Metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the lung to the thyroid gland presented as nodular goiter: a rare case report.

UNLABELLED: Metastasis of squamous cell lung carcinoma to the thyroid gland is an extremely rare event. It frequently metastasizes to lymph nodes, liver, adrenal glands, bone, brain, and pleura. Among the lung carcinomas metastasizing to the thyroid, adenocarcinomas are the most common followed by squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old male patient presented with bilateral neck swelling. Fine needle aspiration is performed and was undetermined. Ultrasonography of the neck demonstrated multiple hypoechoic nodules with thyroid enlargement. The patient was diagnosed wi

Ovarian Teratomas Unveiled: Pathologists' Curiosity Reveals Intriguing Associations in the Enigmatic Realm.

Mature and immature teratomas can coexist with other tumor types and they may undergo malignant change in any one of their elements. In the present study, we present our institutional experience of these rare associations with teratomas. This was a retrospective study over a period of 10 years (January 2014 to December 2023) on histopathologically diagnosed cases of ovarian teratomas. The clinicopathologic features of malignant transformation (MT), other associations, as well as co-existing tumors with ovarian teratomas were analyzed. There was a total of 602 (21%) ovarian teratomas out of all

[Incidence of epithelial neoplasms in the head and neck area in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas].

There is an increased risk of malignancy in patients with genetically determined or acquired immunosuppression. The authors report a case of a 70-year-old patient with a lymphoplasmocytic immunocytoma who developed 19 squamous-cell carcinomas (SCC) and nine basal-cell carcinomas (BCC) over a three-year period. This was the reason to review 100 cases of malignant lymphomas for evidence of additional malignancies. Of these patients, 15% had one or more SCC or BCC in the head and neck area. The age range was 59 to 79 years (mean, 71.7 years) and the male:female ratio 11:4. One or more SCC arose i

Age-specific trends in colorectal, appendiceal, and anal tumour incidence by histological subtype in Australia from 1990 to 2020: a population-based time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset bowel cancer incidence (age <50 years) has increased worldwide and is highest in Australia, but how this varies across histology and anatomical site remains unclear. We aimed to investigate appendiceal, proximal colon, distal colon, rectal, and anal cancer incidence trends by age and histology in Australia. METHODS: Cancer incidence rate data were obtained from all Australian cancer registries (1990-2020 period). Birth cohort-specific incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and annual percentage change in rates were estimated using age-period-cohort modelling and joinpoint regres

Keratocystoma: A Distinctive Salivary Gland Neoplasm Characterized by RUNX2 Rearrangements.

Keratocystoma is a rare salivary gland lesion that has been reported primarily in children and young adults. Because of a scarcity of reported cases, very little is known about it, including its molecular underpinnings, biological potential, and histologic spectrum. Purported to be a benign neoplasm, keratocystoma bears a striking histologic resemblance to benign lesions like metaplastic Warthin tumor on one end of the spectrum and squamous cell carcinoma on the other end. This overlap can cause diagnostic confusion, and it raises questions about the boundaries and definition of keratocystoma

Spindle cell neoplasms encountered in dermatologic surgery: a review.

Cutaneous spindle cell tumors share the common feature of appearing as spindle-shaped cells on light microscopy. Their pathogenesis, presentation, and prognosis are highly variable, and numerous techniques for workup and treatment have been reported. We performed an analysis of the available scientific literature in order to codify the clinical, immunohistochemical, and biologic features of these tumors and to provide insight into the most effective practices for their management, with a focus on Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS). In this article, the clinical and histopathological characteristi

Late radiation effects in survivors of head and neck cancer: State of the science.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common neoplasms. Radiotherapy (RT) plays an essential role in the management of such cases. Despite advances in the technique, hyposalivation, xerostomia, dysphagia, trismus, radiation caries, and osteoradionecrosis remain significant late complications of RT. The aim of this narrative review was to summarize and update the main findings related to late side effects of radiotherapy in survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC). Such effects limit the ability to speak, ingest food and medications, and breathe and also exert a negative impac

Intra-abdominal "angiosarcomatosis" report of two cases after pelvic irradiation.

Angiosarcomas account for only 1% to 2% of all soft tissue sarcomas with the most common site of origin being skin and subcutaneous tissue particularly on the face and scalp of elderly patients. These neoplasms rarely arise in the small or large bowel with presentation as diffuse abdominal "angiosarcomatosis." Two patients are reported who were treated with adjuvant pelvic irradiation for gynecologic malignancies (squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix and adenocarcinoma of the endometrium) in whom diffuse abdominal angiosarcoma of intestinal origin developed 7 and 18 years later. Both patients

p16INK4A expression as biomarker for HPV 16-related vulvar neoplasias.

Up-regulation of p16INK4A is associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) in preinvasive and invasive cervical neoplasia. However, its expression in vulvar carcinomas, which have a diverse pathogenesis, has not been extensively studied. One hundred seventy-seven vulvar intraepithelial neoplasms (VIN), squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), and benign squamous epithelia were analyzed for p16 expression. RNA/RNA in situ hybridization was used to detect HPV 16 E6/E7 transcripts in 112. Ninety-five percent of VIN 3 and basaloid or warty SCCs (76/80) and 4% of keratinizing SCC (2/48) were moderate

[The evolution of the treatment of advanced NSCLC.].

