This randomized double blind community trial was conducted on Ascaris infested children (n = 85) aged 2 to 12 years and was aimed to study the impact of deworming on nutritional status, in an urban slum of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The change of weight gain was significantly higher in children given anthelmintics than those given placebo (0.92 kg vs. 0.54 kg). A multiple linear regression model shows that after controlling sex, deworming and height were positively correlated while age and weight were negatively correlated with weight change.

Nutritional status was assessed in 303 dialysis patients and the results of Asian and non Asian patients was compared. Mid Arm Muscle Circumference (MAMC) was found to be lower [22.7 +/- 2.7 v 24.2 +/- 2.9 (p = 0.008)] and TSF higher [15.9 +/- 7.2 v 13.6 +/- 7.4 (p = 0.078)] in Asians as compared to non Asians. Body Mass Index (BMI), Mid Arm Circumference (MAC) and Serum Albumin were not significantly different in the two groups. Difficulties in assessing and interpreting nutritional status in the Asian dialysis population are discussed and areas for further work are identified.

Ninety-seven cases of pregnant women with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and 133 controls were investigated on their dietary intake and blood vitamin levels in late pregnancy. Nutritional status and food intake of HIV+ and HIV- homosexual men that were free from enteric pathogens were compared. Food intake (7-day weighed record), anthropometry, and D-xylose excretion were measured in 44 patients (9 HIV-, 35 HIV+). We compared iron intake and iron nutritional status of two groups of healthy term infants who received meat-containing baby foods fortified with ferrous sulphate (2 mg Fe/100 g). About 75 babies in each of three valleys were followed up for two years. The valleys had different levels of water supplies and latrine facilities, whereas socio-economic conditions and feeding patterns were similar. Results show that the prevalence of diarrhoea and intestinal helminths reduced as sanitation improved. Two schools in rural Tanzania were surveyed regarding the pupils' nutrition (weight and height), serum immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM, and IgE), autoantibodies, malaria antibodies, hepatitis B antigenemia, and fecal and urinary parasites.
