Cross-individual cancer transmission to children during the gestational and perinatal periods.

Cancer transmission may rarely occur between individuals. Besides through allogenic transplantation, cancer transmission via the hemochorial placenta, which is permissive for cell traffic, has been described in a few reports. Three etiologies of transplacental cancer transmission include (1) maternofetal transmission of maternal cancer cells, (2) transmission of gestational choriocarcinoma to the fetus, and (3) transfer of preleukemic cells from one monozygotic twin to the other. Additionally, we recently reported two pediatric cases of lung tumors in which the lung-only distribution of tumors

Child abuse and neglect: oral and dental signs and the role of the dentist.

Historically, the law, dental and forensic literature has included numerous articles concerning abused children. The orofacial structures are injured frequently in the maltreated child. Injuries of the neck, head, face, and oral cavity represent the most affected areas of the victim's body that routinely sustain physical trauma in child maltreatment cases. This literature review aimed to report the state of art of child abuse from the point of view of the dentist with focus on studies in dental aspects of child abuse and neglect of the last ten years. Considering the time slot, 20 papers were

The contributions of child-mother attachment, maternal parenting stress, and military status to the prediction of child behavior problems.

Studies show that children with a military parent are at heightened risk of the development of behavior problems. However, there is limited work examining how other factors experienced by military families may also influence behavior problems. In the current study, we recruited three types of Canadian families with a preschooler: families with a deployed military member, families with a nondeployed military member, and nonmilitary families. We examined whether the nonmilitary parent's (in all cases the mother) parenting stress and attachment relationship with the child are associated with beha

Anorexia nervosa and depression in a 5-year-old girl: Treatment with focused family play therapy and medication.

OBJECTIVE: The current case presentation examines the treatment and recovery of a 5-year-old girl diagnosed with comorbid anorexia nervosa and major depressive disorder. Researchers have shown that children as young as 3-years-old may be dissatisfied with their bodies and have concerns about their weight. This case presentation of a 5-year-old child demonstrates that the age range defining early onset of eating disorders can span into early childhood, which requires treatment tailored to the developmental level of these young children. METHOD: A new method "focused family play therapy" was ap

Chromosome 18q paracentric inversion in a family with mental retardation and hearing loss.

We report on a mother and child with a paracentric inversion of the long arm of chromosome 18: 46,XX,inv(18)(q21.1q23). The child had findings in common with those seen in 18q- syndrome including: microcephaly, epicanthal folds, midface hypoplasia, and abnormally modeled ears, dermatoglyphic whorls on fingertips, clubfeet, hearing loss, and developmental delay. The mother and several maternal relatives had mild mental retardation and hearing loss. Magnetic resonance imaging of the child's brain showed abnormal myelination. Molecular studies including PCR-based markers for the MBP locus and flu

Childhood history of abuse and child abuse screening.

Although a childhood history of abuse is related to parental child abuse, many parents with a history of abuse are not abusive. To determine the effects of a childhood history of abuse on adult child abuse potential, a modified Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) and the Child Abuse Potential (CAP) Inventory were administered to matched groups of physically abusive mothers with a childhood history of abuse, nonabusive comparison mothers with a childhood history of abuse, and nonabusive comparison mothers without a childhood history of abuse. The modified CTS asked about childhood events and was used

[Disk calcifications in children].

It is not unusual for intervertebral disk calcifications to be detected in pediatric practice, the 150 or so cases reported in the literature probably representing only a small proportion of lesions actually diagnosed. Case reports of 33 children with intervertebral disk calcifications were analyzed. In the majority of these patients (31 of 33) a diagnosis of "idiopathic" calcifications had been made, the cervical localization of the lesions being related to repeated ORL infections and/or trauma. A pre-existing pathologic factor was found in two cases (one child with juvenile rheumatoid arthri

Acute necrotizing encephalopathy associated with lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis: A case report and literature review.

Damage associated with lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (LA-HLH) to the central nervous system (CNS) is not uncommon. However, the combination with brain damage resembling acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) is rarely reported. Herein, we introduce the diagnosis and treatment of a case of ANE associated with LA-HLH in our hospital and review the relevant literature. After treatment, the child was discharged with only dysarthria and decreased sucking ability. The child is now discharged from the hospital for 6 months with regular follow-up. There were no disease recurre

A Very Rare Case of Megalencephalic Leukoencephalopathy With Subcortical Cysts in a Child Born of Non-Consanguineous Marriage in a Non-Predisposed Community.

Megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy (MLC) with subcortical cysts is a very rare white matter disorder characterized predominantly by motor developmental delay and seizures in a child with macrocephaly. Extrapyramidal symptoms, ataxia and mental retardation may also occur. Only a few cases of the disease have been reported worldwide with most of them showing an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. In India, most cases have been reported in Agrawal community. Here, we present an interesting case of MLC in a child born in non-Agrawal community to a non-consanguineous marriage. By reporting

The Nurse-Family Partnership: evidence-based public health in response to child maltreatment.

Too many Canadian children are exposed to child maltreatment-neglect, emotional maltreatment, exposure to intimate partner violence, and physical and sexual abuse. Retrospective data indicates that 32% of Canadian adults have experienced childhood abuse. There is evidence that child maltreatment is associated with a wide array of negative health consequences across the life span. These consequences expand across physical, mental, developmental and social domains to include suicide, substance abuse, anxiety, depression and physical health problems. Experts have asked for coordinated national le

A longitudinal analysis of depressive symptoms among Asian and Pacific Islander mothers at-risk for child maltreatment.

