Molecular characterization of potential Plasmodium-Blocking Serratia spp. bacteria in field-caught malaria mosquito in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: One of the alternatives for controlling malaria is using mosquito symbiotic bacteria to reduce Plasmodium transmission. Species of Serratia, a genus of the Enterobacteriaceae family, have been isolated from the midgut of mosquitoes and are commonly found in water, soil and plant surfaces. These bacteria have shown great promise in blocking the transmission of Plasmodium in mosquitoes. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the genus Serratia within the Anopheles gambiae complex from Burkina Faso. METHODS: Mosquitoes were collected in three field sites located in Hou

A natural agonist of mosquito TRPA1 from the medicinal plant Cinnamosma fragrans that is toxic, antifeedant, and repellent to the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Plants produce various secondary metabolites that offer a potential source of novel insecticides and repellents for the control of mosquito vectors. Plants of the genus Cinnamosma are endemic to, and widely-distributed throughout, the island of Madagascar. The barks of these species are commonly used in traditional medicines for treating a wide range of maladies. The therapeutic nature of the bark is thought to be associated with its enrichment of pungent drimane sesquiterpenes, which elicit antifeedant and toxic effects in some insects. Here we test the hypothesis that a bark extract of Cinna

Wolbachia and mosquitoes: Exploring transmission modes and coevolutionary dynamics in Shandong Province, China.

Vector-borne diseases leave a large footprint on global health. Notable culprits include West Nile virus (WNV), St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV), and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), all transmitted by Culex mosquitoes. Chemical insecticides have been widely used to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Still, mosquitoes are becoming more and more resistant to most chemical insecticides which cause particular harm to the ecology. Wolbachia belongs to the family Ehrlichiaceae in the order Rickettsiales and is a matrilineally inherited endosymbiont present in 60% of insects in natur

Pilot longitudinal mosquito surveillance study in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and the first reports of Anopheles algeriensis Theobald, 1903 and Aedes hungaricus Mihályi, 1955 for Romania.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne viruses (moboviruses) are of growing importance in many countries of Europe. In Romania and especially in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (DDBR), mosquito and mobovirus surveillance are not performed on a regular basis. However, this type of study is crucially needed to evaluate the risk of pathogen transmission, to understand the ecology of emerging moboviruses, or to plan vector control programmes. METHODS: We initiated a longitudinal mosquito surveillance study with carbon dioxide-baited Heavy Duty Encephalitis Vector Survey traps at four sampling sites to ana

Anopheles stephensi Mosquitoes as Vectors of Plasmodium vivax and falciparum, Horn of Africa, 2019.

Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes, efficient vectors in parts of Asia and Africa, were found in 75.3% of water sources surveyed and contributed to 80.9% of wild-caught Anopheles mosquitoes in Awash Sebat Kilo, Ethiopia. High susceptibility of these mosquitoes to Plasmodium falciparum and vivax infection presents a challenge for malaria control in the Horn of Africa.

Application of quantitative PCR for quantization of densovirus genome.

Densovirus is classified as invertebrate virus belonging to the subfamily Densovirinae of Parvoviridae family. This group of viruses infects only insects and several densoviruses have been isolated from indigenous mosquitoes and mosquito cell lines. A number of mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are important vectors of viruses, which are the major causes of dengue hemorrhagic fever and yellow fever in humans. As densoviruses do not cause any pathology in humans, these viruses have been proposed to be a potential vector for use in biological control of mosquitoes and insec

A comparative analysis of the predictive influence of access to malaria messages on utilization of mosquito nets by under-five children in West Africa.

INTRODUCTION: In spite of the increase in the number of distributed mosquito nets, and awareness campaigns on its efficacy in malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa with high burden of malaria, there is a dearth of study on the effects of malaria messages on use of mosquito nets by under-five children (U5 children). Thus, the objectives of this study were to compare the use of mosquito nets by under-five children in four West African countries; and to investigate the predictive influence of exposure to malaria messages on the use of mosquito nets U5 children. METHOD: The data was from post-202

Artificial nighttime lighting impacts Plasmodium falciparum mature stage V gametocytes infectivity in Anopheles stephensi.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is one of the most important vector-borne diseases of humans with an estimated 241 million cases worldwide in 2020. As an urban and periurban mosquito species, Anopheles stephensi is exposed to artificial human stimuli like light that can alter many aspects of mosquito behaviour, physiology and metabolism. Therefore, fluctuations in the light environment may influence the host, parasite and/or mosquito biology and hence modulate risk for disease transmission. In this study, the effect of artifitial light at night on mosquito infectivity by Plasmodium falciparum during the f

A review on Wickerhamomyces anomalus yeast: a promising eco-friendly approach to biological controlof malaria.

Malaria is a deadly parasitic disease transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes. One of the most extensive malaria control measures proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), which has received better attention in recent years, is the biological control of Anopheles mosquitoes. In this concept, Wickerhamomyces anomalus yeast has received more attention from researchers in this field. In the present review, we have investigated the anti-malaria effect of Wickerhamomyces anomalous. In the present review, we searched PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Wil

Plastic responses of Plasmodium relictum to competent and non-competent mosquito bites.

