Freely moving pupillometry and awake vestibular recordings capture acute vestibular-autonomic signatures of motion sickness in mice.

Motion sickness (MS) in rodents is commonly inferred from behavioral and autonomic readouts, but objective measures capturing ocular and vestibular involvement remain limited. Here we implemented a multimodal framework combining freely moving pupillometry, awake vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), awake ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs), and behavioral assays to characterize MS-like responses in mice. We further applied vestibular habituation training (VHT) to test whether these endpoints track adaptive recovery. Rotational stimulation induced a reproducible MS-like phenotype, i…

Prediction of eyestrain and motion sickness based on eye parameters during exposure to a visual flicker stimulus.

This study investigates moving stimuli and the ensuing eye-movements in the genesis of motion sickness. When confronted with challenging visual stimulation, can oculomotor parameters reliably predict visually induced motion sickness (VIMS)? We used an eye-tracker and assessed subjective eyestrain to examine how these parameters vary as a function of specific characteristics of an abstract spatiotemporal flicker stimulus and whether they predict VIMS. Twenty-four participants viewed various flicker conditions presented on a desktop monitor, differing in frequency, spatial stimulus offset, and m…

Quantifying the Relative Contributions of Exposure Time, ECG, GSR, and Vibration-Derived Features for Motion Sickness Prediction.

Motion sickness is expected to become more prevalent in road transportation as passengers increasingly engage in non-driving-related activities under automated driving. This study quantified the relative contributions of exposure time (discrete trial index), physiological signals, and vibration-derived features to motion sickness prediction under controlled road vibration. Thirty-nine participants were exposed to four road profiles reproduced on a motion simulator while electrocardiography (ECG), galvanic skin response (GSR), triaxial head acceleration, and motion sickness ratings were recorde…

Detection of virtual reality motion sickness based on EEG using asymmetry of entropy and cross-frequency coupling.

The existence of Virtual Reality Motion Sickness (VRMS) is a key factor restricting the further development of the VR industry, and the premise to solve this problem is to be able to accurately and effectively detect its occurrence. In view of the current lack of high-accuracy and effective detection methods, this paper proposes a VRMS detection method based on entropy asymmetry and cross-frequency coupling value asymmetry of EEG. First of all, the EEG of the four selected pairs of electrodes on the bilateral brain are subjected to Multivariate Variational Mode Decomposition (MVMD) respectivel…

Increased Perception of Head Tilt to Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation Correlates to Motion Sickness Susceptibility in Vestibular Migraine.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine is associated with vertigo, persistent swaying, tilting, and disorientation, which suggests a heightened sensitivity of the neural mechanisms subserving spatial orientation. Whether a heightened sense of motion to vestibular stimulation in vestibular migraine is associated with sensitivity to visual motion (visual dependency) or physical motion (motion sickness susceptibility) is unclear. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore whether a heightened sense of self-motion sensitivity in vestibular migraine is associated with visual dependency or motion sickn…

Assessing Passengers' Motion Sickness Levels Based on Cerebral Blood Oxygen Signals and Simulation of Actual Ride Sensation.

(1) Background: After motion sickness occurs in the ride process, this can easily cause passengers to have a poor mental state, cold sweats, nausea, and even vomiting symptoms. This study proposes to establish an association model between motion sickness level (MSL) and cerebral blood oxygen signals during a ride. (2) Methods: A riding simulation platform and the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technology are utilized to monitor the cerebral blood oxygen signals of subjects in a riding simulation experiment. The subjects' scores on the Fast Motion sickness Scale (FMS) are determi…

Toward Predicting Motion Sickness Using Virtual Reality and a Moving Platform Assessing Brain, Muscles, and Heart Signals.

Motion sickness (MS) and postural control (PC) conditions are common complaints among those who passively travel. Many theories explaining a probable cause for MS have been proposed but the most prominent is the sensory conflict theory, stating that a mismatch between vestibular and visual signals causes MS. Few measurements have been made to understand and quantify the interplay between muscle activation, brain activity, and heart behavior during this condition. We introduce here a novel multimetric system called BioVRSea based on virtual reality (VR), a mechanical platform and several biomed…

Comparing the Differences in Brain Activities and Neural Comodulations Associated With Motion Sickness Between Drivers and Passengers.

It is common to believe that passengers are more adversely affected by motion sickness than drivers. However, no study has compared passengers and drivers' neural activities and drivers experiencing motion sickness (MS). Therefore, this study attempts to explore brain dynamics in motion sickness among passengers and drivers. Eighteen volunteers participated in simulating the driving winding road experiment while their subjective motion sickness levels and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were simultaneously recorded. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) was employed to isolate MS-related ind…

Instability of the perceived world while watching 3D stereoscopic imagery: A likely source of motion sickness symptoms.

Watching 3D content using a stereoscopic display may cause various discomforting symptoms, including eye strain, blurred vision, double vision, and motion sickness. Numerous studies have reported motion-sickness-like symptoms during stereoscopic viewing, but no causal linkage between specific aspects of the presentation and the induced discomfort has been explicitly proposed. Here, we describe several causes, in which stereoscopic capture, display, and viewing differ from natural viewing resulting in static and, importantly, dynamic distortions that conflict with the expected stability and rig…

Assessment of otolith function using cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in individuals with motion sickness.

The involvement of otolith organs in motion sickness has long been debated; however, equivocal findings exist in literature. The present study thus aimed at evaluating the otolith functioning in individuals with motion sickness. Cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials were recorded from 30 individuals with motion sickness, 30 professional drivers and 30 healthy individuals. The results revealed no significant difference in latencies and amplitudes between the groups (p>0.05). Nonetheless, thresholds were significantly elevated and inter-aural asymmetry ratio significantly hig…

Integration of vestibular and emetic gastrointestinal signals that produce nausea and vomiting: potential contributions to motion sickness.

Vomiting and nausea can be elicited by a variety of stimuli, although there is considerable evidence that the same brainstem areas mediate these responses despite the triggering mechanism. A variety of experimental approaches showed that nucleus tractus solitarius, the dorsolateral reticular formation of the caudal medulla (lateral tegmental field), and the parabrachial nucleus play key roles in integrating signals that trigger nausea and vomiting. These brainstem areas presumably coordinate the contractions of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles that result in vomiting. However, it is unclear
