BACKGROUND: Tension bands structures are widely used to treat transverse patellar fractures. However, many implants-related complications have been reported. The purpose of this study is to evaluate effects and compare complications of three methods used to treat transverse patellar fractures, including titanium cable tension bands, compression screws with titanium cable cerclage, and X-shaped plating technique.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a modification of the cranial closing wedge ostectomy (CCWO) technique and to compare its efficacy to the standard technique on cadaveric specimens.
METHODS: The standard and modified CCWO technique were applied to eight pairs of cadaveric tibiae. Twenty cases of patellectomy for fracture and 14 cases of patellectomy for chondromalacia evaluated for postoperative strength, endurance, pain and functional complaints, revealed satisfactory results in 85% of the fracture group and 79% of the chondromalacia group. Some quadriceps weakness was usually present, but quadriceps strengthening overcame the loss of mechanical efficiency caused by patellectomy. A vigorous rehabilitation program should be followed for at least one year after surgery to secure the fullest recovery of function.

Today, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one the most commonly performed surgeries worldwide. The purpose of this article is to review the appearance of normal post-TKA roentgenographs and describe the correct sequence for their interpretation. It is unwise to depend solely on patients' symptoms when diagnosing TKA complications because serial radiographs can foresee failures well before they manifest clinically. Ideal post-TKA radiographs comprise whole lower extremity anteroposterior and lateral views taken under weight bearing conditions along with a skyline view of the patellofemoral joint.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of open patellar fractures and to compare their results with a matched group of patients with closed patellar injuries. Sixteen patients with open patellar fractures were followed up at a mean of 45 months (15-100). Functional outcome was evaluated using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and Knee and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS).