Environmental unpredictability challenges the transmission success of vector-borne parasites like Plasmodium, whose fitness depends on synchronizing the production of transmission forms, called gametocytes, with vector availability. Although mosquito bites are known to trigger Plasmodium responses, it remains unclear whether parasites respond specifically to competent vectors or adopt a generalist strategy. We experimentally infected birds with the avian malaria parasite Plasmodium relictum and exposed them to bites from either a competent (Culex quinquefasciatus) or a non-competent (Anopheles

Mosquito-Borne Infections in International Travelers.

Mosquito-borne infections are a common cause of illness among returning travelers. Frontline healthcare providers should maintain a high degree of suspicion for these infections when evaluating ill returning travelers. This narrative review provides an overview of the most common mosquito-borne infections in travelers. We conducted a search of the medical literature for updates in the past 5 y. We reviewed resources of the US Centers for Disease Control (Yellow Book, Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices), and US Food and Drug Administration. Arboviral infections and malaria are the mos

Dehydration Alters Transcript Levels in the Mosquito Midgut, Likely Facilitating Rapid Rehydration following a Bloodmeal.

The mosquito midgut is an important site for bloodmeal regulation while also acting as a primary site for pathogen exposure within the mosquito. Recent studies show that exposure to dehydrating conditions alters mosquito bloodfeeding behaviors as well as post-feeding regulation, likely altering how pathogens interact with the mosquito. Unfortunately, few studies have explored the underlying dynamics between dehydration and bloodmeal utilization, and the overall impact on disease transmission dynamics remains veiled. In this study, we find that dehydration-based feeding in the yellow fever mosq

The Invasion and Encapsulation of the Entomopathogenic Nematode, Steinernema abbasi, in Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) Larvae.

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is of crucial concern to the public and veterinary health because of its vector role in transmission of several mosquito-borne diseases. Over the past decades, entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) have been used to control important agricultural insect pests and are considered to be effective against mosquitoes as well. The objectives of this study were to investigate the mosquitocidal effects of Steinernema abbasi to Ae. albopictus and the encapsulation processes of invading nematodes in the mosquito host. In this study, we found that S. abbasi was pat

Mosquito-borne diseases.

Despite centuries of control efforts, mosquito-borne diseases are flourishing worldwide. With a disproportionate effect on children and adolescents, these conditions are responsible for substantial global morbidity and mortality. Malaria kills more than 1 million children annually, chiefly in sub-Saharan Africa. Dengue virus has expanded its range over the past several decades, following its principal vector, Aedes aegypti, back into regions from which it was eliminated in the mid-20th century and causing widespread epidemics of hemorrhagic fever. West Nile virus has become endemic throughout

Mosquito surveillance for West Nile virus in southeastern Wisconsin--2002.

In 2001, West Nile virus (WNV) was identified among dead American crows and bluejays in five counties in southeastern Wisconsin. In response to the introduction of WNV, a pilot mosquito surveillance program was initiated in these five southeastern Wisconsin counties during the summer of 2002. Forty sites were selected for surveillance one night each week during a 17-week period. Mosquitoes were collected in carbon dioxide-baited light traps and gravid traps. During the study period 31,419 mosquitoes were collected, identified to species level and pooled into groups of up to 50 mosquitoes of li

Iron availability affects West Nile virus infection in its mosquito vector.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are responsible for transmission of viruses, including dengue, West Nile and chikungunya viruses. Female mosquitoes are infected when they blood-feed on vertebrates, a required step for oogenesis. During this process, mosquitoes encounter high iron loads. Since iron is an essential nutrient for most organisms, including pathogens, one of the defense mechanisms for the host includes sequestration of iron away from the invading pathogen. Here, we determine whether iron availability affects viral replication in mosquitoes. METHODS: To elucidate effect of iron availability

Starving the Beast: Limiting Coenzyme A Biosynthesis to Prevent Disease and Transmission in Malaria.

Malaria parasites must acquire all necessary nutrients from the vertebrate and mosquito hosts to successfully complete their life cycle. Failure to acquire these nutrients can limit or even block parasite development and presents a novel target for malaria control. One such essential nutrient is pantothenate, also known as vitamin B5, which the parasite cannot synthesize de novo and is required for the synthesis of coenzyme A (CoA) in the parasite. This review examines pantothenate and the CoA biosynthesis pathway in the human-mosquito-malaria parasite triad and explores possible approaches to

Hormone-dependent activation and repression of microRNAs by the ecdysone receptor in the dengue vector mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Female mosquitoes transmit numerous devastating human diseases because they require vertebrate blood meal for egg development. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play critical roles across multiple reproductive processes in female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. However, how miRNAs are controlled to coordinate their activity with the demands of mosquito reproduction remains largely unknown. We report that the ecdysone receptor (EcR)-mediated 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) signaling regulates miRNA expression in female mosquitoes. EcR RNA-interference silencing linked to small RNA-sequencing analysis reveals that EcR not

The effects of spinosad on Culex quinquefasciatus and three nontarget insect species.

Spinosad is a relatively new insecticide with a unique mode of action that is being evaluated for control of larval mosquitoes. Whereas a number of toxicological studies have measured effects of spinosad on various animals, few have been conducted on the effects of spinosad on nontarget, aquatic insect species. Such studies are important as these species might be found in the same environments as mosquito larvae targeted for control. A neighborhood pond was surveyed to find a representative species of mosquito as well as other common aquatic insects with which to examine susceptibility to spin
