Exercise and fatigue.

Physical exercise affects the equilibrium of the internal environment. During exercise the contracting muscles generate force or power and heat. So physical exercise is in fact a form of mechanical energy. This generated energy will deplete the energy stocks within the body. During exercise, metabolites and heat are generated, which affect the steady state of the internal environment. Depending on the form of exercise, sooner or later sensations of fatigue and exhaustion will occur. The physiological role of these sensations is protection of the exercising subject from the deleterious effects

New Zealand blackcurrant extract has no effect on physiological and cardiovascular responses during low-intensity sustained intermittent isometric contractions in men.

PURPOSE: Intake of anthocyanin-rich supplements such as New Zealand blackcurrant (NZBC) extract for 7 days showed beneficial effects on cardiovascular function at rest and during moderate and high-intensity exercise. The effects of 4- and 7-day intake of 600 mg of NZBC extract on cardiovascular function, femoral artery diameter, muscle force, muscle activity and muscle fatigue during low-intensity sustained intermittent isometric contractions were examined. METHODS: Fifteen healthy males (age: 25 ± 6 years, height: 180 ± 7 cm, body mass: 82 ± 8 kg) visited the laboratory on five occasions (fa…

Investigation of respiratory muscle strength and its influence on exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Adequate respiratory muscle strength is required to meet the increased ventilatory demand during physical activities. However, it is not well known whether respiratory muscle strength is impaired in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between respiratory muscle strength and exercise capacity, quality of life, physical activity level, and fatigue in IPF patients. METHODS: The study comprised 30 individuals with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and 30 healthy controls. Maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP)

[Two cases of post-poliomyelitis muscular atrophy].

We report two males with progressive post-poliomyelitis muscular atrophy (PPMA) who developed slowly progressive weakness and atrophy in the previously unaffected muscles 50 years after acute poliomyelitis. Case 1 is a 61-year-old male who had suffered from poliomyelitis at the age of 3 years. After recovery from acute symptoms, paralysis remained in the right face, left upper extremity and right lower extremity. Paralysis had remained unchanged until the age of 55 years, when he felt increased fatigue and progressive muscle weakness of all extremities. Neurological examination revealed muscle

Changes in dynamic and kinematic properties of saccades in ocular myasthenia following intravenous immunoglobulin treatment.

The dynamics and kinematics of saccades in a patient with severe ocular myasthenia were studied before and after treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). Before therapy, horizontal saccades were hypometric, but faster than similar-sized saccades made by normal subjects. During a 5-minute test period, saccades decreased in size (fatigue effect), but remained faster than those of controls. Listing's plane of the eye with greater ophthalmoplegia was increased in thickness. After IVIG treatment, the range of eye movements improved, but saccades remained faster than those of controls. Also

Paralytic vs. "nonparalytic" polio: distinction without a difference?

Nonparalytic polio (NPP) is commonly thought to be synonymous with "abortive polio," in which the poliovirus neither entered the central nervous system nor damaged neurons. Described are two epidemic illness-"The Summer Grippe" and Iceland disease-apparently caused by a low virulence but neuropathic type 2 poliovirus. Studies show that neuronal lesions in the brain and spinal cord and muscle weakness were common in NPP, and epidemiologic studies document late-onset weakness and fatigue in 14% to 42% of NPP survivors. These findings indicate that clinicians should not require a history of paral

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Screening to Allow Detection of Pathogenic Mitochondrial DNA Variants in Individuals with Unexplained Abnormal Fatigue: A Preliminary Study.

Unexplained abnormal fatigue is characterized by chronic fatigue persisting for at least six months and not sufficiently explained by any recognized medical condition. In this pilot study, twelve individuals with abnormal fatigue remaining unexplained after thorough screening were investigated using a near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy handgrip test. Four of them were found to have an abnormal oxygen extraction pattern similar to participants with documented mitochondrial myopathy. In three of the four individuals, diverse mitochondrial abnormalities were documented by spectrophotometric, immuno

Decreased postexercise facilitation of motor evoked potentials in patients with cerebellar degeneration.

We studied the effects of exercise on motor evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in 18 normal (control) subjects and 11 medication-free patients with cerebellar degeneration. Subjects performed repeated sets of isometric exercise of the extensor carpi radialis muscle until the muscle fatigued (subject became unable to maintain half maximal force). MEPs were recorded before and after each exercise set and for up to 30 minutes after the last set. The mean amplitude of MEPs recorded from the resting muscle immediately after each exercise set was 218% of the…

Potential mechanisms underlying the effect of walking exercise on cancer-related fatigue in cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common and debilitating long-term side effect of cancer and its treatment. While exercise has been shown to effectively reduce CRF, the underlying mechanisms are not fully clear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the effects of a 4-month walking exercise program on fatigue severity and to explore potential underlying physiological, behavioral, and psychological mechanisms of action. METHODS: We included 27 cancer survivors (59 ± 15 years, 37% female) with variable cancer diagnoses who were at least moderately fatigued and finished treat

[A case of acute renal failure secondary to late-onset McArdle's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Mc Ardles disease, also known as Type V glycogen storage disease, is a rare deficiency of the enzyme glycogen phosphorylase in muscle cells, inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. In the absence of this enzyme, muscles cannot break down glycogen during exercise, so in patients affected by McArdles disease even moderate physical activity produces cramps, pain and fatigue. Anaerobic activity leads to severe fixed contractures and rhabdomyolisis with myoglobinuria and raised serum creatine-kinase, which, in turn, can lead to acute renal failure. Disease onset is usually in early
