Three-dimensional evaluation of condylar position after mandibular reconstruction with a fibula free flap-comparison of different surgical techniques.

Three-dimensional positional changes of the temporomandibular joint after mandible reconstruction using microvascular fibula flaps were investigated in 58 patients. The results of preoperative virtually planned surgery, intraoperative resection- and cutting-guided surgery, and non-guided surgery were compared. Pre- and postoperative computed tomography data of each patient were processed and superimposed digitally. The condyle deviations and rotations along the axes and planes of the skull, as well as Euclidean distances, were determined. Reliability analyses, descriptive statistics, and non-p

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma: unusual sites and unusual morphology.

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma is a soft tissue neoplasm of low malignant potential, typically occurring in the superficial soft tissues of the extremities in children and young adults. Occurrence outside somatic soft tissues is most uncommon. This report describes eight such cases, involving the lung (three cases), mediastinum (one case), vulva (two cases), retroperitoneum (one case) and ovary (one case), with the latter three locations being hitherto unreported sites of occurrence. Patients had a median age of 48 years, and presented with symptoms related to the mass lesion (five cases) or

Characterization of the expression of cellular retrovirus genes and oncogenes in feline cells.

Expression of endogenous retrovirus genes and two different cellular oncogenes (c-onc genes) was examined at the transcriptional level in a variety of normal and lymphoma/leukemia tissues of the domestic cat. The two oncogenes, c-myb(related to avian myeloblastosis virus) and c-myc(related to avian myelocytomatosis virus) were selected for their association with the induction of hematopoietic malignancies, when present in the transforming retroviruses. Tissue-specific expression of endogenous feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-related genes was detected in cellular subpopulations of the cat placenta

In vivo and In vitro properties evaluation of curcumin loaded MgO doped 3D printed TCP scaffolds.

The lack of site-specific chemotherapeutic agents to treat bone malignancy throws a significant challenge in the design of a delivery vehicle. The major scientific question posed in this study is, can we utilize curcumin-loaded magnesium oxide (MgO) doped 3D printed tricalcium phosphate (TCP) bone grafts as a localized delivery system that improves early stage in vivo osseointegration and in vitro chemoprevention, antibacterial properties? We have utilized curcumin as an alternative natural chemopreventive agent for bone cancer-specific delivery after direct incorporation on the 3D printed tri

A Rare Pediatric Giant Cell Tumor of the Clivus Bone, H3.3 p.Gly35Trp-mutated: Case Report and Mini-review of the Literature.

Introduction: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a rare, typically benign neoplasm that primarily affects long bones in adults, with clival involvement being extremely rare, particularly in pediatric cases: a mini-review shows a total of 28 described cases, of which only 5 were truly pediatric (within 14 years of age). Surgery is the treatment of choice, and Denosumab is reported to be the most effective drug therapy. To date, the GCTB's molecular hallmark is the somatic mutation p.Gly34Trp, at the H3F3A gene (H3.3 p.Gly34Trp mutation), but in this case, the mutation H3.3 p.Gly35Trp was identi

Case report: The first case of concurrent breast myeloid sarcoma and borderline phyllodes tumor with malignant features.

BACKGROUND: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare hematological malignancy characterized by the formation of a solid mass of myeloblasts outside the bone marrow, such as in the lymph nodes, skin, or bone. MS may arise de novo or concurrently with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). MS accounts for less than 1% of extramedullary acute myeloid leukemia cases. Phyllodes tumors (PTs) are a rare fibroepithelial breast tumor that can be benign, malignant, or borderline, and account for less than 1% of all breast cancers. CASE PRESENTATION: We

Steroidogenesis and androgen/estrogen signaling pathways are altered in in vitro matured testicular tissues of prepubertal mice.

The recent discovery of an eosinophilia-specific, imatinib-sensitive, karyotypically occult but fluorescence in situ hybridization-apparent molecular lesion in a subset of patients with blood eosinophilia has transformed the diagnostic as well as treatment approach to eosinophilic disorders. Primary (i.e. nonreactive) eosinophilia is considered either "clonal" or "idiopathic" based on the presence or absence, respectively, of either a molecular or bone marrow histological evidence for a myeloid neoplasm. Clonal eosinophilia might accompany a spectrum of clinicopathological entities, the minori

Symptomatic Intraosseous Vascular Malformation of Infraorbital Rim: A Case Report With Literature Survey.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Intraosseous orbital hemangiomas or vascular malformations (VM) are rare. This report is intended to complement the experience of diagnosing and treating a rare vascular lesion at this site. Special attention is paid to three-dimensional imaging and the morphological distinction between the two entities in this location. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old female was examined and surgically treated for an exophytic firm mass of the infraorbital, which had become palpable as a hard mass due to growth in size. At first, a bone tumor, for example, an osteoma, was suspected. Intraoperative

Myeloid sarcoma: clinico-pathologic, phenotypic and cytogenetic analysis of 92 adult patients.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare neoplasm whose knowledge is largely based on case reports and/or technically dated contributions. Ninety-two MSs in adulthood with clinical data available were evaluated both morphologically and immunohistochemically. Seventy-four cases were also studied by fluorescent in situ hybridization on tissue sections and/or conventional karyotyping on bone marrow or peripheral blood. Histologically, 50% of the tumors were of the blastic type, 43.5% either monoblastic or myelomonocytic and 6.5% corresponded to different histotypes. CD68/KP1 was the most commonly expressed

[Unusual metastasis of renal carcinoma].

