BACKGROUND: Renal transplantation is the most common organ transplantation procedure in Indonesia. Renal transplant recipients (RTRs) were found to carry 3-to-5-time higher risk of cancer compared to the normal population. Around 40% of cancers in RTR patients were non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective treatment for certain non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), including superficial and nodular basal cell carcinomas (sBCC and nBCC), actinic keratosis (AK) and Bowen's disease. Methyl aminolevulinate (MAL, Metvix) is licensed in Europe for use in PDT for sBCC, nBCC and thin or non-hyperkeratotic and non-pigmented AK on the face and scalp, where other therapies are unsuitable. Optimal PDT response can be achieved through appropriate patient selection and lesion preparation. Evidence of efficacy is reviewed from guidelines and clinical experience.

As for all cancers successful treatment of carcinoma of the lip depends on early detection and treatment. This article describes the different types of carcinoma of the lip with notes on their aetiology, diagnosis, natural histories, treatment and prevention. The observation is made that maxillofacial surgeons are well placed to make an early diagnosis which leads to decreased morbidity and mortality.

Intraepithelial epithelioma (IEE) is a distinct histologic expression of a variety of epithelial processes. The most common intraepidermal tumors giving rise to this histologic pattern are seborrheic keratosis and actinic keratosis, although several others were seen in our series.
