EXPERIMENTAL LIVER NECROSIS. V. THE FATS AND LIPOIDS.

1. Changes which occur in the fat content of the liver of dogs receiving haemotoxic serum bear no relation to the degree of necrosis produced by this serum. 2. An increase in water content of the tissue seldom occurs, but where present is due to the nitrogenous autolysis rather than to the deposition of fat. 3. The appearance of fat in the cell is not associated with a decomposition of the proteid component of the compound fats, but rather to a simple splitting off of the fatty radical. This is shown by the slight variations occurring in the percentage nitrogen of the fat-free substance. 4. Th…

Avascular Necrosis Secondary to Traumatic Posterior Hip Dislocation.

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis of the femoral head, a known long-term complication following traumatic posterior hip dislocation, can result in femoral head collapse, osteochondral defects, and eventual posttraumatic osteoarthritis. This condition is especially problematic in young, active patients for whom total hip arthroplasty survivorship is a concern. Biologic treatments are therefore preferable to delay or avoid total hip arthroplasty. CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old male developed progressive left hip pain after a posterior dislocation sustained while playing football. The hip was emergentl…

[Acute esophageal necrosis from the emergency physician's perspective].

Acute esophageal necrosis, also known as "black esophagus" or Gurvits syndrome, is a rare but severe cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. It mainly affects elderly, frail and polymorbid patients, often in the setting of systemic low-flow states or severe metabolic disorders. The clinical presentation is dominated by hematemesis or melena. Diagnosis relies on endoscopy, which reveals circumferential black discoloration of the distal third of the esophagus, stopping at the gastroesophageal junction. Management is primarily symptomatic and etiological, combining hemodynamic stabilization, ac…
