = 12) groups and monitored for 77 days. Behavioral ass

First report of Chorioptes texanus (Acari: Psoroptidae) in Argentina.

In Argentina it has historically been assumed that Chorioptes bovis is the only species involved in clinical cases of bovine chorioptic mange. The aim of this communication is to present the first formal report based on morphometric studies of C. texanus in Argentina. Mange mites were collected through skin scrapings of areas with superficial dermatitis on adult dairy cows from three dairy farms located in Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and Córdoba provinces (Argentina). Clinical lesions were characterized by dermatitis located at the base of the tail and ischiorectal fossa, pruritus with hyperkeratosis

Prevalence and clinico-pathology of PSOROPTIC mange in buffaloes of the Amazon region.

Scabies is an important skin disease in several species of domestic and wild animals; however, few reports in Brazil have emphasized its occurrence in buffaloes. This article describes the epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects and diagnosis of psoroptic mange in buffaloes in a property in the municipality of Castanhal, PA, Amazon region. Of the 41 buffaloes examined, 38 males and females of the Murrah, Baio, Mediterranean and Carabao breeds and their crossbreeds, aged between 2 and 20 years, had a history of pruritus. Clinical examination was performed to map the lesions, skin scr

"Nobody here is an individual": Developing a place-based understanding of biosecurity for managing sheep scab on the Western Isles of Scotland.

Sheep scab causes economic losses and animal welfare problems and has proven difficult to control in the UK. Research has highlighted the importance of developing place-based approaches to understanding and controlling sheep scab. This paper builds on this literature through introducing the concept of marginality in the case study of managing sheep scab on the island of Lewis and Harris in the Scottish Western Isles. The paper also proposes steps for developing a place-based understanding of biosecurity. The research draws on interviews and workshops with crofters analysed using thematic analy

Let me know your name: a study of chigger mites (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) associated with the edible dormouse (Glis glis) in the Carpathian-Balkan distribution gradient.

Trombiculid mites were collected from the edible dormouse (Glis glis) within the Carpathian-Balkan distribution gradient of host species. Representatives of five genera (Leptotrombidium, Neotrombicula, Brunehaldia, Hirsutiella, Schoutedenichia) and 10 species of chiggers were discovered in the material, based on morphological and/or molecular data. Brunehaldia, new to the fauna of Greece, was recorded for the first time from the edible dormouse. Neotrombicula talmiensis was new to the fauna of Greece and Neotrombicula vulgaris was new to the fauna of North Macedonia. Successful amplification a

[Main parasitic skin disorders].

Cutaneous parasitic skin diseases are frequent in human pathology. There are few reliable epidemiological data on the prevalence and/or incidence of such diseases. Skin parasites are cosmopolitan but their global distribution is heterogenous; prevalence is especially high in subtropical and tropical countries. They are mainly due to arthropods (insects and mites). Many species of parasites are involved, explaining the diversity of their clinical signs. The most common are caused by ectoparasites such as scabies or pediculosis (head lice, body lice and pubic lice). Clinical signs may be related

The occurrence of Demodex spp. (Acari, Demodecidae) in the bank vole Myodes glareolus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) with data on its topographical preferences.

An examination of 16 bank voles from Poland (Pomerania) revealed the presence of two species of the family Demodecidae (Acari, Prostigmata), specific to the host. Demodex buccalis Bukva, Vitovec et Vlcek, 1985 was noted only in one bank vole, where 18 specimens were found: the prevalence of infestation being 6.3%. D. glareoli Hirst, 1919 was observed in 75% of the examined bank voles, in which were on average 5.1 specimens. Additionally, mites of the both species exhibited topical specificity--representatives of D. buccalis were found in the tissues of the tongue and oral cavity of the host, w

Allopsoroptoides galli n. g., n. sp., a new genus and species of feather mites (Acari: Analgoidea: Psoroptoididae) causing mange in commercially raised domestic chicken in Brazil.

A new feather mite, Allopsoroptoides galli n. g., n. sp. (Psoroptoididae: Pandalurinae), is described from the domestic chicken, Gallus gallus (Linnaeus) (Galliformes: Phasianidae), from Brazil. This is the first record of a representative of the feather mite family Psoroptoididae from an avian host of the order Galliformes. The new genus is closely related to the genus Cygnocoptes Fain & Bochkov, 2003 but clearly differs from the latter and all other genera of the family by the loss of four median pairs of hysteronotal setae (c1, d1, e1, and h1) in both sexes and by the unique shape of the ma

Ectoparasitic insects and mites on Yunnan red-backed voles (Eothenomys miletus) from a localized area in southwest China.

Ectoparasitic insects and mites on Yunnan red-backed voles (Eothenomys miletus) in Dali prefecture, Yunnan Province, southwest China, were studied between 2003 and 2004. In total, 34,389 individuals of 86 species of ectoparasitic insects (seven species of fleas and five species of sucking lice) and mites (23 species of gamasid mites and 51 species of chigger mites) were collected from 916 individual hosts. The diversity of ectoparasites on this single rodent species in such a small area was much higher than in previous reports, which concerned more host species and greater geographical areas.

Facial demodicosis.

A 24-year-old man presented with papulopustular, rosacea-like centro- facial lesions. Many Demodex mites were found in the affected area by microscopy of smears from pustules. This observation provides further evidence that demodicosis is a condition distinct from common rosacea. Considering clinical similarities of demodicosis, rosacea and some mycotic infections, direct examination to confirm the etiological agent is highly recommended prior to treatment.

Camel tick (Acari:Ixodidae) control with pour-on application of flumethrin.

The pyrethroid flumethrin (Bayticol) was tested in camels (Camelus dromedarius) as a pour-on for the control of the camel tick, Hyalomma dromedarii. Two, small, naturally infested camel herds, one heavily infested and the other lightly infested, each composed of eight head of animals, were used for this field trial. In each herd, four camels were randomly selected for treatment and the other four untreated camels were kept as controls. The heavily infested herd was treated with 2 ml 10kg-1 body weight per animal whereas the lightly infested herd was treated with 1 ml 10kg-1 body weight per ani