Renal carcinoma, the third most common urological cancer, induces presence of metastases in 75% of cases. The most affected sites for metastasis are the lungs, the lymphatic system, bones, the liver, adrenal glands and the brain with sometimes a cancer free period of several years prior to evolutionary recurrence of the disease. The aim of this literature review is to report on secondary uncommon renal localizations by underlining their clinical significance, as well as main characteristics, in order to provide guidelines for effective patient diagnosis and therapeutic management.

The glomus tumor resorbed bone and teeth in the mandible: a case report.

BACKGROUND: A glomus tumor is a rare neoplasm usually found in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue of the extremities. It is rare for the glomus tumor to occur on the head and face. Only 26 glomus tumors of the oral region and affected bone have been reported in the English-language literature (Table 1). We report a case of a glomus tumor at the mandible. As a new point, the glomus tumor resorbed a bone and teeth roots when the tumor progressed into the mandible. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 44-year-old Japanese man who complained swelling of the right mandible. Radiographic examination

A case of subperiosteal clavicular chondromyxoid fibroma in a 52-year-old man: emphasis on diagnostic utility of GRM1 immunohistochemistry.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a benign cartilaginous neoplasm that accounts for less than 1% of all primary bone tumors and typically arises in the metaphysis of long bones in young adults. CMF occurring in the clavicle is uncommon, and preoperative diagnosis can be challenging. We report a case of CMF arising in the subperiosteal region of the clavicular diaphysis in a 52-year-old man. Radiologically, a well-defined, subperiosteal lesion with expansile remodeling but without periosteal reaction was identified, showing marked hyperintensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and intens

A Heart of Myeloid: Extramedullary Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia-2 Presenting as a Myeloid Sarcoma of the Pericardium Causing Recurrent Pericardial Effusions.

Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is a rare neoplasm that has a roughly 15-30% chance of transforming into acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Acute leukemias have been known to cause pleural or pericardial effusions but having CMML transform into AML while presenting as a cardiac myeloid sarcoma causing pericardial effusions makes this case unique. A 59-year-old patient presented to the emergency room with shortness of breath and was found to be in cardiac tamponade requiring urgent care. The thoracic surgery team performed a pericardiectomy and placed a window drain. Cardiac tissue biopsy pro

Erdheim-Chester disease as complex clinical presentation and diagnosis: A case report and concise review of literature.

RATIONALE: Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare multisystemic disease characterized by the infiltration of multiple organs by foamy CD68 + CD1a-histiocytes. The genetic background consists of gain-of-function somatic mutations in the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway. The purpose of the present paper is to make a contribution to the scientific literature on ECD by reporting our experience with a complex clinical case report, along with a concise review of the literature. We discussed the unusual clinical presentation, the complex diagnostic process and the comparison with other publi

Primary Ewing's sarcoma of the uterine cervix: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is an aggressive cancer of bone and soft tissue, most of which tend to occur in the bone. Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma (EES) of the cervix is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: In the present work, we reported a 39-year-old cervical EES patient with a 2.5*2.1*1.8 cm tumor mass. According to previous literatures, our case is the smallest tumor found in primary cervical ES ever. The patient initially came to our hospital due to vaginal bleeding, and then the gynecological examination found a neoplasm between the cervical canal and partially in the external cervi

Severe necrotizing stomatitis and osteomyelitis after chemotherapy for acute leukaemia.

BACKGROUND: Leukaemia is a malignant neoplasm characterized by clonal proliferation of white blood cells within the bone marrow. Despite an increase in the white blood cell count, the leukaemic leukocytes are non-functional. The oral complications arising in leukaemic patients can be attributed to the direct and indirect effects of immunosuppressive chemotherapy. METHODS: This case report describes severe maxillary and mandibular necrotizing stomatitis and osteomyelitis in a young female patient after chemotherapy for acute leukaemia. On physical examination, the patient presented malnourishe

Reconstruction of Extended Orbitomaxillectomy and Hemimandibulectomy Defects With Fibula Flaps and Patient-Specific Implants.

An extended orbitomaxillectomy and hemimandibulectomy for polyostotic juvenile ossifying fibroma resection were performed with the assistance of patient-specific cutting guides. The resulting defects were reconstructed in stages. First, a patient-specific mandibular reconstruction plate was fixed to the hemimandibulectomy defect in the same operation as the resection. After margins were proven to be free of tumor on histologic analysis, a free fibula flap contoured to the reconstruction plate was used to reconstruct the mandible. Reconstruction of the maxilla, alveolus, and orbit were performe

[Technical aspects of autologous bone marrow transplantation].

Autologous bone marrow transplantation has become an established procedure in the treatment of malignancies. Especially in patients with hematological malignant diseases, who have no compatible allogeneic bone marrow donor or in patients with solid tumors, in whom the threshold of irreversible bone marrow toxicity is reached by the intensified chemotherapy, this procedure allows the use of a myeloablative therapy. As stem cell sources, bone marrow (BM), peripheral blood-derived stem cells (PBSC), and umbilical cord blood can be used. The risk of contaminating malignant cells in BM or PBSC can