This longitudinal study examined racial differences in depressive symptoms at three time points among Asian, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander (NHOPI) and white mothers at-risk for child maltreatment (n = 616). The proportion of mothers with depressive symptoms ranged from 28 to 35% at all time points. Adjusted analyses revealed that Asian and NHOPI mothers were significantly more likely than white mothers to have depressive symptoms but this disparity was present only among families at mild/moderate risk for child maltreatment. Future research should identify ways to reduce this disparit

Primary locally infiltrative gastrointestinal aspergilloma in a non-neutropaenic child.

A 21-month-old male child presented with malnutrition and painless abdominal masses. The masses were provisionally diagnosed as being abdominal lymphoma. Pre-operative investigations did not establish any other cause. The diagnosis of primary gastrointestinal aspergilloma was obtained only post-operatively by histopathology and tissue culture. Following surgery, the tumour grew rapidly and massively despite intravenous amphotericin-B, in the recommended doses. The tumour caused recurrent intestinal obstruction which necessitated multiple extensive surgical excisions. The patient finally died d

[Ring chromosome 21 as a cause of developmental disorder. A case report from the practice of child psychiatry].

Ring chromosome 21 is a very rare chromosomal abnormality known to cause a great variety of clinical findings. Persons with ring chromosome 21 can be intellectually and phenotypically normal, but this abnormality is found more often in persons with dysmorphic features, malformations and mental retardation. Ring chromosome 21 is also encountered as the only chromosomal abnormality in individuals with Down syndrome. We describe a four year old girl with ring chromosome 21 (karyotype 46,XX/46,XX,-21, +r(21)), who was examined in a department of child psychiatry because of delayed development. The

The cystic renal lesion in tuberous sclerosis.

A characteristic cystic renal lesion is described in three infants with tuberous sclerosis. Large cystic kidneys were present at birth in one child. The other two patients were discovered to have cystic kidneys and hypertension at 3 months of age. Development delay and seizures were ultimately present in two infants; typical cutaneous lesions of tuberous sclerosis developed in only one child. The roentgenographic appearance of the kidneys in the two older children was similar to that of adult-type polycystic kidney disease. Cysts were lined by a distinctive, hyperplastic epithelium in each pat

Rhesus incompatibility and aplastic anemia as the consequence of split chimerism after bone-marrow transplantation for severe combined immunodeficiency.

A patient with severe combined immunodeficiency received three transplants of bone marrow from the HLA-B- and -D-identical mother. The first transplantation led to a severe graft-versus-host reaction followed by immunological reconstitution. A split chimerism was found with engraftment only of the maternal lymphocytes. Five months after the transplantation an autoimmune hemolytic anemia was observed which was due to rhesus incompatibility as well as polyspecific antibodies. At the same time agranulocytosis developed and 9 mth after the first transplantation the child suffered from aplastic ane

Interventions for increasing fruit and vegetable consumption in children aged five years and under.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables in childhood increases the risk of future non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Testing the effects of interventions designed to increase children's consumption of fruit and vegetables, including those focused on specific child-feeding strategies or broader multicomponent interventions targeting the home or childcare environment, is required to assess the potential to reduce this disease burden. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of interventions designed to increase the consumption of fruit, vegeta

Rescrewing the embolized duct occluder using the delivery cable.

We report the successful re-screwing of the embolized duct occluder (DO) in three children for retrieval and to attempt redeployment. The DO was embolized into descending aorta immediately after the deployment in one child and within 24 h after the procedure in two further patients. The DO was re-screwed back by the DO delivery cable, using "sheath in sheath" in all three cases; however, successful retrieval could be done only in two. Repositioning in the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was done using the same device in those two children and surgical removal was needed in third child with peri

Prenatal diagnosis of congenital lipoid adrenal hyperplasia (CLAH) by molecular genetic testing in Korean siblings.

Congenital lipoid adrenal hyperplasia (CLAH) is caused by mutations to the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) gene associated with the inability to synthesize all adrenal and gonadal steroids. Inadequate treatment in an infant with this condition may result in sudden death from an adrenal crisis. We report a case in which CLAH developed in Korean siblings; the second child was prenatally diagnosed because the first child was affected and low maternal serum estriol was detected in a prenatal screening test. To our knowledge, this is the first prenatal diagnosis of the Q258X StAR muta

Anaphylaxis to the 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine: a second explored case by means of immediate-reading skin tests with pneumococcal vaccines.

Anaphylaxis to pneumococcal vaccines is rare. In the only one child with anaphylaxis to a first injection of the 23-valent pneumococcal vaccine that has been explored, skin tests and specific IgE determination diagnosed immediate-type hypersensitivity to pneumococcal antigens. We report the case of a child who tolerated three injections of the 7-valent pneumococcal vaccine, but experienced anaphylaxis to a fourth injection of the 23-valent vaccine. Immediate responses in skin tests diagnosed immediate-type hypersensitivity to the two vaccines. Immunizations with the 7-valent pneumococcal vacci

Brachial plexus birth injury.

Brachial plexus birth injuries occur at a frequency of 1-2 per 1000 births. Many of these injuries spontaneously resolve. Should spontaneous recovery not occur within the first 4-6 months of life, the prognosis for attaining movement and function of the affected appendage is significantly impaired. The child demonstrates a lifelong disfiguring and functional handicap. With advances in technology, diagnosis and microsurgical techniques, surgical exploration of the brachial plexus has been revived. A multidisciplinary approach has provided dynamic results. At present only one institution in the
