This paper addresses the question of right hemisphere involvement in the visual components of dreaming. The rationale derives from an observed relation between reports of visual agnosia accompanied by dream cessation and the literature on right hemisphere specialization for visuo-spatial processes. All night sleep EEGs were recorded from subjects with partial or complete section of the corpus callosum and anterior commissure. Upon entering a EEG-, EOG- and EMG-defined REM episode, the subjects were awakened and questioned about dream content. All subjects examined in this fashion were able to

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into cerebellar cortex of the paramedian lobule in 12 cats, and the ensuing distribution of labeled cells in the pontine nuclei was mapped in some detail. The cells in the pontine gray which give origin to fibers to the paramedian lobule lie together, in part in groups, and in part in columns. The columns are situated both medial and ventrolateral to the peduncle, as well as in the dorsolateral pontine nucleus. The projection is bilateral with a clearcut contralateral preponderance, except in the lateralmost region in the dorsolateral nucleus, which pr

The neural signals generated by the light-sensitive photoreceptors in the human eye are substantially processed and recoded in the retina before being transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. A key aspect of this recoding is the splitting of the signals within the two major cone-driven visual pathways into distinct ON and OFF branches that transmit information about increases and decreases in the neural signal around its mean level. While this separation is clearly important physiologically, its effect on perception is unclear. We have developed a model of the ON and OFF pathways in early

Nephronophthisis (NPHP), Joubert (JBTS), and Meckel-Gruber (MKS) syndromes are autosomal-recessive ciliopathies presenting with cystic kidneys, retinal degeneration, and cerebellar/neural tube malformation. Whether defects in kidney, retinal, or neural disease primarily involve ciliary, Hedgehog, or cell polarity pathways remains unclear. Using high-confidence proteomics, we identified 850 interactors copurifying with nine NPHP/JBTS/MKS proteins and discovered three connected modules: "NPHP1-4-8" functioning at the apical surface, "NPHP5-6" at centrosomes, and "MKS" linked to Hedgehog signalin

Descending inhibition plays an important role in modulating spinal nociceptive neurotransmission. Barbiturates have been suggested to be poor analgesics or anti-analgesic because they block descending inhibition from supraspinal centers to the spinal cord. Opiate analgesics, on the other hand, are postulated to increase descending inhibition. We tested this hypothesis in an isolated brain stem-spinal cord preparation from neonatal rats, using as the test response a nociceptive-related slow ventral root potential (sVRP) recorded in the lumbar region. Brain stem and spinal cord were separately p

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use disorder (TUD) is recognized as a significant neurobehavioral disorder, associated with alterations in functional network connectivity (FNC) within and between the triple-network and visual-network.
METHODS: We recruited 87 male TUD patients and 45 male healthy control (HC), collecting resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging(rs-fMRI) and smoking-related clinical scales. Group independent component analysis (ICA) combined with a sliding window method and k-means clustering analysis was used to assess static and dynamic time-varying FNC within networks. Spect

Spinal cord injuries can be devastating on quality of life and lost opportunities due to their impact on bladder, bowel and sexual functions. Supra-sacral spinal lesions can cause incontinence by interrupting those pathways, which normally coordinate the bladder, bowel and sphincters. From a scientific perspective, neural control of the pelvic organs is one of the most intriguing in the body, involving both somatic and autonomic pathways participating in an exquisitely fine integration of lumbo-sacral reflexes. This review details the interactions of somatic and autonomic lumbo-sacral pathways

Median nerve conduction has been compared in CTS, with or without diabetes, and diabetic polyneuropathy. Approximately 90% of hands were correctly predicted as CTS or diabetic polyneuropathy by a comparison including the median antidromic sensory nerve conduction velocities in the elbow-to-wrist segment, wrist-to-palm segment, palm-to-finger segment, and the amplitude of the sensory nerve action potential. CTS with diabetes could not be distinguished from CTS without diabetes. The association between proximal and distal nerve conduction velocities was similar in CTS and diabetic polyneuropathy

