Motion sickness and proprioceptive aftereffects following virtual environment exposure.

To study the potential aftereffects of virtual environments (VE), tests of visually guided behavior and felt limb position (pointing with eyes open and closed) along with self-reports of motion sickness-like discomfort were administered before and after 30 min exposure of 34 subjects. When post- discomfort was compared to a pre-baseline, the participants reported more sickness afterward (p < 0.03). The change in felt limb position resulted in subjects pointing higher (p < 0.038) and slightly to the left, although the latter difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.08). When findings…

Immersed false vertical room. A new motion sickness model.

We evaluated a new model of motion sickness--an enclosure decorated with visual cues to upright which was immersed either inverted or "front"-wall down, in Johnson Space Center's Weightless Environment Training Facility (WETF) pool. This "WETF False Vertical Room" (WFVR) was tested with 19 male and 3 female SCUBA diver subjects, aged 23 to 57, who alternately set clocks mounted near the room's 8 corners and made exaggerated pitch head movements. We found that (1) the WFVR test runs produced motion sickness symptoms in 56% and 36% of subjects in the room-inverted and room-front-down positions, …

Paradoxical motion in spondylolisthesis due to two-segment instability.

We report here a paradoxical motion in unstable spondylolytic spondylolisthesis: a more forward displacement of the L5 vertebral body on the sacrum on the standing extension view than on the standing flexion view. An axial loading through the inferior articular process of the posteriorly displaced L4 on extension appears to be the cause, while the instability in the two contiguous segments may be an important contributing factor.

Rehabilitation in limb deficiency. 1. Gait and motion analysis.

This self-directed learning module highlights new advances in this topic area. It is part of the chapter on rehabilitation in limb deficiency in the Self-Directed Physiatric Education Program for practitioners and trainees in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This article discusses normal gait, the influence of prosthetic alignment on amputee function, and the effects of prosthetic components on the metabolic costs and the biomechanical function of the amputee. The biomechanics of normal ambulation are presented as a background to enable the practitioner to gain an understanding of the typ

Head motion during positron emission tomography: is it significant?

High sensitivity for detecting local brain function differences from subsequent PET images acquired at different cerebral stimulation states requires interscan head motion to be minimized. This motion was measured by an optical lever system during scanning (130 min) of 15 subjects in a dual-dose injection study. Despite motion restriction by a face-mask restraint system, rotations in the sagittal and coronal planes (up to 4.1 degrees and 2.4 degrees, respectively) significantly influenced the measured means and variances of local metabolic differences between states. Hence, adjustments for hea…

Swallowing performance in patients with vocal fold motion impairment.

Twenty-seven patients with vocal fold motion impairment underwent detailed pharyngoesophagel manometry with a strain gauge assembly linked to a computer recorder. Nine were known to have lesions of the central vagal trunk or nucleus, 9 had recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy, and the remainder were idiopathic. The site of the lesion was a more important determinant of subjective swallowing performance than the position of the involved cord at laryngoscopy. Patients with central lesions had lower tonic and contraction upper esophageal sphincter (UES) pressures than 25 age-matched controls, su…

Risk factors for restricted motion after anterior cruciate reconstruction.

A retrospective review of 373 patients who had undergone anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction utilizing the central third of the patellar tendon was undertaken to identify those factors that placed a patient at risk for restricted postoperative motion (flexion < or = 125 degrees or flexion contracture > or = 10 degrees). Stepwise logistic regression analysis determined that the variables most strongly correlated with restricted final range of motion (ROM) were open surgery (P = .0008) and reconstruction performed < or = 7 days after the initial injury (P = .004). Age, associated men…

Psychophysiological aspects of increasing resistance to space motion sickness.

One of the actual and difficulty solved problems of the adaptation period to microgravitation is space motion sickness (MS) that has the negative influence on well-being and performance of crewmembers in the initial and highly crucial phase of the orbital flight. Among the prophylactic measures for decrease of the unfavourable influence of space MS the preflight training is of great importance, and its role in perspective undoubtedly will grow in connection with increase of the number of crewmembers. During the last years several authors received experimental materials evidenced that as a base…

Physiologic motion after vocal cord reinnervation: a preliminary study.

