Gap junctions and nerve terminals among stromal cells in human fallopian tube ampullary mucosa.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the ultrastructure and immunohistochemistry of the stromal cells and terminal nerve fibers in human fallopian tube ampullar mucosa to achieve a detailed characterization of this tissue to permit a better assessment of possible functions. Tissues were obtained during surgery or at autopsy from 26 patients. Specimens were studied by the conventional histologic technique, immunohistochemistry (Cx43, synaptophysin, neurofilament proteins, and S-100 protein), and electron microscopy. Gap junction and nerve terminal frequency between stromal cells w

Comparison of Nerve Fiber Density between Patients with Uterine Leiomyoma with and without Pain: a Prospective Clinical Study.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to compare the presence and the amount of nerve fibers in endometrial, myometrial and leiomyoma tissues using protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5) and neurofilament (NF) immunohistochemical staining in uterine leiomyoma patients with and without pain complaint. METHODS: Patients undergoing hysterectomy for uterine leiomyoma were prospectively enrolled in the study. Twenty-five uterine leiomyoma patients without pelvic pain complaint (visual analog scale (VAS) < 5) were assigned to Group 1; 23 uterine leiomyoma patients with pelvic pain complaint (VAS ≥ 5) were assigned to

The first radiographic image of a peripheral nerve disorder? Lipomatous macrodactyly (unrecognized lipomatosis of nerve).

Lipomatosis of nerves (LN) involves benign fibro-fatty infiltration and is often associated with territorial overgrowth of soft tissue and bone; this distinctive disease pattern can be visualized on plain radiographs. We recently discovered a case (presented by Sir Robert Jones in 1898 to the Pathological Society of London) that indirectly represents a historical landmark in the imaging of peripheral nerves. The clinical findings and image, with obvious soft tissue and bone overgrowth, are pathognomonic for LN, making this one of the earliest radiological observations of a peripheral nerve les

Comparison of beneficial effects of undifferentiated cultured bone marrow stromal cells and omental adipose-derived nucleated cell fractions on sciatic nerve regeneration.

Adipose tissue is a good source for isolation of cells with stem-cell-like properties. The effects of undifferentiated cultured bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and omental adipose-derived nucleated cells (OADNCs) on peripheral nerve regeneration were compared in a rat nerve regeneration model. A 10-mm sciatic nerve defect was bridged using a vein graft. In one group, the vein was filled with BMSCs and in the other group with OADNCs. Functional study, morphometric indices, and immunohistochemistry indicated there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between groups in recovery of regenerat

Tumours may be innervated.

It is generally assumed that tumours are not innervated. However, following an accidental observation of a nerve fibre within an adenoma of the ciliary body epithelium of the eye, we have further examined two such tumours. One pigmented and one non-pigmented adenoma of the ciliary body epithelium (APCE and ANCE, respectively) that had been surgically removed from two human eyes were processed for ultrastructural evaluation and systematically screened and analysed for the occurrence of nerve tissue under a transmission electron microscope. The adenomas were composed of epithelial tumour cell st…

Immunohistochemical localization of substance P in the pineal gland of the domestic pig.

An immunohistochemical study of the pig pineal gland was carried out using polyclonal rabbit antiserum raised against substance P (SP). The pineal glands were taken from the newborn, 21-day- and 7-month-old female pigs. Immunoreactive nerve fibers were observed in the pineal gland as well as in the posterior commissure and habenular areas. The bundles of SP-immunoreactive fibers were also seen in the subependymal layer of the pineal tissue. The single SP-immunoreactive nerve fibers and few small bundles of nerve fibers were located with equal density throughout the pineal gland, in the connect

Total thyroidectomy: the technique of capsular dissection.

This paper describes the technique of total thyroidectomy using capsular dissection. Total thyroidectomy is a safe straightforward anatomical procedure in which meticulous dissection can provide protection to the parathyroid glands and to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. This protection is achieved by using capsular dissection, hugging the gland and dividing the tertiary branches (i.e. the third order of division) of the vessels while dissecting the parathyroid glands with their vascular pedicles free from the thyroid surface, with minimal exposure of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and disturbanc

Imaging axon regeneration within synthetic nerve conduits.

While axons within the central nervous system (CNS) do not regenerate following injury, those in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) do, although not in a clinically satisfactory manner as only a small proportion of axons exhibit long-distance regeneration. Moreover, functional recovery is hampered by excessive axonal sprouting and aberrant reinnervation of target tissue. In order to investigate the mechanisms governing the regrowth of axons following injury, previous studies have used lesion paradigms of peripheral nerves in rat or mouse models, and reagents or cells have been administered to

Implantation of neural stem cells embedded in hyaluronic acid and collagen composite conduit promotes regeneration in a rabbit facial nerve injury model.

The implantation of neural stem cells (NSCs) in artificial scaffolds for peripheral nerve injuries draws much attention. NSCs were ex-vivo expanded in hyaluronic acid (HA)-collagen composite with neurotrophin-3, and BrdU-labeled NSCs conduit was implanted onto the ends of the transected facial nerve of rabbits. Electromyography demonstrated a progressive decrease of current threshold and increase of voltage amplitude in de-innervated rabbits after implantation for one, four, eight and 12 weeks compared to readouts derived from animals prior to nerve transection. The most remarkable improvement

Elevated density and plasticity of nerve fibres in anal fissures.

