Delirium superimposed on dementia in nursing homes: prevalence, incidence, and prognosis - protocol of a prospective multicenter cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a frequent and serious neuropsychiatric syndrome in older adults. People living with dementia are at particularly high risk of developing delirium. In nursing homes, where dementia prevalence is high, delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD) represents a major clinical challenge and research gap. Aim of the study is to produce reliable data on prevalence and incidence of DSD in nursing homes as well as to investigate risk factors, clinical course, physical activity patterns, and care processes. METHODS: This prospective multicenter cohort study will be conducted between

Validation, Content Validity, and Reliability of the Spanish SE-OAM Questionnaire: Assessing Nursing Self-Efficacy in Oral Anticoagulant Therapy Management.

Background/Objectives: Oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT) has been prescribed for over seventy years to prevent thromboembolic complications associated with various conditions. The emergence of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) has reduced the use of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), but specific clinical scenarios still necessitate VKAs. Nurses play a crucial role in managing OAT, and their self-efficacy is essential for optimal patient outcomes. This study aims to validate and adapt the Nursing Self-Efficacy for Oral Anticoagulant Therapy Management (SE-OAM) questionnaire to Spanish (SE-OA

Critical care nurses' lived experience of compassion fatigue in the intensive care unit: A phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Compassion fatigue is the state of exhaustion that hinders the ability to engage in caring relationships. Nurses dealing with the complexities of the acute clinical environment and recurrent exposure to patient suffering are susceptible to compassion fatigue. When nurses have compassion fatigue, high-quality care is compromised. However, there is scarce literature examining the experiences of compassion fatigue among critical care nurses in the intensive care unit. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of compassion fatigue among nurses in the intensive c

Shared decision making in inflammatory bowel disease: a qualitative study with patients, gastroenterologists, and nurses.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision making (SDM) is a key component of patient-centered care and is increasingly emphasized in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, insights into the implementation of SDM in IBD care and influencing factors remain limited. This study aimed to (1) investigate the implementation of SDM in IBD clinical practice, including the role of the IBD nurse in this process, and (2) identify barriers and facilitators for implementation. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with IBD patients (n = 15), gastroenterologists (n = 11), and IBD nurses

Development of the Physical Restraint Decision-Making Assessment Instrument: A Validation Study.

OBJECTIVES: The use of physical restraints is a common practice in acute-care hospitals. Nonetheless, physical restraints are associated with adverse patient outcomes and ethical dilemmas. Currently, a comprehensive evidence-based instrument that can guide nurses through the complex decision-making process concerning the use of physical restraints is lacking. This study aimed to develop and validate the Physical Restraint Decision-Making Assessment Instrument to support and standardize nurses' decision-making regarding the use of physical restraints in acute-care settings. METHODS: Instrument

Operationalizing Excellence in Psychedelic Care Through Advancing Competencies in Nurses: State-of-the Science Review.

As interest in psychedelic-assisted therapies grows ahead of regulatory standardization, mental health nursing stands at a critical clinical and professional inflection point. This state-of-the-science review examines psychedelic-assisted therapies through a mental health nursing lens and advocates for the formal recognition of psychedelic nursing as a specialty with defined competencies, training pathways, and professional standards. Emerging evidence from neurobiology, empirical data, policy, and patient experience literature was synthesized alongside nursing scope of practice, ethics, and m

"You're already starting from behind" - Nurses' perspectives on trust, mistrust, and structural constraints in informal caregiver interactions: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers play a growing role in clinical care, yet the relational dynamics between nurses and caregivers remain understudied. In healthcare systems shaped by time scarcity, institutional pressures, and identity-based assumptions, trust-building with informal caregivers is a complex and emotionally demanding process for nurses. PURPOSE: This study explores how nurses perceive and navigate trust-building with informal caregivers, particularly in the context of structural constraints and prior caregiver mistrust. METHODS: Seventeen nurses practicing in inpatient and acute

Role of nurse leadership in supporting sustainable healthcare and organisational change: a case study.

Nurse leaders have an important role in supporting the NHS to achieve its 'net zero' ambitions, yet sustainability initiatives are often perceived as challenging to balance with operational pressures, patient safety and infection prevention and control (IPC) requirements. This article presents a nurse-led case study from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, England, describing the replacement of single-use pulp kidney dishes with reusable alternatives using a Sustainable Quality Improvement (SusQI) approach. Implemented in partnership with IPC, procurement and operational teams,
