Devices for the electrical stimulation of the olfactory system: A review.

The loss of olfactory function has a profound impact on quality of life, affecting not only sensory perception but also memory, emotion, and overall well-being. Despite this, advancements in olfactory prostheses have lagged significantly behind those made for vision and hearing restoration. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of the current state of devices for electrical stimulation of the olfactory system. We begin by providing an overview of the olfactory system's structure and function, emphasizing the neural pathways involved in smell perception. Following this, we explore the key

Neural repair function of osteopontin in stroke and stroke‑related diseases (Review).

Stroke, including hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke, is a common disease of the central nervous system. It is characterized by a high mortality and disability rate and is closely associated with atherosclerosis, hypertension hyperglycemia, atrial fibrillation and unhealthy living habits. The continuous development of surgery and medications has decreased the mortality rate of patients with stroke and has greatly improved the disease prognosis. At present, the direction of clinical treatment and research has gradually shifted to the repair of nerve function after stroke. Osteopontin (OPN)

Comparative analysis of different artificial neural networks for predicting and optimizing in vitro seed germination and sterilization of petunia.

The process of optimizing in vitro seed sterilization and germination is a complicated task since this process is influenced by interactions of many factors (e.g., genotype, disinfectants, pH of the media, temperature, light, immersion time). This study investigated the role of various types and concentrations of disinfectants (i.e., NaOCl, Ca(ClO)2, HgCl2, H2O2, NWCN-Fe, MWCNT) as well as immersion time in successful in vitro seed sterilization and germination of petunia. Also, the utility of three artificial neural networks (ANNs) (e.g., multilayer perceptron (MLP), radial basis function (RB

Dominance of Attention Focus and Its Electroencephalogram Activity in Standing Postural Control in Healthy Young Adults.

Attention focus changes performance, and external focus (EF) improves performance compared to internal focus (IF). However, recently, the dominance of attention focus, rather than the effectiveness of unilateral EF, has been examined. Although the positive effects of EF on standing postural control have been reported, the dominance of attention focus has not yet been examined. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the dominance of attention focus and its neural mechanism in standing postural control using electroencephalography (EEG). A standing postural control task under IF and

mm-Wave Radar-Based Vital Signs Monitoring and Arrhythmia Detection Using Machine Learning.

A non-contact, non-invasive monitoring system to measure and estimate the heart and breathing rate of humans using a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) mm-wave radar at 77 GHz is presented. A novel diagnostic system is proposed which extracts heartbeat phase signals from the FMCW radar (reconstructed using Fourier series analysis) to test a three-layer artificial neural network model to predict the presence of arrhythmia in individuals. The effect of person orientation, distance of measurement and movement was analyzed with respect to a reference device based on statistical measures th

Structural Characterization of N-WASP Domain V Using MD Simulations with NMR and SAXS Data.

Because of their large conformational heterogeneity, structural characterization of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) is very challenging using classical experimental methods alone. In this study, we use NMR and small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) data with multiple molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to describe the conformational ensemble of the fully disordered verprolin homology domain of the neural Aldrich syndrome protein involved in the regulation of actin polymerization. First, we studied several back-calculation software of SAXS scattering intensity and optimized the adjustable

Differential expression of cyclins mRNA in neural tissues of BoHV-1- and BoHV-5- infected cattle.

Bovine alphaherpesvirus types 1 (BoHV-1) and 5 (BoHV-5) are closely related alphaherpesviruses. BoHV-5 causes non-suppurative meningoencephalitis in calves. BoHV-1 is associated with several syndromes and, occasionally, can cause encephalitis. Although both viruses are neurotropic and they share similar biological properties, it is unknown why these alphaherpesviruses differ in their ability to cause neurological disease. Neural tissue samples were collected from BoHV-1- and BoHV-5-intranasally inoculated calves during acute infection, latency and reactivation and the levels of cyclins mRNA ex

Oxygen Levels Regulate the Development of Human Cortical Radial Glia Cells.

