Evaluation of the role of respiratory viruses in acute myringitis in children less than two years of age.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of acute myringitis remains controversial although it is usually encountered in connection with acute otitis media (AOM). In most cases of acute myringitis a bacterial pathogen has been detected in the middle ear fluid, but the role of respiratory viruses has remained unclear. Our objective was to investigate the etiologic role of viruses in the pathogenesis of acute bullous and hemorrhagic myringitis in children <2 years of age. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal cohort study of 2028 children ages 7 to 24 months in primary care in the Finnish Otitis Media Vaccine Tr

Evaluation of cochlear function in normal-hearing young adults exposed to MP3 player noise by analyzing transient evoked otoacoustic emissions and distortion products.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to recreational noise may cause injuries to the inner ear, and transient evoked (TEOAEs) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) may identify these cochlear alterations. The goal of this study was to evaluate TEOAEs and DPOAEs as a method to diagnose early cochlear alterations in young adults exposed to MP3 player noise. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a prospective study of the cochlear function in normal-hearing MP3 player users by analyzing TEOAE and DPOAE incidence, amplitude, and spectral content. We gathered a sample of 40 ears from patients between

Can low frequency sound stimulation during posturography help diagnosing possible perilymphatic fistula in patients with sensorineural hearing loss and/or vertigo?

Perilymphatic fistula (PLF) is often difficult to diagnose because of the similar symptomatology, such as vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss, which is found in several inner ear diseases. We attempted to correlate a positive result of low frequency sound (LFS) stimulation tests in posturography with the presence or absence of a PLF confirmed by transtympanic endoscopy in 209 patients with various inner ear diseases (Meniere's disease ( n=128), vestibulopathy ( n=41), cochleopathy ( n=28) and sudden deafness ( n=12). LFS provoked unsteadiness in posturography without PLF in 24 patients with Men

Echinococcosis presenting as an otogenic brain abscess: an unusual lesion of the middle ear cleft and temporal lobe.

This paper presents a case of a 28-year-old male with a seizure episode and a 4-year history of intermittent tinnitus on the left ear. On computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, a density with rim enhancement was found at the temporal lobe, associated with mastoid tegmen destruction and middle ear mass, indicating cholesteatoma with complicating brain abscess. Evacuation of the brain abscess was performed with a combined otolaryngologic and neurosurgical procedures (canal wall-down mastoidectomy and temporal craniotomy). The pathology turned out to be infestation with Echinococcus