The therapeutic scenario of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has dramatically changed in recent years, thanks to the improvement in the knowledge of the biology of NSCLC, the discovery of targetable oncogenic drivers, and the availability of new effective drugs also for non oncogenic addicted patients, defined "wild-type" (WT). NSCLC has been the first epithelial neoplasm treated with a targeted first-line therapy in patients harbouring EGFR activating mutations or ALK rearrangements, and new targeted-based agents directed versus other molecular alterations are current

A review of neuroendocrine neoplasms of the larynx: update on diagnosis and treatment.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the larynx have been divided into those of epithelial or neural origin. The latter consist of paragangliomas while the epithelial origin group can be divided into the typical and atypical carcinoids and small cell neuroendocrine carcinomata, the latter consisting of the oat cell type, the intermediate cell type and the combined cell type. There are now over 500 cases of neuroendocrine neoplasms of the larynx in the literature. The diagnosis is primarily based on light microscopy, and, in some instances, it may be supported by special histochemical studies. It should

Cervical metastasis of gingival carcinoma misdiagnosed as branchiogenic carcinoma, a rare entity - report of a case and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: A cervical cystic mass is associated with a number of pathologies that present with similar symptoms. These conditions are difficult to differentiate using fine-needle aspiration (FNA), ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Another dilemma in the differential diagnosis of cervical cystic masses is due to the controversies associated with the existence of branchiogenic carcinoma (BC). BC is an extremely rare disease that must be differentiated from other conditions presenting with cervical cystic masses, especially cystic metastasis from occ

Review of tracheal neoplasia in dogs and cats (1961-2024).

Tracheal neoplasia is considered infrequent in domestic animals. A detailed summarized description of the demographic trends of the patients and frequent tumor types arising from this anatomical location is missing in the reference literature. To better describe clinical and pathological features, a multi-institutional retrospective analysis and literature review were conducted to collect all the tracheal neoplasms reported in dogs and cats. Forty-two cases from a multi-institutional data search and 123 documented cases from the veterinary literature between 1961 and August 2024 were collected

In vivo diagnosis of skin cancer with a portable Raman spectroscopic device.

In this study, we performed in vivo diagnosis of skin cancer based on implementation of a portable low-cost spectroscopy setup combining analysis of Raman and autofluorescence spectra in the near-infrared region (800-915 nm). We studied 617 cases of skin neoplasms (615 patients, 70 melanomas, 122 basal cell carcinomas, 12 squamous cell carcinomas and 413 benign tumors) in vivo with a portable setup. The studies considered the patients examined by GPs in local clinics and directed to a specialized Oncology Dispensary with suspected skin cancer. Each sample was histologically examined after exci

Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase in nonmelanoma skin cancers.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) represent the most common forms of nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs). Although successful treatment of these neoplasms is based on surgical excision, an increasing number of BCCs relapses and many SCCs display high rates of recurrence and metastasis. Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) is a cytosolic enzyme, which was found to be upregulated in different solid tumours. However, there are no data regarding enzyme expression in NMSCs. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the potential involvement of NNMT in BC

Dermatopathology in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic 5-year analysis of all histopathological diagnoses from the Regional Dermatology Training Centre (RDTC) in Moshi, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Proper diagnosis of skin diseases relies on dermatopathology, the most important diagnostic technique in dermatology. Unfortunately, there are few dermatopathology institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, where little is known about the spectrum of histopathological features observed. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the spectrum of dermatopathological diagnoses made in a sub-Saharan African reference centre of a large, mainly rural area. PATIENTS/METHODS: To retrospectively evaluate all dermatopathological diagnoses made over a period of 5 years at the Regional Dermatology Training Centre

Two Squamomelanocytic Tumors With Dendritic Melanocytes: Thoughts About Origin.

Cutaneous malignant squamomelanocytic tumor (SMT) is a rare neoplasm comprising 2 distinct cell populations of squamous cell carcinoma and a second component of either benign or malignant melanocytes. SMT most often presents as a keratotic papule in areas of chronic sun exposure, typically on the head or neck of middle-aged and elderly-aged, White male patient populations. In recent years, there has been an increase in case reports, including a review article published in 2023, identifying a total of 37 cases published in the literature. There are only 3 reported cases in the literature with s

Pleomorphic Onychomatricoma: A Mimicker of Malignancy.

Pleomorphic onychomatricoma is a rare condition mimicking malignant neoplasms. Given its rarity, the diagnostic and prognostic criteria of this condition are not well established. The aim of this study was to characterize a series of 6 cases of pleomorphic onychomatricoma. In 3 cases the submitting clinical diagnosis was subungual squamous cell carcinoma. For all 6 cases, nail clipping showed typical features of onychomatricoma as a free-edge thickening and pitting of the nail plate with an additional feature of projecting line pattern. Pleomorphic onychomatricoma was diagnosed based on modera

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of metaplastic carcinoma of the breast: report of a case with abundant myxoid ground substance.

Metaplastic carcinoma (MC) is an uncommon neoplasm of the breast. There are several variants of MC depending on the dominant histologic pattern. The components include over infiltrating ductal carcinoma, extensive squamous differentiation and spindle cell proliferation with or without chondroid or asseous heterologous elements. In FNA smears, only 57% of cases show both ductal carcinoma and metaplastic component. Thus, in almost one half of the cases, the diagnosis is not possible by FNA. Often it is difficult to define the epithelial or sarcomatous character of malignant cells. We describe a