This study attempted to reestablish physiologic vocal cord motion, rather than synkinesis, to a reinnervated vocal cord. One mongrel dog underwent a division and reanastomosis of the anterior branch of the right recurrent laryngeal nerve and simultaneous separation and reimplantation of a posterior division nerve-muscle pedicle into the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle. After 21 weeks, spontaneous physiologic vocal cord movement and electromyographic (EMG) activity were recorded during respiratory obstruction and laryngeal mechanical stimulation. Acoustic measures and histologic data are also p…

Motion sickness. Helping patients tolerate the ups and downs.

The sensory conflict theory provides a useful framework for understanding motion sickness. Few modifications of this model have been proposed since its publication. The weak link in the study of motion sickness has been the failure to delineate the anatomic structures that correspond to the model's components. Effective pharmacotherapy is available for treatment of motion sickness. The choice should be based on the need to provide prophylaxis for or treatment of symptoms and on the side effect profile of the drug.

Electrogastrograms during motion sickness in fasted and fed subjects.

Seven human volunteers were subjected to stressful Coriolis stimulation (rotating chair) either during the fasted state or following the ingestion of yogurt (6 oz). Subjects tested after yogurt reached a Malaise-III (M-III) endpoint of motion sickness after significantly (p less than 0.01) fewer head movements than subjects tested in the fasted state. Surface electrogastrogram (EGG) recordings at M-III were similar for both dietary states and consisted of a brief period of tachygastria, followed by a period of low amplitude EGG waves. Ingestion of yogurt enhanced susceptibility to motion sickn…

Hormonal status and fluid electrolyte metabolism in motion sickness.

In the first experimental series, 10 healthy male test subjects with a high susceptibility to motion sickness showed a significant increase of ACTH, cortisol, STH, prolactin, ADH, aldosterone concentrations, and plasma renin activity after vestibular tests. The 10 subjects with a moderate susceptibility exhibited a still higher increase of the hormones, except plasma renin. The 8 test subjects with a low susceptibility displayed a considerable increase in ACTH, cortisol, and STH after vestibular stimulation. In the second experimental series, the increase of STH, cortisol, ADH, aldosterone and…

Neuropsychiatric observations of proprioceptive sensitivity in motion sickness susceptibility.

The assessment of motion sickness susceptibility is still an unsolved problem, due in part to its unclear etiology. We studied 16 referred patients suffering from "idiopathic motion sickness" and 4 pilots suffering from motion airsickness. All clinical and neurological tests proved negative, including electroencephalograms, electronystagmograms, Doppler studies, and computerized tomography of the brain. Cervical spine X-rays and personality characteristics were assessed. Simultaneously, 35 asymptomatic pilots and pilot applicants were studied as controls. Both groups were exposed to cross-coup…

Regional left ventricular wall motion in pacing induced angina.

Left ventricular cineangiograms (30 degrees right anterior oblique projection) and high fidelity left ventricular pressure were recorded at … resting regions were identified. The commonest (11 regions) was delayed onset of inward endocardial motion during systole which was manifest by diagonal contour lines on the contour plot. Six regions (five with associated delay in onset of inward motion) showed resting hypokinesis. Angina was associated with the development of 19 new regions of abnormal …

Computer simulation of human mitral valve mechanics and motion.

The human mitral valve is the left atrio-ventricular valve which is composed of several components including leaflets, chordae tendineae, papillary muscles, and the valve annulus. Any or all of these components may fail and contribute to various valvular diseases including mitral regurgitation and mitral valve prolapse. A computer simulation of mitral valve mechanics and motion was written in BASIC for micro-computers. This program allows valvular geometry and biomechanical parameters to be varied and records time varying motion of the valve and all components during systole including a graphi…

Afterimage-like effects in the motion-sensitive neuron H1.

A powerful effect resembling an afterimage is demonstrated on the pathway to the motion-sensitive neuron H1. This effect is independent of the locally generated gain control described in an earlier paper (Maddess & Laughlin 1985, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. B 225, 251). The afterimage, produced across the eye by a stationary pattern, causes the sensitivity to movement to be different according to the local stimulus history, and the effects of low-contrast (0.1) patterns, presented for as little as a few hundred milliseconds, remain for up to 2 s. Moving patterns interact with the afterimage to modulat…
