A neurophysiological deficit in early visual processing in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations.

Existing 67-channel event-related potentials, obtained during recognition and working memory paradigms with words or faces, were used to examine early visual processing in schizophrenia patients prone to auditory hallucinations (AH, n = 26) or not (NH, n = 49) and healthy controls (HC, n = 46). Current source density (CSD) transforms revealed distinct, strongly left- (words) or right-lateralized (faces; N170) inferior-temporal N1 sinks (150 ms) in each group. N1 was quantified by temporal PCA of peak-adjusted CSDs. For words and faces in both paradigms, N1 was substantially reduced in AH compa

A neurophysiological dissociation between monitoring one's own and others' actions in psychopathy.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathy is a severe personality disorder often leading to violent and disruptive antisocial behavior. Efficient and proper social behavior crucially relies on monitoring of one's own as well as others' actions, but the link between antisocial behavior in psychopathy and action monitoring in a social context has never been investigated. METHODS: Event-related potentials were used to disentangle monitoring of one's own and others' correct and incorrect actions in psychopathic subjects (n = 18) and matched healthy control subjects (n = 18). The error-related negativity (ERN) was

Transcranial magnetic stimulation in Alzheimer's disease: a neurophysiological marker of cortical hyperexcitability.

Recently, neuropathological studies have shown an important motor cortex involvement in Alzheimer's disease (AD), even in its early stages, despite the lack of clinically evident motor deficit. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies have demonstrated that cortical excitability is enhanced in AD patients. This cortical hyperexcitability is believed to be a compensatory mechanism to execute voluntary movements, despite the progressive impairment of associative cortical areas. At present, it is not clear if these motor cortex excitability changes might be the expression of an involvement

[Assessment of the brain functional state in pathological gamblers with a complex of neurophysiological methods].

A diagnosis of pathological gambling met ICD-10 and DSM-IV criteria. Based on the electroencephalographic data, two types of disturbances of electric activity were singled out: (1) abnormalities of amplitude and frequency characteristics of alpha-rhythm and (2) the disturbance of mechanisms of synchronized slow waves generating associated with the alpha-rhythm abnormalities. Despite the fact that patients did not abuse drugs, they had changes similar to those in drug addicts, i.e. the increase of index and power of beta-rhythm, abnormalities of amplitude and frequency characteristics of alpha-

Iron states and cognitive abilities in young adults: neuropsychological and neurophysiological assessment.

Many investigators found that iron deficiency anemia (IDA) had a great influence on cognitive functions in infants and children. However, studies of such topic in adults are few and controversial. We prospectively assessed the possible influence of IDA and iron supplementation (for 3 months) on cognitive function and intelligence of 28 young adults with IDA. We used group of hematological, cognitive, neurophysiological tests for assessment including: mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Wechsler memory scale-revised (WMS-R), Wechsler adult intelligence scale-revised (WAIS-R), event-related po

Anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of intracerebroventricularly administered somatostatin: behavioral and neurophysiological evidence.

Somatostatin (SST) is a cyclic polypeptide that inhibits the release of a variety of regulatory hormones (e.g. growth hormone, insulin, glucagon, thyrotropin). Moreover, SST is widely distributed within the CNS, acting both as a neurotransmitter and as a neuromodulator of other neurotransmitter systems. However, despite its extensive expression in limbic areas, and its co-localization with GABA, a neurotransmitter previously implicated in emotion, the effects of SST on anxiety and depression have not been investigated. By performing intraventricular infusions in rats we demonstrate, for the fi

Neurochemical, morphological, and neurophysiological abnormalities in retinas of Sandhoff and GM1 gangliosidosis mice.

Retinal abnormalities are well documented in patients with ganglioside storage diseases. The total content and distribution of retinal glycosphingolipids was studied for the first time in control mice and in Sandhoff disease (SD) and GM1 gangliosidosis mice. Light and electron microscopy of the SD and the GM1 retinas revealed storage in ganglion cells. Similar to previous findings in rat retina, GD3 was the major ganglioside in mouse retina, while GM2 and GM1 were minor species. Total ganglioside content was 44% and 40% higher in the SD and the GM1 retinas, respectively, than in the control re

Direct neurophysiological evidence for spatial suppression surrounding the focus of attention in vision.

The spatial focus of attention has traditionally been envisioned as a simple spatial gradient of enhanced activity that falls off monotonically with increasing distance. Here, we show with high-density magnetoencephalographic recordings in human observers that the focus of attention is not a simple monotonic gradient but instead contains an excitatory peak surrounded by a narrow inhibitory region. To demonstrate this center-surround profile, we asked subjects to focus attention onto a color pop-out target and then presented probe stimuli at various distances from the target. We observed that t

Neurophysiologic and quantitative sensory testing in the diagnosis of trigeminal neuropathy and neuropathic pain.

This study investigated the utility of neurophysiologic examination and thermal quantitative sensory testing (QST) in the diagnosis of trigeminal neuropathy and neuropathic pain. Fifty-eight patients (14 men), 34 with sensory deficit within the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and 24 within the lingual nerve (LN) distribution, were included. Twenty-six patients (45%) reported neuropathic pain. Patients underwent blink reflex (BR) test and thermal QST; sensory neurography was done to the IAN patients. Results of clinical sensory testing were available from the charts of 48 patients revealing abnor

Neurophysiologic evaluation of early cognitive development in high-risk infants and toddlers.

New knowledge of the perceptual, discriminative, and memory capabilities of very young infants has opened the door to further evaluation of these abilities in infants who have risk factors for cognitive impairments. A neurophysiologic technique that has been very useful in this regard is the recording of event-related potentials (ERPs). The event-related potential (ERP) technique is widely used by cognitive neuroscientists to study cognitive abilities such as discrimination, attention, and memory. This method has many attractive attributes for use in infants and children as it is relatively in

Quality of life, clinical and neurophysiological picture in patients operated on for lumbar stenosis.

BACKGROUND: In lumbar stenosis (LS) patients, clinical, neuroradiological and neurophysiological findings were not related to validated measurements of the outcomes that are more relevant to patients such as functional status and symptoms. METHOD: We have retrospectively studied 30 patients surgically treated for LS. We have evaluated the patients by means of self-administered questionnaires (SF-36), clinical examination, and neuroradiological and neurophysiological measurements and we have registered preoperative and follow-up clinical and neurophysiological findings. Finally we evaluated th

Neurophysiological monitoring for safe surgical tethered cord syndrome release in adults.

BACKGROUND: Release of tethered spinal cord by sectioning of the filum terminale carries a significant risk of injury to the neighboring motor and sensory nerve roots. Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring techniques can help to minimize these adverse neurologic outcomes. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 67 consecutive patients undergoing tethered cord release. We excluded 52 pediatric patients which limited our study to 15 adult patients treated during a four year period, including patients with a thick filum, low lying conus, myelomeningocele, filum tumor, spinal cord

Rett syndrome: a case presenting with atypical seizures. Neurophysiological and clinical aspects.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a specific electroclinical type of epileptic seizure in a patient with Rett syndrome. PATIENT AND METHODS: We present the case of a girl with Rett syndrome and epilepsy, whose seizures followed two differentiated phases, namely (a) a brief hypertonic onset with tonic-axial predominance, followed by (b) a posterior prolonged clinical absence. These two phases were associated, respectively, to a paroxystic desynchronisation or generalised rapid spikes discharges, followed by a critical slow activity. CONCLUSIONS: The epileptic seizures described in this report have not b
