Maximum voluntary molar bite force in subjects with malocclusion: multifactor analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to determine the maximum voluntary molar bite force (MVMBF) in relation to age, sex, lip competency, midline shifting, dental and skeletal malocclusion, overjet, overbite, and crowding. METHODS: One hundred Saudi patients with orthodontic malocclusion aged 14 to 25 years (51 male and 49 female patients) were investigated in this cross-sectional study. The baseline MVMBF on the right and left side was evaluated in all patients before commencing any orthodontic treatment. The MVMBF was registered with a portable occlusal force gauge in the first molar region …

Molar incisor hypomineralisation and dental anomalies: A random or real association?

BACKGROUND: Clinical observations suggest molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) may present with other dental conditions. AIMS: The study aimed to determine the prevalence and variety of dental anomalies in children presenting with MIH. DESIGN: A convenience sample of children referred to a UK dental hospital was recruited. Orthopantogram radiographs, taken as part of routine care, were assessed for dental anomalies. Two calibrated examiners reviewed the films separately and determined the presence and character of anomalies. RESULTS: Radiographs were obtained from 101 patients, with an ag…

[Advances in studies on distal molar movement with temporary anchorage devices].

Crowding and protrusion of the dentition are often the chief complaint of orthodontic patients. For patients with severe crowding or protrusion, orthodontist often improve their profile with premolar extraction treatment. However, for patients with mild crowding and protrusion, orthodontist usually achieve treatment objective using distal molar movement with temporary anchorage devices (TAD). The present article reviewed the advances in the use of TAD in total arch distalization, including therapeutic effect measured in three-dimensions, factors that affected distal movement and the stability …

Failure of eruption of first permanent molar teeth: a diagnostic challenge.

Ankylosis, mechanical and primary failure of eruption of molar teeth are rare and often difficult to distinguish between. All may have significant repercussions on the occlusion and successful management may involve invasive procedures. We present a case where an initial presentation characteristic of mechanical failure of eruption (ankylosis) of a first permanent molar tooth was excluded following a period of monitoring. Subsequent relief of crowding using a removable and then sectional fixed orthodontic appliance allowed spontaneous eruption of the tooth obviating the need for surgical inter…

Diagnosis and Management of Hidden Caries in a Primary Molar Tooth.

UNLABELLED: Hidden caries is a dentinal lesion beneath the dentinoenamel junction, visible on radiographs. A single report described this lesion in primary dentition. This case report describes a case of hidden caries in a mandibular second primary molar, misdiagnosed as malignant swelling. A 3-year-old white girl was referred to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry with a chief complaint of pain and extraoral swelling on the right side of the mandible for the last 3 months. She was earlier referred to the surgical department for biopsy of the lesion. Radiographic and computed tomography scan…

The first permanent molar: spontaneous eruption after a five-year failure.

BACKGROUND: It is rare for a first permanent molar (FPM) to temporarily exhibit clinical features of failure of eruption, followed by regeneration of full eruptive capacity 5 years later. Indeterminate failure of eruption (IFE) is a diagnosis of exclusion where the distinction between primary failure of eruption (PFE) and mechanical failure of eruption (MFE) is unclear, including patients too young to specify. CASE REPORT: An 11-year-old girl attended the orthodontic clinic at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust regarding an unerupted lower right FPM. Her medical and dental trauma history was u…

Molecular and histological characteristics of early triploid and partial molar pregnancies.

Molar pregnancy has the highest incidence of all gestational trophoblastic diseases. This is a heterogeneous group of diseases, composed of precancerous lesions and gestational trophoblastic tumours. The hydatidiform mole is characterised by varying degrees of proliferation of syncytiotrophoblastic and cytotrophoblastic cells and stromal oedema. Based on established morphological and cytogenetic criteria, molar pregnancy is divided into partial and complete. The risk of persistent trophoblastic disease is higher in complete moles compared with partial moles. The aim of this study was to assess…

Molar-incisor Malformation: Two Cases of a Newly Described Dental Anomaly.

Molar-incisor malformation (MIM) is a recently described dental developmental anomaly with marked manifestations in the primary second molars and permanent first molars and sometimes the permanent maxillary central incisors. To date, there are only two known manuscripts that present this anomaly. The major manifestations are severe coronal cervical constriction of the affected molars and significant under-development of one or more roots. These abnormalities may be detected during routine radiographic examination or present as altered or ectopic eruption or early exfoliation. The characteristi…

Concomitant Third Molar Removal During Sagittal Split Osteotomy of the Mandible.

It is described in textbook about management of third molar in orthognathic surgery that "ideally, the third molars should be removed 9 to 12 months before sagittal split osteotomy (SSO)." At the Chang Gung Craniofacial Center, the authors always remove mandibular third molars during SSO, because: removal of third molars at the same time of SSO could reduce psychological stress on patients by saving 1 surgical procedure under local anesthesia, better exposure of impacted third molars could be facilitated by sagittal split of buccal cortical plate, rigid fixation could be performed without diff…
