It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that nutrition services provided by registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs), are essential components of comprehensive care for all people with developmental disabilities and special health care needs. Nutrition services should be provided throughout life in a manner that is interdisciplinary, family-centered, community-based, and culturally competent. People with developmental disabilities and special health care needs frequently have nutrition concerns, including growth alterations (failure to thrive, obe

The optimum number of units of blood and the associated number of blood donors required to meet a given population's needs remain undetermined globally. Typically, a whole blood donation rate of ten donations per 1000 population, at a minimum, is necessary to meet a country's blood needs. This rate is attributed to a WHO recommendation that 1% of a given country's population should donate blood to ensure a blood supply that is sufficient to meet clinical needs. This often cited metric was first referenced in a 1971 WHO report, yet neither supporting data or references were provided, suggesting

Living kidney donors (LKDs) undertake a complex and multifaceted journey when pursuing donation and have several unmet healthcare needs. A comprehensive understanding of these needs across their entire donation trajectory can help develop a patient-centered care model. We conducted a scoping review to synthesize empirical evidence, published since 2000, on LKDs' experiences with healthcare from when they decided to pursue donation to postdonation care, and what they reported as their care needs. We categorized them according to the 8 Picker principles of patient-centered care. Of the 4514 arti

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory rheumatic diseases can prevent consequential damage such as permanently limited mobility and joint or organ damage. Simultaneously, there is an increasing deficit in medical care owing to the lack of rheumatological capacity. Rural regions are particularly affected.
OBJECTIVES: The available unconfirmed diagnoses of the study Rheuma-VOR were analysed regarding another definitive inflammatory rheumatic disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The returned questionnaires of the rheumatologists participating in Rheuma-VOR were screened for defini

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a life-long illness that is increasing in prevalence and incidence, disproportionately among young adults. The diagnosis often coincides with emerging adulthood, a critical developmental stage when young adults face formative life changes such as independent living, finalization of education and career path, redefining relationships with parents, the pursuit of romantic relationships, marriage, and parenthood. A diagnosis of IBD during emerging adulthood can have significant impacts on these domains.
AREAS COVERED: Current research supports in

We compared 53 patients with Dengue shock syndrome (DSS) who received preventive transfusions with 53 who did not. Significant differences in the development of pulmonary edema and length of hospitalization (P<.05) and none in hemorrhage (P=.136) were observed. Preventive transfusions did not produce sustained improvements in the coagulation status in DSS.

New guidance on assessing the health of homeless people features an assessment template for community nurses working with this group. It includes key questions on general physical health, mental health, long-term conditions, substance use, sexual health and housing. It also incorporates template care plans for use by both nurses and patients, and includes Read Codes for practice-based settings. This article looks at the impact homelessness can have on health, and summarises the Queen's Nursing Institute's guidance on assessing the healthcare needs of homeless people.

Currently, South Asia accounts for a quarter of the world population, yet it already claims ≈60% of the global burden of heart disease. Besides the epidemics of type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease already faced by South Asian countries, recent studies suggest that South Asians may also be at an increased risk of heart failure (HF), and that it presents at earlier ages than in most other racial/ethnic groups. Although a frequently underrecognized threat, an eventual HF epidemic in the densely populated South Asian nations could have dramatic health, social and economic consequen

PURPOSE: The growing population of breast cancer survivors (BCS) underscores the need to address ongoing challenges that persist beyond active treatment. This scoping review aimed to systematically map the unmet needs of BCS and inform the development of an evidence-based survivorship care framework.
METHODS: A systematic search of databases identified 13,401 studies, of which 170 met the inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis and descriptive statistics to categorize unmet needs across studies.
RESULTS: Six major categories of unmet needs were identified: p

BACKGROUND: Infertility imposes significant physical and psychological burdens on affected individuals. As mobile health (mHealth) tools become increasingly widespread, understanding the specific health management needs of infertile patients is essential for designing effective, patient-centered digital interventions. This study aimed to assess these needs and provide a foundation for future mHealth system development. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2023 and January 2024 at a women’s and children’s medical center in southwestern China. Infertile patients who me

PURPOSE: The sociodental model integrates clinical assessment, perceived impacts of malocclusion on quality of life, and behavioural propensity when prioritising orthodontic treatment. This study compares the effect of using different instruments to measure impact-related need on the assessment of orthodontic treatment need based on the sociodental framework.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 206 Malaysian adolescents (age: 11-18 years) were screened in orthodontic clinics to identify those with normative need, oral impacts due to malocclusion, and having high and medium-t

INTRODUCTION: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic autoimmune disease with multiorgan involvement.
OBJECTIVE: Identify preferences and priorities among patients and health care professionals regarding care for SSc patients in The Netherlands. Develop ideas to improve quality of care.
METHODS: A structured approach was followed to collect information from different perspectives to prepare a working conference. Qualitative and quantitative data from patients (n = 650), rheumatologists (n = 167), nurses (n = 51), and health professionals (n = 85) from regional centers and university hospitals

OBJECTIVES: People with dementia often have various unmet care needs across physical, psychological, environmental, and social domains. There's a need to explore the association between domains of unmet needs and characteristics of people with dementia. The aim of this paper was to describe the domains of unmet and met needs among community-dwelling people living with dementia, focusing on the home environment, physical, psychological, and social areas, and to identify sociodemographic, clinical, and health-related parameters associated with unmet needs.

BACKGROUND: Spirituality is an important component of palliative care, yet research focusing on adolescents remains in its early stages, with few studies addressing the spiritual needs of this group. The study aimed to integrate the spiritual needs of adolescents with cancer and provide a reference for formulating personalised spiritual care plans for this demographic.
METHODS: Eleven databases (Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Information Resources System, China Biology Medicine, Web of Science, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO) were s

PURPOSE: We examined whether patient-rated or clinician-rated needs are more strongly associated with perceived psychosocial disability (PPD) and subjective quality of life (SQOL) of schizophrenia patients, beyond symptom severity.
METHODS: Hierarchical regression analyses were computed to test patient and clinician-rated unmet and met needs (estimated by eighty-two patient-clinician pairs) as predictors of PPD and SQOL above and beyond demographics and psychopathology. Needs, symptomatology, PPD and SQOL were estimated using Camberwell Assessment of Need (CAN), PANSS, WHODAS 2.0 and WHOQOL-B

BACKGROUND: Effective communication between pharmacists and patients is essential and improves health outcomes. Simulated patients (SPs) are trained to reproduce real-life situations and can help pharmacy students to develop and adapt their communication skills in a safe, learner-centred environment. The aim of this research was to explore how SP and pharmacy student role-play supports communication training.
METHODS: A mixed methods realist evaluation approach was adopted to test an initial theory relating to SP role-play for pharmacy students. The intervention tested involved complex commun