Neural proliferative processes are regarded as a contributing factor in chronic inflammatory diseases and chronic pain. To elucidate whether neural proliferations occur in tissues surrounding chronic anal fissures and in the normal anal canal, the nerve fibre density was examined with the pan-neural marker protein gene product 9.5 (PGP) and the neural proliferative marker growth-associated protein 43 (GAP) by immunohistochemistry. GAP-immunoreactive nerve fibres in the uninflamed anal canal were distributed region specifically. The proportion of GAP-immunoreactive nerves in relation to the PGP

Oculomotor nerve guidance and terminal branching requires interactions with differentiating extraocular muscles.

Muscle function is dependent on innervation by the correct motor nerves. Motor nerves are composed of motor axons which extend through peripheral tissues as a compact bundle, then diverge to create terminal nerve branches to specific muscle targets. As motor nerves approach their targets, they undergo a transition where the fasciculated nerve halts further growth then after a pause, the nerve later initiates branching to muscles. This transition point is potentially an intermediate target or guidepost to present specific cellular and molecular signals for navigation. Here we describe the navig

Anatomy of the cavernous sinus region.

The cavernous region was examined in 20 fetuses, injected with Micropaque, and in 5 adults. The lateral wall of the cavernous region in fetuses was noticed to have four layers. The superficial membrane represents the dural sheath. The second membrane of dense connective tissue involves the trochlear nerve. The third layer, formed by loose connective tissue, involves the oculomotor nerve, and the ophthalmic and maxillary division. The fourth layer, which represents the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus, involves the abducent nerve. The meningohypophyseal trunk can be complete or incomplete. T

Peripheral Nerve Innervation in Bilateral Cleft Hand Syndrome Elucidated by Ultrasound.

Bilateral cleft hand syndrome is a rare congenital malformation with complex anatomy. Previous reports have mainly focused on the description of bone and soft tissue abnormalities, but information about innervation is scarce. Knowledge of the peripheral nerve anatomy is helpful for surgical treatment, optimizing the reconstruction, and preventing iatrogenic damage. Following clinical assessment and conventional radiologic imaging, we used high-resolution ultrasound of both hands and forearms to image the peripheral nerves in a patient with severe bilateral cleft hand syndrome. The patient pres

The Differentiation Stage of Transplanted Stem Cells Modulates Nerve Regeneration.

In regenerative medicine applications, the differentiation stage of implanted stem cells must be optimized to control cell fate and enhance therapeutic efficacy. We investigated the therapeutic potential of human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cells at two differentiation stages on peripheral nerve regeneration. Neural crest stem cells (NCSCs) and Schwann cells (NCSC-SCs) derived from iPSCs were used to construct a tissue-engineered nerve conduit that was applied to bridge injured nerves in a rat sciatic nerve transection model. Upon nerve conduit implantation, the NCSC group sho

Facial nerve reconstruction using a vascularized lateral femoral cutaneous nerve graft based on the superficial circumflex iliac artery system: an application of the inferolateral extension of the groin flap.

The use of an inferolateral extension technique of a groin flap has previously been reported. This technique involves harvesting an extended portion from the anterolateral thigh, including the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) and its accompanying vessels, attached to a groin flap via communications between the LFCN-accompanying vessels and the superficial circumflex iliac artery (SCIA) system. In this study, we used this technique involving a vascularized LFCN combined with a groin flap to reconstruct a facial nerve defect. The patient was a 58-year-old man with a salivary duct carcinoma

Perineural invasion progressing to leptomeningeal carcinomatosis: is the absence of peripheral nerves an important sign?

BACKGROUND: Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LMC) is a rare, frequently fatal complication of cranial nerve invasion by a primary cutaneous carcinoma. OBJECTIVE: Complete absence of nerve tissue was observed in retrospect in a Mohs surgery case that had subsequently proceeded to LMC. We theorized that the cancer invaded the perineural space and spread contiguously until meeting a point of resistance, in this case the mental foramen. Pressure on the nerve resulted in Wallerian degeneration of the peripheral nerve, causing progressive anesthesia and obscuring the presence of perineural invasion (…

Capability of neurite regeneration of retinal explant from adult rat after optic nerve injury.

Axons of the central nervous system in adult mammals do not regenerate spontaneously after axotomy. To understand whether the optic nerve of adult mammals loses the intrinsic capability to regenerate after injury, we have studied the capability of neurite regeneration of retinal explant from adult rat after optic nerve axotomy in vitro. After experimental blunt damage to the optic nerve of adult Wistar rat, the retinal explants from three days, one week, two weeks and three weeks after axotomy were put in tissue culture to observe the neurite growth after four days' incubation. The neurites we

Occult lipomatosis of the nerve as part of macrodystrophia lipomatosa: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Macrodystrophia lipomatosa (MDL) is characterized by progressive overgrowth affecting soft tissues and bony structures and is part of lipomatous overgrowth syndromes. MDL has been associated with lipomatosis of the nerve (LN), an adipose lesion of nerve that has a pathognomonic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance as well as a mutation in the PIK3CA gene. The authors present a case of occult LN in the setting of MDL. OBSERVATIONS: A 2-year-old boy with progressive soft tissue overgrowth of his proximal right lower extremity was initially diagnosed with neurofibromatosis typ