Multiple DNA repair pathways are involved in the orderly development of neural systems at distinct stages. The homologous recombination (HR) pathway is required to resolve stalled replication forks and critical for the proliferation of progenitor cells during neural development. BCCIP is a BRCA2 and CDKN1A interacting protein implicated in HR and inhibition of DNA replication stress. In this study, we determined the role of BCCIP in neural development using a conditional BCCIP knock-down mouse model. BCCIP deficiency impaired embryonic and postnatal neural development, causing severe ataxia, c

The nervous and immune systems are likely to be interacting in arthritis, with the possible involvement of both neural and non-neural cholinergic transmission. Centrally acting muscarinic agonists, electrical stimulation of the vagus and treatment with nicotinic receptor agonists can all act systemically to reduce inflammation, although the responsible pathways are incompletely understood. While this 'cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway' is widely viewed as a significant pathophysiological mechanism controlling inflammation, the evidence supporting this view is critically reviewed and consid

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that is poorly understood. ASD can influence communication, social interaction, and behavior. Children with ASD often have sensory hypersensitivities, including auditory hypersensitivity (hyperacusis). In adults with hyperacusis who are otherwise neurotypical, the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent reflex is stronger than usual. In children with ASD, the MOC reflex has been measured, but without also assessing hyperacusis. We assessed the MOC reflex in children with ASD by measuring the strength of MOC-induced inhibition of transien

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A variety of painful problems can affect the muscles in the head and face. Both temporomandibular disorders and tension-type headaches are believed to have a significant contribution from the skeletal muscles and have several clinical features in common. It still unclear, however, to what extent these two prevalent disorders are separate entities or have similar pathophysiological background.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is now reasonably good evidence that myofascial temporomandibular disorder patients are more likely to have a tension-type headache problem and vice versa, but t

The anterior forebrain pathway (AFP) of songbirds, a specialized dorsal forebrain-basal ganglia circuit, is crucial for song learning but has a less clear function in adults. We report here that neurons in two nuclei of the AFP, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (LMAN) and Area X, show marked changes in neurophysiological activity before and during singing in adult zebra finches. The presence of modulation before song output suggests that singing-related AFP activity originates, at least in part, in motor control nuclei. Some neurons in LMAN of awake birds also resp

Many reports suggest that the majority of dyslexic children have a measurable disorder of the fast processing pathway of the visual system. This pathway is believed to extend from the retina to the occipital and parietal areas of the brain, and is referred to as the magnocellular (M) or transient pathway. Evidence in support of the magnocellular deficit theory comes from several sources, but is not totally consistent. Histological studies have revealed shrinkage and disorganisation of M cells in the lateral geniculate nucleus of dyslexic subjects. Psychophysical investigations of visual persis

A well-controlled experimental model for analysis of compression-induced functional changes of the porcine cauda equina is presented. The model allows for electrophysiologic investigation of a variety of neurophysiologic changes induced by nerve root deformation. At an acute pressure threshold of 50-75 mm Hg, changes in both afferent and efferent conduction are induced. With higher compression pressure, a differential recovery in afferent and efferent conduction is seen.

The association and commissural fiber systems arising in the olfactory cortical areas caudal to the olfactory peduncle (the piriform cortex, nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract, anterior cortical nucleus of the amygdala, periamygdaloid cortex and entorhinal cortex) have been studied utilizing horseradish peroxidase as both an anterograde and a retrograde axonal tracer. In the piriform cortex two sublaminae within layer II (IIa and IIb) layer III have been found to give rise to distinctly different projections. Retrograde cell labeling experiments indicate that the association fiber projecti

1. All lesions resulted in degeneration of the short intracortical association fibers in cortical layer I and of the short subcortical fibers which extended to the corona radiata before ending in the deeper layers of the overlying neopallium. 2. From all the lesions fibers were traced through the corona radiata to the subcallosal or the so-called superior fronto-occipital association bundle. This bundle had projection fibers to the orbitofrontal cortex. 3. From the lesion in the orbitofrontal neopallium, the orbitofrontal-pyriform connections were established. Such fibers coursed on the dorsal