The oxygen (O2) concentration is a vital parameter for controlling the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of neural stem cells. A prenatal reduction of O2 levels (hypoxia) often leads to cognitive and behavioral defects, attributable to altered neural development. In this study, we analyzed the effects of O2 levels on human cortical progenitors, the radial glia cells (RGCs), during active neurogenesis, corresponding to the second trimester of gestation. Small changes in O2 levels profoundly affected RGC survival, proliferation, and differentiation. Physiological hypoxia (3% O2) promo

Sensory axons excitability changes in carpal tunnel syndrome after neural mobilization.

Increased mechanosensitivity of the median nerve in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) has been demonstrated during upper limb tension test 1 (ULTT1) when the nerve is passively elongated. However, the neurophysiological changes of the sensory axons during stressing activities are unknown. The aim of present study was to verify possible changes in the excitability of median nerve afferent axons following nerve stress in elongation, in subjects with and without CTS. Eight CTS hands and eight controls were selected. Recruitment properties of the median nerve were studied by analyzing the relationship

Calcium sensing receptor absence delays postnatal brain development via direct and indirect mechanisms.

Calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) is implicated in the establishment of neural connections and myelin formation. However, its contribution to brain development remains unclear. We addressed this issue by analyzing brain phenotype in postnatal CaSR null mice, a model of human neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism. One- and 2-week-old CaSR null mice exhibited decreased brain weight and size with a developmental delay in expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen. Neuronal and glial differentiation markers, neuronal specific nuclear protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein, and myelin basic pro

Neural coupling of cooperative hand movements: a reflex and fMRI study.

The neural control of "cooperative" hand movements reflecting "opening a bottle" was explored in human subjects by electromyographic (EMG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) recordings. EMG responses to unilateral nonnoxious ulnar nerve stimulation were analyzed in the forearm muscles of both sides during dynamic movements against a torque applied by the right hand to a device which was compensated for by the left hand. For control, stimuli were applied while task was performed in a static/isometric mode and during bilateral synchronous pro-/supination movements. During the dynam

Epidemiological and histopathological data and E-cadherin-like prognostic factors in early carcinomas of the tongue and floor of mouth.

Despite recent advances in diagnosis and treatment, overall survival of people with squamous cell carcinomas of the tongue and mouth floor continues to be low. Prognostic information is essential for improved evaluation and treatment. A molecular approach is necessary for a better understanding of cancer. We analyzed 50 patients with early squamous cell carcinoma (stages I and II - AJCC, 1997), who were surgically treated in head and neck departments at Heliopolis Hospital and Santa Casa in São Paulo, Brazil. We searched for epidemiological and pathological behaviors that could be involved in

Synaptic inputs and their pathways from fixation and saccade zones of the superior colliculus to inhibitory burst neurons and pause neurons.

The caudal part of the superior colliculus (SC) plays an important role in the generation of saccades, whereas the rostral part of the SC is considered to be involved in visual fixation. The present study was performed to determine neural connections from the rostral and caudal parts of the SC to inhibitory burst neurons (IBNs) and pause neurons (PNs) in the nucleus raphe interpositus in the anesthetized cat, and to reveal the functional role of the rostral SC on eye movements. The intracellular potentials from IBNs and PNs were recorded, and the effects of stimulation of the SC on these neuro

Information flow related to visual search assessed using magnetoencephalography.

The sequence of neural activation during a visual search task was investigated using magnetoencephalography and the source locations for the activations were analyzed using a single-dipole algorithm. Five components (M1-5) were detected at mean latencies of 110, 146, 196, 250 and 333 ms in both of two different stimulus conditions; a target popped out in one stimulus condition (pop-out), while it did not in the other condition (non-pop-out). Statistical analysis showed that the M3 amplitude was larger and the M5 latency was shorter in the pop-out condition than in the non-pop-out condition, wh

Ascorbyl palmitate as a carrier of ascorbate into neural tissues.

We have investigated the hypothesis that a lipid-soluble derivative of ascorbic acid, ascorbyl-6-palmitate (AP), could serve as a carrier of ascorbate into neural tissues. Ascorbate could then exert its physiological effects in the biomembranes that are the target sites of the cellular signaling pathways which are normally hardly accessible to this water-soluble compound. The potential role of AP would require that it penetrates into tissues. The major objective of the study was to determine whether ascorbate could be recovered from cerebral cortex and carotid body tissues, both sensitive to t
