BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis (NNS) is a known cause of morbidity and mortality especially in developing countries. The global resistance scourge may worsen the management outcomes of NNS. This study aims to determine the current profile of bacteriological agents of NNS, their resistance status and associated mortality in our setting.
METHODS: Neonates numbering 480 presenting with clinical features of sepsis and /or risk for sepsis were consecutively recruited into the study and had their blood specimens collected at admission. Blood samples were logged into BacT/ALERT® and then inoculated ont…

The fear of missing sepsis episodes in neonates frequently leads to indiscriminate use of antibiotics, and prescription program optimization … d cultures (BCs) are considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of sepsis: positive BC rates in neonatal sepsis workups have been reported as low, implying that the majority of treated neonates may receive unneeded drugs. New identification methods can increase the accuracy of BCs and guide antibiotic de-escalation. To date, after 36-48 h, if BCs are negative …

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants and critically ill neonates are predisposed to nosocomial infections as sepsis. Moreover, these infants acquire commensal bacteria, which might become potentially harmful. On-ward transmission of these bacteria can cause outbreaks.
AIM: To report the findings of a prospective surveillance of bacterial colonization and primary sepsis in preterm infants and neonates.
METHODS: The results of the surveillance of bacterial colonization of the gut and the respiratory tract, targeting meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VR

This prospective observational study was carried out in India among 100 women with preterm pre-labour rupture of membranes (pPROM) between 26(0/7)-33(0/7) weeks on expectant management in order to correlate early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS) with various features of chorioamnionitis. The incidence of pPROM during the study period of 1.5 years was 7%. The mean gestation at pPROM was 30(6/7) ± 1.8 weeks and at delivery was 32(1/7) ± 1 weeks. Features of chorioamnionitis in the form of clinical, microbiological, histological or a combination of these were observed in 70/100 women. Clinical chorio…

UNLABELLED: Improved obstetrical management and evidence-based peripartum antimicrobial therapy in the last decades reduce the frequency of early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS) and improve the outcome. The spectrum of the microrganisms is different according to regions, countries and periods of time. Appropriate diagnosis and treatment improve the outcome. However dissociation often occurs between clinical manifestation, laboratory and microbiological findings.
AIMS: To determine the incidence of neonatal bacteremia in our hospital, to identify the spectrum of organisms from positive blood cult…

Fungal infections are increasingly frequent causes of neonatal sepsis (NS). This study examined the predictive value of the combined evaluation of the C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) responses for differentiating fungal and bacterial aetiologies in patients with NS. From January to September 2007, neonates who were diagnosed with NS and had their CRP and IL-6 levels measured were selected. Based on their blood culture results, the neonates were divided into two groups: group of fungal sepsis (FS) and group of bacterial sepsis (BS). FS included 14 Candida albicans and one non-…

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the impact of a risk-based approach to group B Streptococcus (GBS) prophylaxis on the rates of early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS).
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study of neonates born at a tertiary-care hospital from 1990 to 1996 was performed. Cases of EONS were identified among neonates born in a period without GBS prophylaxis (1990-1992) and compared with those born in a period with GBS prophylaxis (1993-1996). The antibiotic susceptibility data on each organism isolated in the blood culture were obtained.
RESULTS: In the period without prophylaxis, 99 cases …

Neonatal sepsis accounts for a substantial proportion of newborn mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), yet the region remains under-represented in global research output. While bibliometric analyses of neonatal sepsis exist globally, none have mapped 25-year trends, funding sources, and collaboration networks specific to SSA. Understanding these patterns is critical to address research inequity and guide evidence-based investment. We conducted a bibliometric analysis of publications on neonatal sepsis in SSA indexed in Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection from 2000 to 2025. A comprehensi…

Prolonged empirical antibiotic exposure in neonates is associated with adverse outcomes and antimicrobial resistance. Serial C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) measurements may support earlier discontinuation, but neonatal protocols remain heterogeneous. BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis (NS) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Gram-negative bacteria are increasingly predominant and associated with severe disease. In Jordan, data on Gram-negative NS are limited, highlighting the need for local evidence to guide early detection and treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence, risk factors, bacterial profile, and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Gram-negative NS in a tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Jordan.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study reviewed 4,804 blood cu…

Neonatal sepsis (NS) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in both preterm and term infants; early-onset NS (EONS) occurs in newborns within the first 72 h of life. Cytokines are messengers with low molecular weight that are produced by macrophages and lymphocytes in response to antigenic stimulations or products of inflammation. Different interleukins (IL) have higher values in EONS, when detected from peripheral venous blood. This review aims to analyze if the cytokines determined from the umbilical cord blood (UCB) of newborns may help in the rapid and accurate diagnosis of EONS in ne…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Neonatal sepsis is a major cause of neonatal mortality worldwide. It remains a detrimental bottleneck to the WHO goal of eradicating preventable deaths for children below 5 years of age by 2030. Though the risk factors for adverse clinical outcomes for neonatal sepsis have been widely studied there is no universal consensus. Length of hospitalization is considered an indicator for adverse clinical outcome of neonatal sepsis. Markedly, literature is scarce regarding the drivers of extended hospitalization for neonatal sepsis in Kenya.
METHODOLOGY: This study determined the…

Early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS), a serious infection in newborns within 3 days, is challenging to diagnose. The current methods often lack accuracy, leading to unnecessary antibiotics or delayed treatment. This study investigates the role of the frozen section examination of placental membranes and umbilical cord (FSMU) to improve EONS diagnosis in the daily lab practice. This retrospective study reviewed data from 59 neonates with EONS risk factors who underwent FSMU according to our institutional protocol. Concordance between the FSMU and the Final Pathological Report (FPR) was assessed. …

Antibiotics (Abx) are administered to 20%-30% of pregnant women, but their effects on neonatal immune development are poorly understood. We show that newborn mice born to Abx-treated dams are more susceptible to late-onset sepsis. This susceptibility is linked to lower maternal breast milk immunoglobulin A (IgA), neonatal fecal IgA, and IgA coating of intestinal bacteria, thus causing the translocation of intestinal pathobionts. Weaned young adults born to Abx-treated mothers had reduced IgA+ plasma cells in the ileum and colon, fecal secretory IgA (SIgA), colonic CD4+ T regulatory lymphocytes

Late-onset sepsis (LOS) is commonly seen in neonates who are hospitalized for extended periods, particularly in very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) and extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWI). Currently, the management of LOS in preterm infants faces dual challenges of delayed diagnosis and treatment, as well as antibiotic overtreatment. To address these issues, the Hunan Neonatal Medical Quality Control Center and the Neonatology Group of Perinatal Medical Committee of Hunan Medical Association organized a group of neonatal experts from Hunan Province to formulate recommendations based o
