AIMS: To evaluate the effect of a 4 mg/day sublingual dose of buprenorphine in the maintenance treatment of opium dependence in comparison with a 1 mg/day dose over an 18-week treatment period. As a secondary objective, the results were determined concurrently for subjects treated with a 2 mg/day dose.

OBJECTIVE: To screen effectual fungicides for field control because of the seriousness of opium poppy mildew and importance of chemical control on plant diseases.
METHOD: Seven fungicides were screened in Lab experiment and field test during 1996-1997.

Homeopathic drugs plumbum 1M and Opium 30 were partially effective in the recovery of delta ALAD activity of the lead (150 mg% lead acetate) intoxicated rats. Plumbum 1M did not exhibit protective effect when dietary lead at high concentrations (> 25 mg% lead acetate) were given concurrently as assessed by blood delta ALAD activity and hemoglobin concentration. However it was partially effective in the recovery of delta ALAD activity and relieving anemia caused by chronic exposure of low doses of lead (below 15 mg% lead acetate).

Opium-poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) latex contains a group of very abundant, laticifer-specific peptides called the major latex proteins (MLPs). Previous epidemiological studies have indicated an association between the ingestion of opium pyrolysates, dietary deficiencies, and a high incidence of oesophageal cancer in subjects in north-east Iran. The induction of sister chromatid exchange (SCE) by opium pipe scrapings (sukhteh, Su) and the pyrolysis products of opium (Op) and of its major alkaloids, morphine (Mo), have been compared with that of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC). Indomethacin inhibits prolactin liberating effects by MET-enkefalin-NH2, a synthetic analogue of MET-enkefalin, both in intact and in ovariectomized, estradiol benzoate treated rats. The introduction of PGE1 increases the intensity of this effect. It is therefore possible to suppose that the PGs are involved as intermediaries of the prolactin relasing effect induced by MET-ENH-NH2.
